Prisma LED Streetlights: Light in Three Directions, Pays For Itself With Advertising
Posted by Sean Fallon at 5:30 AM on August 27, 2008
Thanks to LEDs, the boring old streetlight is getting a fresh look from designers all over the world. Agustin Otegui's "Prisma" concept is among these new designs, and in addition to LEDs and solar power, it features a unique 3-way light system that allows for 30-degree customisation in either direction. That means the lights can be used to highlight billboards, project logos on buildings or simply illuminate a specific area on the ground. In other words, it makes the streetlight more versatile. It is only a concept at this point, but it definitely has potential. [Prisma via The Design Blog]

Oh man, my family should open up an advertising firm. My brother had this idea a couple years ago, and we laughed at him. If I see advertisements printed on the bottoms of drinking glasses, that'll be the last straw.

Is it just me, or have designers gotten way too excited for their own products lately? Is my interaction with street lights really characterized by a lack of interaction and imagination? Oh, that's right, it's a streetlight - it doesn't require the freedom to interact with its environment.

Fantastic, I was wondering how to needlessly add light to the sky.

Yeah, pointing lights up is only useful if your populace is flying/floating.

Methinks that city light pollution problems are going to get a whole lot worse...

@The Sword Master: They laughed at me too when I thought of starting an advertising firm to market pharmaceuticals to gastroenterologists by tattooing targeted ads inside people's esophagus, visible only through endoscopy. It could be the next Google. Actually, we're calling it Guurgle.

360 degree streetlighting is going nowhere, at least in US states that actually review the environmental impacts of projects that incorporate street lights. In those jurisdictions, it is common practice to require street lights to have shielding devices that focus the light toward the ground in order to minimize glare impacts and impacts on protected species who's behaivor is affected by night lighting. This is an example of an interesting design that does not take into account practical realities. In California, those lights have little to no chance of being incorporated into most projects.

can we spend some time trying to figure out a better way to not need ads instead of more ways to stick ads in more places..
seriously.. i'm waiting for the day when i eat lunch at subway and my crap spells "GLAD YOU ENJOYED EATING FRESH... SUBWAY" then my toilet refuses to flush and my bathroom door wont open till i've looked at the poopad for 10 minutes because the door and toilet manufacturer both have ad relationships with subway. Then more importantly my toilet takes a picture of that pooop ad and sends it to my facebook and to my twitter so my friends know that i've eaten at subway, how much i liked it and the fact that i just pooped because obviously.. my friends need to know everything that happens in my life and i LOVE LOOKING AT ADS ALL THE TIME EVERYWHERE.

Yep, astronomers, grab your ankles, here we go again.
Of course, in that position, I don't really know of an eyepiece you could reach... maybe a refractor, on too short of a mount, pointed toward the zenith... Yeah, that's about right.

Well I would hate to live in a world where the average street light DID'NT get an expensive new redesign.
