PSP 3000 To Have Worse Battery Life, But Sony Takes Note
Posted by Mark Wilson at 12:40 AM on August 30, 2008
The PSP 3000 will have a brighter LCD with a wider colour gamut and 5 times the contrast ratio of the PSP 2000. From the shots we've seen, it blows the old screen away—and that screen was already pretty decent. There is, of course, a catch. And that catch is that the PSP will lose somewhere between 20 and 30 minutes of battery life compared to the old PSP, putting its playtime to 3 1/2 to 4 hours. But to compensate, Sony will be rereleasing the just-discontinued PSP extended battery to the market which should still provide 8-10 hours of play. [Gamespot via Maxconsole]

The PSP's screen was already much better than the competition's but the battery wasn't. Yet Sony comes along and focuses on the wrong thing.

I admit it has some appeal to it. I still own the first gen one and honestly still don't see a reason to upgrade though. Everybody you ask can tell you some great changes to make the PSP loads better than it is now. Ex. Dual analog sticks, internal memory.

I think the real reason they are putting the battery back out is because I just purchased one for my 2000 from one of the last places that had them in stock, simply because it might be useful in the future.
Bastards, all of them.

The thing I want to know is, is the worse battery life on the brighter settings? If both models were set to the same brightness, would they have equal battery life?

And yet again Sony is right off mark. You either buy the unit and have worse battery life than the others, or you buy the unit plus an extra battery pack and have decent battery life. Methinks that the mobile gaming devision is either full of a bunch of greedy bastards or a bunch of morons who don't get what a portable gaming device is supposed to be like. And, of course, those are best case scenario figures, so realistically it is probably going to be a bit less.

I get close to 6 hours of battery life with the PSP-1000 model. This new model does looks good, but not sure if I want to compromise battery life. If the extended battery sticks out, that takes away from the thin size of the PSP-3000.
Still, better screen, mic and slimmer is a nice change for us PSP-1000 owners. I may actually upgrade. Hell, I've had my original model for over 3 years now.

I'll sticky with my fatty. I'm playing Tales of the world: radiant mythology...I can't wait to beat it so I can sell it. Terrible game.

Maybe they could rerelease the battery thinner?
I mean, it's worth the loss of Pandorability if it could be thinner.

I still have my launch-day PSP fat and quiet enjoy 1.50 homebrew. I might have to pass on this one, as sexy as it is.

I wish they would've just made the display reflective so that it's visible in direct sunlight (i.e. the original GameBoy Advance & 1st gen GBA SP)!
If that were the case, I'm sure Sony would've been able to figure out how to make the sidelights just as bright as the backlights in the PSP 1000 and 2000....

I am getting one of these bad boys as soon as they come out. There is so much I can do with a PSP (I also have a DS) that I carry it around and watch videos from my PS when I am in a hotel.

I don't think people's complain on the previous PSPs was "shucks, I wish it had a better screen." I wonder why no touchscreen was added to it which would make it a nice GPS thingy (and on-screen typing would be easier than the current keyboard-navigating-by-arrows-method). It would also be easier to play SOCOM with great accuracy by just tapping on the baddies head. An HDMI-out would have been cool too :)
