Nite Owl's Archie Makes Us Even More Excited about Watchmen
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 11:00 PM on August 8, 2008
If the trailer and the documentaries about the construction of a real Watchmen world weren't enough to get you excited about this project, check out this short on the coolest gadget in the movie: the Owlship or Archie, like Nite Owl calls his flamethrowing, screeching, smog-producing, almost invisible and completely submergible ship. The producers have created a full scale model with every single knob, device, and detail from the original comic book. [Watchmen in Gizmodo]

Well its not a lack of effects...
using sets like these are called "practical effects", in the same way as a robot puppet from Terminator or the spinner from Bladerunner is also a "practical effect".

I must suck at life because I'd never even heard of Watchmen until it showed up in postings on here.

This is thanks to Snyder's decision to use sets over CGI as much as budget would allow.
I don't want to be excited because I don't want to be disappointed, but it's too late... my inner fanboy was stoked the minute they finally gave this film the green light.

I am loving this lack of special effects and actually making sets, Archie etc.

@GeekyNerdGuy: Whether or not the film does the book justice, you really shouldn't deny yourself the pleasure of reading the book cold for the first time.

I am 80th in line for a copy of Watchmen at the Cuyahoga County Public Library.
I am so stoked.
And so filkin' cheap it isn't funny. One of the other commenters here offered to buy me a copy. But no, I wear my patience like a thorny crown.
I'M NUMBER 80! I'M NUMBER 80!

@Killjoy: Doubt I'll get around to it. I'm not into comics.

@GeekyNerdGuy: If that's the case, I guess building it up for you hard enough to make you overcome that will probably turn your experience into a letdown. I will say that it is very un-comicky, which was one of Alan Moore's intentions. It's more like a heavily illustrated book. It also alternates between comics chapters and text-only chapters.
...or you could see the movie.
...or you could ignore it altogether! Sweet, sweet free will...

@Killjoy:
I hadn't heard of it until I saw the trailer online recently and was intrigued.
I'm almost finished reading it for the first time. Borrowed my friend's copy and will buy my own.
It's pretty great stuff. I'm excited about the movie.

I have no idea what this is about (Night Owl is a comic book?), but it looks pretty bad ass. Almost makes me want to wish I were a carpenter.

Great! All these people are running out to read the book BEFORE watching the movie. As always the book will be better then we'll have more babies crying that yet another comicbook film failed.
Anyway, that model looks awesome. I can't wait for the movie!

@AllThingsWireless: from Wikipedia:Watchmen is a twelve-issue comic book limited series written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Dave Gibbons. Originally published by DC Comics as a monthly limited series from 1986 to 1987, it was later republished as a trade paperback,[1] which popularized the "graphic novel" format. To date, Watchmen remains the only graphic novel to win a Hugo Award,[2] and is also the only graphic novel to appear on Time Magazine's 2005 list of "the 100 best English-language novels" published since the founding of the magazine in 1923.[3]
Watchmen is set in 1985, in an alternate history United States where costumed adventurers are real and the country is edging closer to a nuclear war with the Soviet Union; throughout the books, the Doomsday Clock is shown gradually ticking towards midnight. It tells the story of a group of past and present superheroes and the events surrounding the mysterious murder of one of their own. Watchmen depicts superheroes as real people who must confront ethical and personal issues, who struggle with neurosis and failings, and who-with one notable exception-lack anything recognizable as super powers. Watchmen's deconstruction of the conventional superhero archetype, combined with its innovative adaptation of cinematic techniques and heavy use of symbolism, multi-layered dialogue, and metafiction, has influenced both comics and film.
