Philips 8mm-Thin 32-inch TV Is Nice But Still a Prototype
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 12:45 AM on August 29, 2008
Philips is working on their own ultra-thin backlighting technology. But compared to the absolutely stunning Sony ZX1 9.9mm-thin TV, the Philips 8mm 32-inch model is a) just too small and b) just a prototype. However, it looks like it uses a similar LED-in-the-corner backlighting technology. [More IFA 2008 Coverage]

This one looks a lot more amazing than the one Sony announced. Its thinner (I believe) and the 'black box' on the back looks like it is a lot smaller than the one on the Sony.
I'm not a big fan of Philips, but this looks awesome.

If you ask me this panel is actually much more amazing then the Sony one. It's only 1.9 mm thinner, but the whole thing is only 8mm thick. The Sony TV is 9.9mm thick at it's thinnest point, other parts are 20mm thick.

Philips always seems to be one step behind. Too bad, they make pretty decent (if not a bit generic) stuff

@phoomp: Ah the good olde days when tv thickness was reported in, not millimeters, but inches.
Or even crazier, feet. I'm looking at you Mr. Rear Projection Big-screen TV!

that and most americans for whatever reason have a hard time picturing 9/32" - they ALSO have a hard time picturing 8mm, but at least you don't make them feel stupid for their non comprehension of fractions.

@phoomp:
You use inches when you want something to seem big, and millimeters when you want something to seem small, like inches are too big, and this thing is so small, you can't even measure it in inches - nay, to measure this requires advanced european technology. that's how advanced its thinness is.
