New Dell Latitude Biz Notebooks: As Light as 1 Kilo, Up to 19 Hours Battery Life
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 2:59 AM on August 13, 2008
Dell is loosing seven--yes, seven--new Latitude business notebooks today. Rather than recount each model in detail and scrambling your brain since they (and their accompanying options) go in a million directions from ultraportable to semi-rugged, here's the basic list of new features:
•Ridiculous battery life--some configs will go to 19 hours.
•Wireless N, Bluetooth, Ultra-wideband, mobile broadband, WiMax and GPS options
•Hardware disk encryption, Dell ControlVault, fingerprint readers and other security stuff
•Full-frame magnesium alloy construction
•Backlit keyboards, USB Powershare, DisplayPort
•E4200 and E4300 have Dell Latitude ON, an instant boot mode for email, contacts, internet, etc., that supposedly will give you multi-day battery life via a dedicated low-voltage sub-processor

Hope that Mini-Inspiron hits soon...
These look cool too, of course. :)

@Brassen: It allows you to charge your mobile devices, like your iPod, even when the computer is off.

I find 19 hours battery life hard to believe.

Well i guess i found out why it can get up to 19 ohurs of battery:
"Dell Latitude ON. It is an application that gives you access to your e-mail, contacts, calendar, attachments and the Internet without the need to boot into the system's main OS. The Dell Latitude ON mode will enable multi-day battery life since it utilizes a dedicated low-voltage sub-processor and operating system. I'll share more specifics on this feature in the future. "

@Y2KGTP: @Eruanno: Since some ordinary systems around now can get 10hrs (if you care about such things this isn't hard to find, but most people don't look at this spec when they buy and end up with a paltry 1.5hrs), an additional battery slice on the bottom should be able to double that.

@Brassen: according to the main article, it allows you to charge devices by USB w/o powering on the laptop. Kind of like an always on USB port, which is kind of nice.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one excited by the Dell E or mini Insperion or whatever the hell they will be calling it. Asus is pissing me off with the pricing on the 701 (For instance the 8G cost the same as one of the 8.9 inch models...), mostly that the 4g is still overpriced despite new Asus models and competitors. And I think Dell can actually release the netbook for the prices they've hinted at. As long as the Ubuntu netbook remix ships on it, Im sold.

Dell sucks. I bought a battery about 2 months ago online and still haven't received it...

@laio: I highly doubt Dell would tout a battery claim like this if the path too it was so dubious. i tried to check these systems out to find the real answer, but can't see all the links from work.

Didn't the latitude used to have a god damned trackpoint?
I'd seriously consider this machine if it had a trackpoint option - touchpads are crazy difficult to use in any efficient manner.

@ crazyshoes I can confirm that they do infact have a trackpoint. you can see them in the gallery at engaget [www.engadget.com]
@ those interested in the mini inspiron, I wish I could spill the beans, but I need my paycheck

@katsushiro: Holly geez, thank you kindly for showing me a thing or three! I was really bummed out for a minute there when I thought the last bastion of Dell's trackpoint offerings was getting phased out.

As an Apple owner, I've got to admit: damn, Dell is coming after Apple big time. Their XPS laptops were hot, the Studio laptops are hotter, and now this. Backlit keys. Insane battery life. Instant-on. Apple's been riding on their laurels with the dated MBP design for what, six years now? Their latest effort, the MacBook Air, is a total joke.
Here's a prediction: Unless the next-gen Mac laptops dispense whiskey and blowjobs, my next laptop will probably not be a Mac.

Apple's current macbook (pro) designs have lasted this long because their competitors are still trying to catch up with them. I'll tilt my hat at Sony though, they have show innovation and good taste in their higher end Vaio's.

Now if only Apple got off their butts and come up with something as portable, functional and long-lasting, I'd be sold. Can't live without Mac OS X anymore. :) This email and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed.
