Ah yes, just like the ps2 keyboard was a resounding success, I'm sure this sony product will be too, in the same vein as their 2.42 update was.

Once again, Sony fails at ergonomics. At least the 360's Chatpad allows you to just move your thumbs. To use this, you'll have to release the main controller or stretch pretty far.
That said, both are, IMO, useless. The onscreen-keyboard works well enough for the handfull of times I need to enter text.

$50?! The Xbox chatpad is already $30, and that's pushing it.

Wasn't aware the PS3 needed a savior.

Semi-related question: Does the xbox 360 chatpad work on PC yet?
Also, $50? Meh, too expensive.

Why on top? I understand the price (cause it's wireless) but still.... :\.

Plus with the XBOX 360 chatpad you get a headset. Yeah, it's the cheapo, but better than nothing. I don't use mine often, but when I need to type out a name or respond to a message, it's pretty damn handy. $50 is way too damn much for the PS3 chatpad though. I'd use one of the keyboards laying around and plug it up.

I personally think this should have fit on the other side of the controller... so you wont need to the turn the controller upside down to use it...
on a side note - its not as useful to have an average joe 50 bucks on it... and besides... how many times do you need to enter text while playing ps3?
besides that - PS3 did not need a savior...

@spyker3292: it's on top because it's the only place it can plug in to the controller

Yeah, I'd rather just use a wireless keyboard and mouse combo from logitech or something, then if I need to bang out a message I just grab the keyboard from the cubby hole under my table and do so. It's an interesting looking design but yeah, should be on the bottom, not the top.
Also.. yes the PS3, did not need a savior, it already has one and his name is Old Snake... SNAKE, SNAKE, SNAAAAAAAAAAKE!!!! (You're creating a time paradox snake.)

Grabbing my DS3 controller it actually feels awkward to put my thumbs under the sticks like the 360 chat pad, it feels more natural to type above the controller on the DS3

Oh come on, what's with all the hate. You all say Sony 'fails' at ergonomics without thinking it though. Why? Because Microsoft did it underneath? Have you guys even tried holding your Dual-shock controller and imagining how it would sit on top? Well, here's my opinion.
So far, I'm not sure just yet whether putting it on top was a bad design decision. Think about it, instead of using a thumb you could use two fingers which might even be a bit faster. That is, if it's possible to input type while using the left stick to control the game. More importantly, if you would have actually tried imagining it's position on a dual-shock you would know that it's a lot easier for your thumbs (if you really want to use your thumbs) to reach the upper side instead of the bottom side. And the touchpad navigation is a really good idea, I could imagine that being extremely useful. They should even bring that over to other gadgets, imo.
Regarding ergonomics, really? What is more ergonomic, having a keyboard and mouse next to holding a controller or having it all in a single package?

Why not just put the $50 toward a bluetooth keyboard instead? Much easier to type on methinks...

@l3igh3d: You know, that you mention it, I think you're right, it would probably work better on top, since the DS3 is so much smaller than a 360 controller.

SOLD!! I'm tired onthe PS3 onscreen keyboard. It's such a pain to use. This will certainly make things much easier.
Logitech has a good universal one too but it's missing key PS3 buttons.
