Palm Treo Pro Official
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 11:52 PM on August 20, 2008
This week's best kept secret just got official: The Palm Treo Pro is a Centro-sized Windows Mobile 6.1 phone (whither Palm OS?) with tri-band 3G, Wi-Fi and GPS with a 320x320 touchscreen, exactly like the recent Treo 800w. Powering the show is a 400MHz processor and 128MB of RAM. And yep, the proprietary Palm connector is ditched for micro-USB. Hurray for standards. They're selling it unlocked through the online store for US$549 in the fall. [Palm]

Damn it, Palm: You are embarrassing yourself! What are you thinking? Releasing $550 devices when you can pick up a BlackBerry 8830 for $100 at Verizon and an iPhone for $200 at AT&T? Yes, that is with a contract, but the point is that Palm would need to pay us to take their phone with competition like that.

looks like the screen is more flush with the bezel, the deep screen is the one thing i dislike about the centro, almost forces you to use the stylus

I love my Treo 800w, even though it's battery life is shabby. I'd take it over any blackberry anyday. Windwos Mobile is quite nice.
I've also had a Palm T|X and E and they were both alright but I prefer one consolidated smart device.

Who buys Palm? Are they actually still relevant?

ok, after like 20 years they got rid of the proprietary connector. So, how much more will it take until they lose the tiny keyboard? Oh, wait, Palm used to have touchscreen only...

why do people like palm devices? I'm still lost on that. It doesn't seem like this phone has anything special or worth buying for.

I wonder which company (if not all of them) will pick this up. I would kinda like to get my hands on this for Verizon since one of the Treo's was likely my next phone.

They need to cut that price by about $200. That device probably cost them under $200 in hardware to manufacture and given the feature set, other phones with just as many features (or more) can be had for quite a bit less $$.

I was a Palm supporter from the days of the Palm III (around '97, I think). I now own my first Win Mobile phone, and I will NEVER buy another Win Mobile device--this OS is slow, clumsy, and awful in almost every respect.
Palm: You could have me back in a second if you'd take some sleek hardware and put your own *upgraded* OS on it. As it is, I'm seriously considering an iPhone by the end of the year unless Android blows us all away in the fall.

theMOE has a point. WHy buy a Palm if it doesn't use the Palm OS? I can buy any of a dozen WinMo phones from other sources if I want to switch. I won't go iPhone because of
-the spelling.
-no keyboard.
-short battery life; I carry a 700p with a HUGE battery pack that weighs as much as the phone- I USE my phone all day and it needs to last.
Now, I use Palm OS because the apps I paid for match. If Palm isn't going to support it, why invest more money in apps that will never be updated? Palm has maybe, MAYBE six months to get out that new Linux-based OS. If they don't, they'll just be another phone company, which is quite a drop from where they were. A shame.
IF the Pro comes to Verizon, and IF the battery is/can be bigger than 1500mah, and IF the price is lower than $300, then maybe. Otherwise, I'm going with the HTC Touch Pro.

Very nice phone. No contract pricing? I don't think many people will pick up for $500 when they can go with the Blackberry Bold in one network, iPhone in another or whatever the hell Sprint offers. Oh, another thing... no Palm OS version? What the heck.

I dont understand how this is different than their newly released 800w. The only differences I can see is the flush screen and black color casing besides that its the same phone. How come nobody is make more mention of this?

It's too bad this has the Centro's keyboard. It's just too tiny. Business users won't like it. I'm glad the 800w has a mostly standard Treo keyboard.

Don't you guys understand this is the same strategy Palm has used for many, many years lest you forget.
Palm III -> Palm IIIxe
Palm V -> Palm Vx
Zire 71 -> Zire 72
Palm 500 -> Palm 505 -> Palm 515
And then there are all those treos. If you make slight modifications from already existing hardware and overcharge you make a profit if only a few buy. If you are a fan of Palm you'll help subsidize the 2nd coming of Palm. :-) It is the least you can do and you can add this to your Palm collection right before you buy the new one in 2009.

...looks like no CDMA. Nevermind then. :(

I actually prefer the soft gelly feel of my Centro keypad, so I might be returning my new 800w for this.

The fall? I will already have forgotten about it by then.

Didn't Palm clearly state the Palm OS was only going to be on the Centro line of low-end SmartPhones? Windows Mobile will be there Enterprise offering. Hence this new higher end phone.
Finally, they will have a middle tier with a new OS which ultimately looks like it will replace the venerable Palm OS. I for one am looking forward to the new OS.

Comparing to other WinMo devices - Palm devices have great performance and good stability. Not the fanciest but always practical - just like I love it! Exclusive pictures of the Treo Pro in here: http://mobilespoon.blogspot.com/2008/08/exclusive-pictures-of-palm-treo- pro.html
