Pizza Oven Leaves You with Few Culinary Choices
Posted by Adam Frucci at 3:45 AM on August 19, 2008
Call me crazy, but I don't really see the point of this Stonebake Pizza Oven. I mean, what's wrong with a regular oven? It can cook pizzas perfectly well, and when you don't want a pizza it can cook many other things as well. Not so with this silly thing, which can make one thing and one thing alone. Want to bake a cake, perhaps a pan of brownies? Too goddamned bad, you shortsighted idiot. You bought an oven designed to only cook pizzas, and now you have to live with that choice. Or...you could just order pizza. All that's required for that is a phone. And I believe (but don't quote me on this) that it can be used to order other things too. Like, Chinese food. Or bears.

My, aren't we cool dismissing a product none us have even seen let alone tested?
"what's wrong with a regular oven?", you ask. It doesn't get anywhere near hot enough to make really good pizza crust, that's what. So most recipes for homemade pizza "adjust" the dough recipe to accommodate the lower temperatures, but it still won't taste anywhere as good. If you think a regular oven "can cook pizzas perfectly well" then, IMO, you are in the same position as somebody who thinks instant coffee is good enough commenting on espresso makers.
*IF* this thing can come closer to authentic pizza at reasonable cost, I'm willing to wait and, oh, call me crazy, see how well it works before passing judgment.

Actually, unless it's a really nice oven that can get really really hot, and you happen to have a quality baking stone and/or a cast iron deep-dish pizza pan, then a regular oven cannot make pizza perfectly well. Hell, it can't make anything even resembling real pizza.
If this pizza machine is all it's cracked up to be, you could also make pitas, naan, and focaccia on it. Looking at those beautifully charred edges on that pizza in the picture, I'm pretty sure this pizza oven would work just fine if it's anything like advertised.
In other words, I totally want this.

It depends. If that is actually a compact, superheating, scorching pizza-stone device that can cook a Neapolitan style thin crust pizza at the required incredibly hot temperatures only reached by fire burning brick ovens that our crappy home ovens could never hope to reach, then its a huge deal.
But its probably just a reconfigured George Foreman grill in a pizza shape :(

I cook pizza maybe 1-3 times a week, and while I'd never pay for this ridiculous thing, it does more than cook pizza; From the linked product page:
If you ever tire of pizza (as if), this idiot-proof appliance comes with a special deep dish for cooking all kinds of delicious snacks: from omelettes and pasties to quiches and croissants. Enormous ovens? Who needs 'em.

Actually, the product page says that if you tire of pizza, it comes with a "special deep-dish insert" to allow you to cook other delicacies, such as....brownies. Now, it won't be a square pan of brownies, but I'm guessing a round pan tastes substantially similar.

Adam, I know living in a one room railroad apartment above a S&M nightclub can be tough, but if you buy an extension cord you can plug in both this handy pizza oven and your George Foreman. It IS possible to get a standard oven up to high enough heat to properly char a crust- check out Jeff Varasano's (he's basically the end-all be-all of homemade pizza chefs) page:
[slice.seriouseats.com]
I'd be interested to find out what kind of stone they're using that holds up to such (apparently) high temps.

By the time you buy all these countertop coocking devices (rotisserie oven, microwave oven, toaster oven, pizza oven, etc...) either you have to move to a new place with a monster countertop area or actually buy a $1200+ oven that can actually cook and save yourself the trouble.

The comments on this product are crazy. It's like why have a kettle when it can only boil water? Could you just put a pan on your hob. Why have a toaster when you can put your bread under the grill? I've not got this one but a similar one that I got from Italy a few years back and it's far far better than a pizza stone in the oven, it takes 4 minutes to cook a pizza at around 450c which isn't as good as have a stone oven like they do in good restaurants but it's the best you're gonna do at home for fifty quid.

Frucci sounds a little angry over it... but I can see how useful that is.
I myself know lots of people who eat pizza almost on a daily basis.
This probably uses less energy and space than conventional ovens.
And I'm guessing that maybe you can use it to make smaller stuff too...
Also: Professional use. Like Expresso machines, would be neat to have something like that in a place that sells pizzas but not only pizzas.

With a pizza oven you don't have to heat up your whole house to cook one pizza. You don't use as much gas, and the pizza oven I got was like $20, it works great and it cooks a pizza in 12 minutes flat.

The pizza ovens in my restaurant can cook a pizza to perfection in about 3 minutes. I'm always disappointed by my results at home- even using a pizza stone and the oven on full blast I cannot get anywhere near the quality of the professional ovens. But they cost a fortune to run and require 450V AC- not exactly domestic friendly!
I doubt this product can get anywhere near the results of a pro oven but if it can outperform my domestic oven then I'd buy it

Pretty much the only way you can get a consumer-grade electric over to hit 800 F is if it has a self-cleaning feature. But then, you risk burning the pizza, as self-cleaning is way too hot, so you'd need to do some modding.

Here's the thing... I live in a one room efficiency that does not HAVE an oven, is too small for an oven, and in fact could not ever have an ACTUAL oven. Therefore, a device such as this (or perhaps the traditional silver pizza oven, because I'm not exactly picky about the source of my pizza - the frozen food section is plenty good enough for me) is perfect for the typical college student and/or recent-yet-still-poor graduate.
True story.
