(Presumably) Very Cheap Tablet PCs by NEC
Posted by Mark Wilson at 9:30 AM on August 29, 2008
See this tablet? It's new from NEC and features the same monotonous specs (1.6GHz Atom, 512MB-1GB RAM and 80GB HD) that we see in those cheapie mini-notebooks like the Asus Eee. Running XP or Vista and a loaded with a 12 or 15-inch touchscreen, it's by no means beautiful, but this NEC could be the forbearer of a new netbook-tablet market. We don't have pricing or release details at this time, but we'll keep a lookout, just for you. [Akihabara News]

Capacitive sensing? If it's resistive, then fail.

Its the simple design that makes it look nice.

Hmm, didn't think that NEC did anything cheaply. This could be surprising.

Could probably just attack the bezel with some paint pens or something (little bit o' tape there too). Screen res?

@Miranda Kali (Desperate But Not Serious): Probably wouldn't attack it with paint pens then...

I was "ooooo"ing over this when I saw it on a (forgive me!) non-Gawker, tech site.
According to the translation I got off of NEC's page, it releases Sept. 22nd for about 250k yen.
...or about $2200 smackaroos. (alas)

The big question is what kind of touchscreen element it has. A $500 Wacom Penabled tablet would be candy.

Somehow in my mind: NEC != Cheap;

Would look cool with Etch-A-Sketch knobs.

@Miranda Kali (Desperate But Not Serious): I wouldn't drop 2.2grand for that even if it had a 3ghz processor. No keyboard and that must be super uncomfortable to type on. even if you draw or write the letters it'll be uncomfortable. It'd be good for a car or somethinq and have it hooked up to the car's computers so you could do things like play movies, music, etc.

hope it has a support on the back. complement with a soft roll-up keyboard and i would be set. But ouch!
