Psystar Offers Free Leopard Restore Disc
Posted by Jason Chen at 6:00 AM on August 13, 2008
Psystar, the company that's fighting back against being smacked down by Apple, has just decided to ship Leopard restore discs free of charge to their customers. If you remember, one of the (many) major problems with Psystar's machines was that you had to ship your box back to them if anything went wrong because their "hackintosh" approach to putting OS X on whiteboxes wouldn't allow you using a regular Leopard disc. Is this going to help or hurt their case against Apple? We're thinking hurt, because now they're shipping a modified copy of Leopard, but our only knowledge of lawyering comes from Phoenix Wright 1-4. [Psystar]

@s017jrs: I'm not 100% sure but I believe the corporate purchases are commissioned. Not regular purchases. They do however track the purchase of who helped you to later figure out whether you deserve a raise or a promotion.

Legally it may not be their best move, but it might be the best move for the customers. If they're forced to shut down, it's not like they could service a customer's computer. At least now people who have these machines can do something if they get stuck at the grey screen.

That may not be their best move...
hey, does anybody know if the apple store sales dweebs are comissioned or just work for a straight hourly wage? I need to make a fairly significant purchase, if they're comissioned I'll go to the store. If not I'm just ordering online.

Sounds like they are planning to challenge the whole premise of the EULA. I am not saying they are going to win, but that is the only direction they could go with this.
If they pay for the software, do they have the right to do what they want to it? Good question... depending on the judge (or the judge's bartender), we may be surprised.

PsyStar is apparently run by dumbasses without legal counsel, and they are stone-cold f*cked. Injunctions freezing their business dealings are likely coming soon.

Um, yeah anyone saying they're not breaking any laws are out of their mind. Let's see if a computer company can dole out unlicensed copies of Windows, free or not.

Pystar bought leopard licenses, forced them onto compliant hardware, and sold it.
sounds okay to me.
they never represented themselves as being an apple computer supplier, what stops them from declaring bankruptcy, dumping the shell company, working from home, and the inside back cover of apple magazines?
so, if I get a linux variant running on an apple machine, does that mean i'm gonna get sued? oh wait, what?

The Fanboys march !
I even read a few comments from mac fanboys who said they wouldn't run osx86 because they would be breaking the law ! LOL violating a EULA is not breaking the law, selling a circumvented EULA disc of software IS illegal, I for one hope Psystar have a good lawyer and can force Apple out of their closed market approach.
Why does this offend mac fanboys so much ? You mactards will still pay full price for macs, its just us technically aware people who will be able to build better performing home made models.
If Apple fans really hate M$ they should realise an open version of OSX for all PCs is the only way to bury them.
Support issues are not a problem as if anyone cared to investigate, OEM copies of Windows are supported by the OEM (ie. Dell, HP etc.) So Apple wouldn't need to worry, hardware manufacturers have to right drivers for their own hardware too.
Please Steve let us do it ! You fevered fanboys will still line your hardware business, and the rest of us will buy your software.

Did anyone actually look at the form? Along with getting the DVD, you're acknowledging you aren't going to bitch about the product ("I state that I am satisfied with my product"), you can't return it ("my 7-day return period is over"), you want your restore media ("I would like any restore media related to my product delivered to me immediately"), and that do not intend to dispute the purchase of my Open Computing product".
They're just trying to get their way out legally.
And WTF is with the line breaks in my post? They won't go away.
