Blackberry is $9.95 or $19.95 on Tmo, and only when added to a voice plan. Stand alone Blackberry plans are more expensive, and require a 1/2yr agreement.

@Carmen: Lean Mean A Mans Dream Sex Machine: Some people want a device that's easy to use. I don't think Palm OS, Windows Mobile, or BlackBerry OS are so easy to use as something like Peek's software is.

I can name half a dozen overpaid, self-obsessed suits who would be all over this, if getting one didn't imply total noob status.

I wonder what ELSE it can do after it's been ... 'broken'... >:)
Actually I almost wonder if you can hack a browser into it and get a $15/mo data plan... *Almost*.

@Dakota Courtois: So maybe more development should be put into making real smartphones more user friendly instead of creating what is basically a blackberry JitterBug (jitterbug.com).

JitterBug is the dumbest cellphone a company has ever created, just looking at it makes you want to slam it on pavement.

Jitterbug is the dumbest crap thats been ever made from a cellphone company. It just screams cheesy and is asking to be slammed on pavement.

If the interface is simple enough, I see a potentially large market in older folks who only want e mail. Its inexpensive enough to give them what they want, (just email) and who knows, if they like it enough, they may break down and actually try a computer.

@Dakota Courtois: The blackberry OS is really really easy to use. If you can not use the blackberry email function you have some serious issues.
Lets go through the process
1. Go to messages from the home screen
2. Read said messages
3. Hit reply and reply.
There is nothing complex about that, further more, you can remove a tonne of the service books etc so that the menu is not cluttered.

@zimstyles: I know people that would have issues with THAT even.
I used to own a Treo 650. Hated the thing. MMS never worked even after the Deathstar "configured" it, the software needed to be reset every so often, and so on.
Now I use a Nokia 6102i. It's basic enough that it gets the job done, but I need a mobile email solution other than AT&T's shitty Xpress Mail. I'd rather a device like Peek to get the job done.

@Curves:
older folks generally have bad eyes. they would need a bigger screen.

@helldiver: Was thinking a similar thing myself. A dedicated email device should have a larger screen. If it doesn't have to be phone-small, then why make it so small? Even without attachments and pictures (which email has more and more of these days), email is better on larger screens.
Getting an email from someone using a phone-sized screen often sounds like they're writing it with a gun to their head.

@cmantito: I was thinking the same thing. With all of the Webapps out there you'd have a small low cost do-everything-except-make-calls device. I'd consider it.

Just the fact that a company can actually market and sell this is proof that more people should have smart phones.
I completely understand that you only use your phone to make and receive calls... but that's because you've never owned a phone that can do anything else.
All that data is yours for about $15 - $30 a month (and I work for Verizon... pricey much???), and you dont have to carry around two shitty "devices."

@Daytodaz3: I have owned many, many, many many many devices that can do "everything" there is to do, and I think I much prefer owning separate devices. My internet device is separate from my phone, which is separate from my laptop, which is separate from my MP3 player, which is separate from my camera. Yeah, sometimes one device crosses into another's function territory, but it's just an 'extra feature', it's not trying to replace that device (ie, my phone's camera isn't trying to replace my digital camera, and my MID which plays music isn't trying to replace my MP3 player). Ultimately, I've come to like all my devices being separate. And then with the wonders of bluetooth (which everyone also seems to hate for no good reason), they can all work together like one big happy device that does everything -- but instead of one device doing everything by itself, and doing it all poorly, it's several devices working together almost seamlessly and doing it all well!

Hello again geeks (that is, hello from Peek)
Our Peeksters are still counting the votes over in this thread from
the 50 or so people clamoring for a Peek --
[gizmodo.com]
Same offer applies here as there. Post your quiz answers on this
thread and we'll include you in the free Peeks pool.
We know you guys like your smartphones. We made one with less of
everything for people who want things to be easier. You probably know someone like this. They are the ones who find the 7 remotes in your living room annoying. They can't remember if your new TV is 1080i or 1040ez. They forward you jokes. They pay half the rent...
For them, we made a nifty email personal email service for non-geeks with less of everything:
- less setup, less than 5 minutes from Target's checkout line to
getting your emails
- less chunky, super thin (9.9mm = 30% thinner than yours),
- less cluttered, more cool looking (IDEO designed),
- less power usage so endless battery life (5 days = 2-3x yours),
- less cramped screen -- it's big and wide
- less "alt" and "shift" -- ultra simple keyboard (like, an @ key;
find that on yours),
- no new accounts -- works with your current email account (even
Yahoo! or Gmail or whatever with no ports or forwarding settings),
- no salesmen - just grab it at Target
- no contracts (0 years),
- no hidden fees (none) or other nonsense (400 page bill?),
- no Verizon/AT&T/Sprint/T-Mobile to deal with....
We'll be on the lookout for quiz answers posted here with >5 checks. Or just email me at amol at getpeek dot com like all you folks did on the last thread (you know who you are)

I cant claim to be "the sharpest tool in the box" but this doesnt make sense. to sell any of these tmobile will have to do something drastic. the only way i think you could sell these is to sell the as a single payment device. so if you walk into the store and just drop $150 and you can use it to email your friends without having to worry about paying each month. i could see teens and tourist buying them but other than that i just cant see a market for it. regards, Pete victoryinthefaceofdefeat.blogspot.com
