PSP 3000 Might Feature DualShock 3 Support
Posted by Sean Fallon at 6:50 AM on August 29, 2008
A Best Buy tipster informed MaxConsole that the upcoming PSP 3000 will feature support for the PS3s DualShock 3 controller. The tipster also noted that it will use 480i composite cables to play games on the TV instead of component 480p. Obviously, this is just a rumour—but it is definitely one I want to believe. @ichi1: I doubt the Dualshock will actually clip on to the PSP. It'll probably connect thru Bluetooth while playing PSP games on your TV.

Sounds a bit fishy as the dualshock would disrupt the UMD drive , making it skip.

If they'd call it the MST 3000 I'd buy another.

So they improved it screenwise and MIGHT add a Dual Shock 3, but are downgrading the video out? It'd be nice if one of the improvements was a video output that filled the screen with the whole game. I thought you could buy either component or composite cables for the PSP slim, but the composite wouldn't work for one of the two major functions: movies or games.
I just finished ripping apart my brother's old PSP battery to make a Pandora so I like seeing a new virgin PSP.

Why didn't they just put full Dualshock 3 functionality into this version? Maybe in PSP2? Actually, now that I think about it, It'd be nice to be able to use my PSP as another PS3 controller... Maybe then we'd be able to play more (all) PS3 games via remote play? I only really see users who don't own a PS3 getting any, if much use out of this, I mean why do it? Unless you really need to play some PSP game on your TV that's have yet to be released on to the PS store, and HAVE to play them using a Dualshock...

First I think, why would I want to use a controller with a psp?
Then I think about the kid in his room with his 19" regular TV.
This is a pretty good idea but I plan to stick to the ps3 at home and keep the psp for the train and my desk at work.

@Sockatume: That's kind of what I was wondering... I knew there wasn't anything too particularly new about that.

The 480i thing is bunk. The "tipster" read Sony's widely-reported, publicly-available specs for the new machine - which states that both 480i and 480p modes will be available for playing games on TV, compared to just 480p on previous models - and made a fool of himself.

Still have my old trusty 1001. It works! Video output might be nice, but not nice enough to spend $200 on. I can imagine that the 3000 will have some new protection against custom firmwares. Probably the pandoras battery won't work with it. I don't think the 3000 now is worth the upgrade. I've gone through too much with my current PSP to give it up. I've been in the PSP hacking scene with it when we still had to use firmware/umd emulators to play backed-up games.

it would be a huge boon for me to be able to not have to hold the thing while I played it when I was at home, but the PSP has never had bluetooth and the dualshock 3 doesn't have wifi. maybe with the usb cable running from the controller to the system?

I already upgraded for a lighter, brighter version, I'm not doing it again. I'm only upgrading if they come out with something that's got more distinct features on it. Plus if I can't use pandora's battery on the new one (which is probably the only reason they are coming out with a new one) then I'm definately sticking to my red slim with m3.71 m334 cfw on it.

Well am I the only one in the world who wants a second joystick? I mean, they want me to use the ^,o,x, and square buttons as a joystick in some games. Screw that.

Let's think about this. The DS3 controller connects via Bluetooth. The PSP doesnt have bluetooth and there are no rumors stating that the 3000 will have bluetooth (that I know of). The DS3 can't connect via cable for control either (it'd be small-to-small and they don't "communicate" that way anyway).
As for the composite only, that's just nonsensical. Why would they take a step BACKWARDS that way?
I'd call your "source" completely full of garbage.

@somesthetic: That would be the obvious solution since they both have USB. I sincerely hope that this gets sploited as fast as possible. A nicer screen, TV out, Dual Shock Support, maybe throw in some faster read times for the MS.... This could be the best way to play your Yarr'd stuff yet.

I would like to use a PS3 controller with the PSP especially when it is hooked to a larger display, my hands are too big for playing any cool action games with PSP's existing controls.

Actually it can, they'd just have to sell a new cable
