Palm Treo Pro: Definitely Not The Same Old Palm Phone
Posted by Adrian Covert at 6:59 AM on August 21, 2008
Palm's Treo Pro was announced today, and we just got one for ourselves. The most noticeable thing about it is how small and light and shiny it is for a Palm phone. As a comparison, it sits between the Blackberry Curve and the iPhone in terms of size. It has a Centro-style keyboard, except bigger, the flush touchscreen and like the Palm 800w, the hardware seems more than adequate to run WIndows Mobile 6.1. Could this be the king of the WinMo phones? —pal check back soon for a full review. [Palm@Giz]

Nah, can't be the king of WinMo devices. Not with other manufacturers that now have VGA screens for WinMo - HTC, Sony, i-Mate, etc.

@Samifumi:If the picture quality is the same as the Treo 800w, then it is excellent with plenty of light. It does poorly, like most phone cameras, with dim to moderately lit conditions.

I think it is FINALLY what i have been searching for. Ive tried both the HP Ipaq 910c and I currently own a Tilt. I want the functionality of the tilt, with a smartphone form factor, with a big enough touchscreen (the 2.4 inches on the ipaw sucked).

@Fox Mulder: ummm palm is the company, and treo pro is the brand/model name. Thats generally how gadget nomenclature works.

I want one, even with Windows Mobile.
Picture quality?

The savior for Palm is this hardware -- running the mobile version of OS X. Leave the fully touch-screen devices to Apple, and Palm can run the Apple OS for the keyboard-equipped versions.
It's brilliant I tell you!
(All except that part about convincing Steve Jobs to license the OS, of course.)

Maybe I am missing the obvious. Is there any reason this is not called a Windows Treo or Just Treo Pro. Other than the hardware the user experience is that you are using a Windows Mobile Treo device and not a Palm Treo.
I think Treo is enough to identify the hardware.

I have to say, that is very nice looking. Just not sure I can go to that keyboard. Post says its bigger than Centro. Not sure if I can give up my moguls giant qwerty.

Dear Palm,
Ditch the stylus for the love of all that is Right, keep the keyboard, spiff up Palm OS and you will be right there contending to stay relevant.
Can you see it? Use the iPhone zoom-in thing when putting a grubby finger on text to put the cursor wherever and type away on awesome physical keyboard FTW!!! Use large icons and menus for all other things (get rid of the milimeter wide scroll bars for fsck sake!)

Anyone know if Palm's WinMo units are outselling their Palm OS units? I still have and love my 650, and would consider upgrading as long as I can get the palm OS back. My limited experience with WinMo is that it's still WinCE, and still sucks. I'm just not sure why they're seemingly abandoning such a useful, easy, intuitive OS that they themselves developed...

This combined with Android would make me give up my iPhone... maaaaybe. The phone itself is sex, no doubt. I just don't care for WinMo.

It seems to be a dead-end. The reason that they will sell is that only ATT has an iPhone. Else they wouldn't. So there is a market: Those who want nothing to do with ATT in the US and want a smartphone. "The SmartPhone for the rest of us who can't be satisfied with ATT"!

@dustin91: There're reasons why there's no cell phone manufacture wants to license PalmOS

Ohh, nice pics. It looks even better than I thought. As has said many times, WinMo kills it for me, but it's still very enticing. You Go Palm!

Hm, for those of us still lucky to be on Sprint SERO for 30$, this looks to be a good replacement for my Treo 755p. I love the iphone, but just can't give up my kickass SERO service plan

Looks like a good option. I'm probably stuck with Sprint forever as they are way cheaper than any other provider for unlimited data/low, low minute plans. Might be a good time to upgrade my 700wx.

Guess I and several others got screwed on the 800w...well at least it's GSM, who knows if/when a CDMA version will arrive.

@dmex
The 800W buyers were the paying beta testers for the Pro. Look at it this way, Pro users will have a real battery due to your suffering.
