PSP 3000 Photos Emerge: New Bright Screen is New, Bright
Posted by Kit Eaton at 7:33 PM on August 22, 2008
The updated PSP 3000 didn't seem all that jaw-dropping, save for talk of its dramatically improved screen: But now pics of the screen in action have surfaced, and boy oh boy, it's dramatically improved alright. Check out that contrast in the pic, comparing it to the PSP Lite: Game playing in brightly-lit situations looks like it won't be a problem with the new machine. In other pics you can see the redesign has other minor changes, like a slightly more curved profile at the edges near the control pads... whether this makes for more comfortable handling will have to wait for a hands-on review. @Samifumi: That is nowhere near absolute. iPod, PSP, all sorts of stuff have multiple colours at launch.

Gadgetry 101: When a device begins to be released in a variety of different colors, it's life cycle is complete. Expect a refresh or an entirely new device shortly.

@daftrok: Carry 'em in a basket like the regular folks do.
You'll save on laundry expenses as well.

I just hope they succeeded in making this one 100% totally hack proof, because those meddling kids were having too much fun.

Still no sign of a bottom-mounted USB port, nor a docking port. Is it that big of a deal for Sony to not let us dock the PSP to sync and charge it? I want a cradle, damnit.

@strider_mt2k: The hacking was a blessing for the PSP. First of all, it became a device where i could carry hundreds of SNES, MAME, Nintendo, and Genesis games with me at all times, a few of MY PSP games in CSO format, and a PSOne game or two, all on a 4 gig stick.
Not to mention i could turn it into a TV remote, stream some movies from my network NAS, play online radio (thanks sony), and some homebrew games, which some are really well made.
The ISO loading is really what killed sonys allowance for it. But this should have instructed them that UMDs are not the distribution system sony should be using for its games. After 3 years, they still didnt figure that out. Had games been available online for download at reduced prices, I think both worlds could have lived in harmony, assuming the online ISOs were not hacked.

@diabolusunknownTheSecond: I'm assuming you own legitimate copies of those hundreds of SNES, MAME, Nintendo, and Genesis games, yes?

@diabolusunknownTheSecond:
I was kidding around.
The PSP being opened up is/was it's defining attribute for me.
Vanilla it's...well...kinda vanilla. ;)

Um, how exactly is the bottom one brighter than the top?
It actually appears that the top one is 25% brighter.
Here's an image which I adjusted in photoshop using the legacy brightness control to make the two bright areas on the right side of the screen (middle strawberry highlight, and cyan background) match those in the the image on the PSP above.
As you can see, the apparent difference in contrast is much less when the brightness of the two screens are equal. Also much of the lack of contrast on the top screen can be attributed to the glare on it.
You will also notice that the image in the top PSP seems to be much sharper. Look at the strawberry pits. They're much more defined on the first PSP, even in the original photo.
The color reproduction of the second one seems to be better though.

@pagercam: Yeah I notice that too... I think the "side-by-side" picture (more like top-and-bottom) is skewed because the photographer positioned the camera at an angle that maximized the glare on the old unit. I hope it was just a happy coincident... I would hate to think he did it just to make the new one look better then it really is. Just look at the face-plate... even the black plastic around the directional pad has a lot more reflection on the old unit than the new one, supporting my theory. I am sure the new screen is better, just not as much as this photo was suggesting.

I'll still take my launch-day PSP over this. Easy hacking.

@pagercam: Obviously. They put out a BS pic to show their point. The top one has glare since it was taken at an angle relative to the camera. Besides who knows what settings they used on each of of those.

Oh, one more thing, what I can't believe is that they continue to put the power switch right where your fingers are sliding around when playing games. The idiot who thought of that should be shot like the way they shoot criminals in China.

People, that's exactly the point isn't it? Sony has learned a thing or two from their Bravia LCD TVs. Unlike their rivals Samsung with their glossy screens Sony might be migrating their matt screens down to their new PSPs so that it shows LESS glare and thereby IMPROVING contrast. That would explain why there's MORE glare on the old model vs. the new in teh pics above. It's akin to some cheap parlor trick. They might not have changed the LCD at all but merely swapped for a less glossy screen cover and perhaps a brighter backlighting. Now hand over the $170 please!

Bad comparison photos. Should have set them up individually and photographed them from precisely the same angle to avoid the obvious glare issues. And should have confirmed that all display settings are identical. Still have the Phat and using it regularly (but mostly for locationfree tv viewing).

Well, this explains why they've got all of these bundles, such as the God of War bundle (mine) and the blue Madden bundle, they're dumping all of the old 2000 series PSPs, so people will see the difference, and re-buy the old system as its third incarnation. I don't even know why they bother. It's been 4 years since the release of the original PSP, let's just drop the improvements and bring out the PSP2!

The point of the new screen is that it's anti-glare.

@Makkuro: @Minimum91: @pagercam: @Elliuotatar: If you guys had read the prior post on this [gizmodo.com] , you wouldn't be having this discussion. Aside from an improved screen (brighter, better contrast, less ghosting, more colors), there's also a better anti-glare coating. Maybe the angle of the photo skews things, but that shot wasn't taken by Sony marketing so who exactly do you think is trying to fool you?

@Noobs-R-Us: word on the power switch, ... does anyone else feel like the psp has the power to give you 10 years worth of arthritis in like 10 months? It's a wierd kinda of hand cramp that it gives you, not like normal controllers.

@pagercam: I think it's made of a different, less reflective, or less glossy material.
Judging by the placement of the light reflections on both models, it seems as if the light was placed directly above and between the two.

Look at the reflection of the fluroescent tubes on the border of the screen. It's just as bright in each case. So, yes, each PSP is receiving the same amount of glare, and the new one is reflecting less.
