Nikon D90's DSLR Video Capture Mode Confirmed In Pictures
Posted by John Mahoney at 1:38 AM on August 16, 2008
Nikon Rumors' D90-toting tipster sent them this juicy shot, which appears to confirm the rumoured video recording mode on the D90. By the looks of the display there might even be full exposure control plus ISO settings for video, which is awesome if true, and audio recording too. No word on resolution yet, but let's hope Nikon's leading the charge with DSLR movie capture modes here. [Nikon Rumors]

@lpranal: In camera stabilization is crap, don't wait for that. It loses effectiveness in lenses over standard lengths.
@ny_effect: I would hope so, it's been 2 years.

$1299 w/18-105vr lens. this kills the canon 40d.

Dizzamn! Thank god i stayed with my d50 all this time, passing on the minor updates which were marginal at best... if this thing had in-camera image stabilization it'd definitely seal the deal for me.

Damn i'm having a hard enough time trying to figure out what camera to by, now ive got more choices. Maybe this one will be sweet enough to make the decision for me!

Full exposure control over video????!!!!! Using fast lenses and zooms for shallow DOF control????
I am so, SO getting this bad boy.
The only concern of course is battery life as video record eats up power like hungry, hungry hippos.

@gre9del: What do you mean it's been 2 years? The 40d has not been out for 2 years... I think it's only been out 6-9 months

@Naoki - Photoshop Ninja: D80s have been popping up on chicago's craigslist like crazy the past few weeks, I'd get on the bandwagon sooner rather than later if I were you.

@gre9del: I know, but I like to shoot wide angles at night... so actually it's pretty nice on the cameras i've used with it (oly e420) even though nikon has some excellent VR lenses...

It'll be a while before I'm ready to move on from my XT, but this is something that could make me switch to Nikon.
(But will it ever be a pain to switch all my lenses - makes the 3/4 system look appealing.... at least if more cameras used it...)

I hope they don't fuck it up by making it record into some weird super-compressed format.
A $1300 camera should make video files that are easily edited in Final Cut Pro or Premiere... without the need to go through a long conversion process before you can do anything with them.
It should be a file format that is different than a $100 digicam uses.

Damn damn damn. Canon, WTF? I have a bunch of $$$ invested in Canon lenses, and I get it, you buy into a lens system after awhile, not a camera system. And yeah, these guys supposedly will leap-frog each other constantly. All that said though, man Nikon is kicking Canon in the nuts lately as far as bells 'n whistles, some of which are quite nice. C'mon Canon! Nikon brings you shame!

Sorry, but I call obvious PhotoChop on this one. Look at the text of the "Rec" and recording time indicator versus the rest of the icons and text in the display. Not even close.

ugh. am I the only one who thinks putting video on a DSLR is the worst idea known to man?
If you want a high-def video camera, buy a fucking video camera. If you want an extremely sharp photo camera, buy a DSLR. By crossing them, they're just reducing it to a P&S status.
Besides, how much video are you really going to be able to capture? maybe 5 minutes max? What's the point in that.
I seem like i'm in the minority, but I'm never going to buy a D90. I'll continue saving up for a D300 and continue to use my D50.

the only question is, What format are videos recorded in, and what resolution?
Sounds like DSLR market is trying to blurr the lines between Video cameras.

@BrandonOBrien:
It's practically foretold in the stars that SLRs and ProSumer video will merge as technology advances. As sensor chips get more sensitive, SLRs achieve faster shooting speeds. It's only a matter of time before 24fps can compress/compile multiple images (even at 20 megapixels) into a video stream.
I personally welcome our new camera overlords.

This is the worst idea I've ever seen. SLRs are meant to take great pictures. I don't want to pay more for a camera to have the capability to record videos. Video Camcorders are meant for that.

For all those who think this is a bad idea, most sub-$1000 Nikon's don't even have a live-view LCD, meaning you still have to use the viewfinder. Adding video would automatically add the feature. And knowing Nikon, this camera will be below $1000 in no time. And I'd trade my D60 for a D90 in a heartbeat.

@WolfDemon: Video camcorder CCDs are tiny leaving you with a huge DOF outside of super zoomed shots. The beauty of using a large sensor and fast lenses are getting professional looking results where focus is sharply on your subject blurring out the background. It just isn't possible outside of the professional grade video equipment.
Of course SLR cameras are meant for superb looking pictures, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't also be allowed to take superb looking video. If I could have my cake and eat it to, you're goddamn right I would stuff my pie hole.

I'm probably the only person who's going to say this, but why? I don't ever find myself needing video on my DSLR. If I think there's even a remote possibility that I'm shooting video I'll toss my little HDV cam in the bag too and be good to go. I'm all for convergence of electronics but not on DSLRs.

Liveview on an slr= complete lack of stability. Video on an slr= super shaky movies and highly reduced battery life. Video takes a lot of processing, especially high quality video. I don't think this is the greatest idea...

@Diskoboy - right, there's a reason live view isn't, most prosumer and professional photogs don't see the need. Most of us use our bodies to produce shots for work or art purposes and aren't trying to grab a frame of the toddler playing with the dog in the back yard. I don't care if a body has video or live view. I'm a photographer. I own DSLR and SLR bodies. I like taking still pictures. There are still those who engage in photography as an art form, vs squeezing of thousands of frames hoping one might just come out, and most of us don't give a flying f what live view option a body has, it's pointless.
