Phonesaber Removed From App Store, Might Make Triumphant Official Return
Posted by Matt Hickey at 10:40 AM on August 8, 2008
One of the more useless but fun apps on the iTunes app store was Phonesaber, and we say "was" because it's been pulled. This time, though, it wasn't Apple but the makers of the app, The Mac Box, themselves. They were contacted by THQ Wireless, a company with the licence to make all things Star Wars for mobile phones. Thankfully it sounds like THQ and Lucasfilm are being nice about it and it sounds like we can expect a real Star Wars branded version in the near future. We like it when people play nice like this. So what happens now? Didn't Giz post something about Apple being able to remove apps from your device? I currently still have this app on my iPhone. Will keep an eye out to see if it remains there.

Phonesaber is still there as my iTunes Store page is on it right now... I'm updating my friends 1Gen iPhone to the 2.01 software. I just clicked on free apps and there it is...

@Hiphopopotamus: Huh? RTFA. The developer pulled it (Lucas and THQ asked nicely). Nothing to see here... move along...

@KenjiFinster:
I think you hit the nail on the head. I'm betting 9.99 that it's not coming back for free.

Some dude made the same app, iSaber I think it was called. The app got a lot of bad reviews for being a copy cat.

C'mon, put two and two together. Lightsaber + cell phone = Van Goghesque disaster just waiting to happen. They pulled it for obvious safety reasons.

OMG! Ponies!

Although my PhoneSaber is still installed, let me be the first to say that if it gets taken away, there will be plenty of people in Cupertino and at Skywalker Ranch who will get to experience what happens when a light saber gets used as a light enema.
They can pry the PhoneSaber out of my cold, dead, Cheetos covered hands.

It will be re-released as a "special edition," and all copies of the original version will be destroyed by Lucasfilm. The special edition will cost $9.99, and the light saber will have been digitally replaced with a walkie-talkie.

Well, piss. My wife just got her iPhone 3G, and I was going to install this app so that we might do battle... without our phones... and imaginary lightsaber blades.
Ok, I give. I was just going to install it so I could battle myself. You feel the conflict within me, let go of your hate!

I love this app- my kids love it, more importantly- we've had a ton of fun with it. I hope it returns, with or without additional cheesy sound effects.

So rename it LightSword and put it back. Screw Lucasfilm.
