Palm Treo Pro Live Shots
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 1:52 AM on August 16, 2008
Yesterday's leaked Treo Pro was definitely not a rendering. We've now got a whole gallery of it in the flesh, confirming its good looks, and maybe more importantly, its size. While a little taller and wider than the Centro, it's mercifully thinner than its pocket-bulging predecessor. The keyboard spacing looks like it's slightly more generous too, so it might be easier to type on, but we'll see. [Treo.net via WM Experts]

@theirishscion: Those dots ARE kinda weird. what the hell could they be? I think there is one on the right shift as well (although that one would make sense)

Does anyone else find it a bit thick?

If this was something else than WM... Why has Palm OS failed? They had everything in place AGES before anyone else: easy touch interface, simplicity, easy input method, synchronization, email... But somehow they've just failed...

What's with all the little pits in the keys? One on the Palm button and several on the thumboard keys...? A little too shiny-glossy for me too, screen could stand to be a scoshe bigger.

weak, the buttons look the same as centro, so hard to type on that piece.

@theirishscion: Actually, the dock connector is Micro USB, which is becoming standard for several different manufacturers, including Motorola, Nokia, and now Palm. The whole reason much of the industry is switching is to standardize cell phone connections, so that you can use one charger and cable across multiple devices.

Is there a Palm version of this or all new Treos sticking with Windows Mobile?
Or are they simply waiting till next year when the new Access OS comes out?

The keyboard doesn't look much different than the Centros, which shocks me. I liked it, but it was definitely a super flawed keyboard.
And it's only slightly thinner than the Centro, and the Centro is a fat duck.
These pictures crashed me back to reality. Extremely let down.

@theirishscion: Actually, I have continual connection problems with the 700p dock -- once the metal connections get dirty, it's nearly impossible to clean them well. I welcome a better connector.

@theirishscion: To clarify, is that another new and incompatible dock connector that will force me to re-buy all my accessories. I already own a full three sets of desk docks, car chargers and external keyboards for palm devices thank you very much, each billed as the last one I'd need to buy...
I love my shiny new iPhone, crap 3g, cracked cases and pitiful battery life notwithstanding, anything to avoid another WM or Palm device. At least I can use any of my extensive collection of USB/iDevice cables and they'll still work. Oh lordy, I'm turning into a fanboy...

That is a sweet looking phone. Add that one to the "which smartphone will I get if I can afford it" list.

Hmm, two things. Is that another g*ddamned dock connector? Seriously, is it? What The Fsck?!?
Also, what's with the dots on the a, e & x keys? I wonder if that's an attempt to see who's leaking product shots before the embargo is off, a unique device coding of sorts....

Looks...surprisingly good for a Treo. Did they get a new designer?

@ducttape38: Yup, that I understand, and in fairness at least this time they're kinda sorta standardizing, but it doesn't alter the fact that none of my handy dandy peripherals will work with it any more...
I do also agree that the current dock connector (and even more so, it's predecessor) were extremely poorly engineered, this can't realistically be much worse. So going forward, a positive thing, but damned annoying for previously loyal customers.
@ALT: They are definitely identifying marks, though whether that's to facilitate identification of a particular revision on sight to make testing/development easier (which is normally done w/ a sticker on the back or suchlike) or an identifier to catch leaks, I couldn't say. I have to suspect the latter though. I wonder if someone just got in trouble...

@ALT: @theirishscion: either that or someone was drinking Coke while reading the Onion on it. Could just be a grotty keyboard.
@Samifumi: Yah, I've been holding out waiting for them to get their OS sh*t together, but I've just about had it. Get your act together Palm, or we'll have to welcome our new Android overlords.

Apparently the stylus comes out of the bottom. Obviously, Palm is relying on sales of replacement styli from people losing the originals after they fall out of the phone.

I kind of like it. Can't wait to see one sporting a Palm OS, if ever.

Anyone get the feeling that Palm is orchestrating these "leaks?" I mean we are just past the iPhone hype, the 800w comes out very silently, news of the Chines production order for 2009 delivery, now we suddenly start seeing leaks of the prototypes.
This has to be attributed underground marketing of some sort. They are starting to prime the pump of desire, but the only problem, is that this device is still a bit of a disappointment(Centro keyboard?!). I was holding ut for the next Palm, but I just got my wife the Centro, and I may just go for the iPhone.
On the other hand, this still looks like a prototype, the case looks spraypainted black, and maybe (hopefully) the keyboard is just a placeholder (recycled Centro part) for the future finished design...

@mclark2112: This is the way most "leaks" work.

why do you need a 850w when the 800w just came out? and there's no way that this could even compete w/ the htc touch pro coming out.

Not bad, now if they make a Palm version, or an (even better) updated Palm Os to go with it, that would be quite nice. WinMob sucks, laggy old beast of an OS....it should put itself to sleep forever. ;-)

I still love it. Its good looking, and will finally have the processor needed to run WinMO with a reasonable speed. Plus the usual palm sauce will improve over the competition (ive tried both the ipaq 910c and the nokia e71, neither did the duty).
But what is up with the few companies that will make a touchscreen smartphone form factor and the tiny keyboards? I mean looks at all the space taken up by the d-pad and the shortcuts? That stupid, give me a bigger dang keyboard !

Do you think...that maybe...this could be an Android phone as well as a Palm OS or WinMob 6.x phone? If it ran Android and would sync with my Mac, I'd ditch the 755p in a second.

Glass touch screen? Design is nice, but WinMob is not. My Treo 650 and Palm TX are going on sale in September.
