Preview of Facebook for iPhone 2.0: More Like Real Facebook
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 1:00 PM on August 21, 2008
Facebook has posted a huge preview of the next version of its iPhone app. Due in September, Facebook for iPhone 2.0 will look and feel a lot more like the real Facebook. The News Feed will be exactly the same and profiles will use tabs and the combined Wall/Mini-Feed from the site's latest redesign. Perhaps more importantly, the functionality will be much closer.
You'll be able to search for people outside of your friends, make/approve/ignore friend requests, and search your inbox and sent folder, for starters. Notifications will also arrive in real time while the app is running. The version of iPhone for Facebook after this will deliver them to you even if the app isn't running using Apple's push notification service. Overall, it's pretty excellent, check it out. [Facebook]

It's not the same as a slick well designed all in one app.

so, by "more like the real facebook" you mean no security and plenty of spam comments right?
Dear facebook,

@The_Gas_Man: Get more people to use windows mobile, and they will make it. But theres not much point on them making one for such a small group of people, when the iPhone has a much much much larger one.

@kellygeorge: Either you, or your friends are very dumb. They have very good security imo. Its the people that click those links that say "OMG HAVE YOU SEEN THIS PIC YET? SHES SO HOT" that get screwed. And there isn't much they can do to stop that other then ban peoples accounts that send those messages.

But you can do that on the iPhone too... We Windows Mobile users want a native app like you iPhone users get. The full website sucks on a mobile device.

Finally! A Facebook iPhone app done right! I think they realised, after seeing the MySpace iPhone app, the flaw in trying to design an app that look and behaved too native. The MySpace app looks and feel a lot like the old non-native Facebook web app, which was awesome.

@hiimcliff: what are you on about? I own a Windows Mobile device, and while I think it could do with more RAM, it is certainly not as slow as you've made it out to be. Give credit where it's due, otherwise give constructive criticism.
A Facebook app on WM is necessary, even if it may not work as fast as the iPhone version. WM has a much larger market share, and will continue to do so for a few years.
They could restrict certain data-intensive features such as videos on the Super Wall. That way, people can still make use of the core functionality of Facebook without difficulty.

Where's a WinMo version? Seriously, every WinMo user knows PIE only does the basics, so that really sucks. Opera Mobile isn't free either.
WinMo users probably have a larger need for a better site specific mobile layout, than the iPhone.
So much for the iPhone being a solution for desktop-like browsing on a device.

Iphone still is and will be the biggest joke to ever hit the cell phone industry more power to all you kids that grabbed a hold of that big ol' bandwagon without any research whatsoever people may like gsm for the fact that it is a worldwide network but sorry to say that most of you giz readers all still live at home and barely make it out of the 5 mile radius of your home let alone the country. GSM is glorified analog and will never have the potential of cdma so enjoy your 400 dollar paper weight while i actually make and receive calls with my verizon phone oh ya and don't forget the fact that i still get to receive those ever lovely impromptu PICTURE MESSAGES from my oh so sexy fiance have fun with your wanna be status symbol.

@tex1ntux: Perhaps then the problem is that the iPhone is just more popular (see: 'cooler' to have) so of course they'd make an app for the iPhone. It seems like ever since 2.0/App store came out making apps for it has been the thing to do.

A few people have said WinMo is "too slow and buggy" to handle an app like this. I wanted to point out that in this case slow/buggyness is caused by poor hardware design, not by software. My Treo 800w is very snappy and rarely buggy. I assure you that if there were iPhone OS based phones with half the RAM and a slower CPU than the iPhone they would be slower and buggy, too.

Don't install apps. Problem solved. No one really uses Facebook apps anyway. People just install them, bug you to install it too, then the novelty wears off. I block apps. There's no need for them.
Facebook as a communication platform is all I need. Sending messages, writing quick messages on someone's wall, and sharing photos is what Facebook is all about. These core functions are still there.

How many people buy iPhones? Sheep or not, people are literally lining up for the iPhone. They aren't going nuts for a new WinMo phone.

I don't think everyone should have Vista and/or an 800w, and I don't think they are an idiot if they choose differently than me. What gets me is when people insult me/my choices because I chose differently than them. Can't we all just get along?
