PlayStation 3 PlayTV is Non-Transferable After All
Posted by Mark Wilson at 6:54 AM on August 14, 2008
When we heard that PS3 PlayTV DVR recordings would be transferable to PSPs and PCs, we we're absolutely thrilled, proclaiming, "For the first time in a long time, we want to grab Sony and kiss them square on the lips." Well, put away the Binaca, because Sony has taken back their promise for undisclosed reasons.
Now recordings will not be transferable between systems, and HD recording has been nixed for the moment, too (but presumably coming back after launch). So what's left to look forward to with PlayTV? The PS3 combined with the PSP will still allow streaming of PlayTV signals/content. Not bad, but not enough to justify replacing my current DVR, either. [Eurogamer]

Also, if it has QAM and ATSC, it should be able to record cable direct connect with no problems.
That means we'll ALL have to upgrade our HD to 320gb to have enough capacity to record HD.
What exactly is the point of the PSP stream? Who would be willing to keep their megawattage PS3 on all the time just so you can watch TV on a little screen?

Probably issues with networks trying to put drm for their content thinking it is saving them from losing money but in reality it is only hurting them by reducing awareness for shows/content they offer.

Is it ever going to actually come out? (same question for Home)

A kiss? On the lips? Please. Sony's been walking around my apartment naked since MGS4 came out.

Undisclosed reasons?
I have the feeling this is Sony's M.O. Over promise, and pull out features at the last moment. I'm still waiting for a number of my Sony products to turn into what they were supposed to be at the start, with promised updates and patches.

@Noobs-R-Us:
It's coming out Sept. 19th. I doubt it was all Sony's decision to stop the transfer of content. I'm sure content providers wouldn't be too happy with Sony if they allowed easy transfers of SD or HD content to your computer (and thus the internet in their minds). Is it unfortunate? Yes, Was it inevitable? Pretty much.

@Noobs-R-Us:
You clearly aren't aware of the PSP's remote play features. You can power on/off your PS3 from your PSP wirelessly wherever you are (in a WiFi area of course). This is great because it allows you to watch live television anywhere you are, as well as your recorded programs, and even schedule recording from your PSP.

@ludwigk: They would obviously be smart enough to put in U.S. standards when they bring that over to the U.S. market. I know that their new Bravias already have the TV Guide built in where you can pull it directly from the airwaves for free.

@LittleBigPlaneteer: You're correct. I have a PS3 and a PSP but I've never attempted to turn my PS3 on remotely. I didn't know that could be done. I've always had both on before attempting a connection. I'll give it a shot tonight to see if it works...

I think that applies to every single company in existence. Including the darlings of the tech world Apple

@Noobs-R-Us: I thought this was strictly a DVB-T device, with no North America standards supported.

the next question is will the thing be ocap compatable? since all the cable companies are headed that way .... At this point it would allow them to work with cable systems with the new 2 way cable cards... otherwise its a waste anyway

When Sony announced you would be able to transfer the files to your PSP or computer, I though, "Finally, somebody is getting it right. They may be late to the game, but they now have something over Xbox Live." And of course, now it gets pulled, and Sony is back to being a "Hey, look at me!" when it comes to their online gameplan. Bad Sony.

If I cant have control of the media that comes into my house...I wont pay anyone (including the cable companies) for it.
I pay for access...not content. That is the slogan we need to be chanting.
I pay for access. Once.

@SpyderMS: except he wouldn't use the phrase "this is great because...", which shows he favors the brand (at the very least the product). If he disliked it he could have easily left the "this is great" part out.

Seriously though, just because he pointed out overlooked facts? For all you know he could hate Sony, and still make the exact same statements, which would still be just as true...

Sorta OT, but good luck finding Binaca. Ascendia Brands, the maker of the mouth freshener and brands such as Mr. Bubble went bankrupt and shut down in August of this year.

The Media Center Extender function of the 360 is a much more universal solution since the actual recording takes place on your PC and can be controlled and viewed via your 360. This means that all of your recorded content is in a centralized location and can be accessed from any PC or 360 on your network, or via Orb or TVersity when you are away from home.

Why not just make the screen be built with everything that's part of the frame itself, so it's mobile and clutter free; Zen!
