Netflix's Shipping Systems Have Been FUBARed Since Tuesday
Posted by Jason Chen at 6:00 AM on August 15, 2008
CNBC reports that Netflix' shipping systems have been at least partially broken since Tuesday. They managed to ship nothing on Tuesday, half of what they were supposed to on Wednesday, and nothing today. What's the deal?
Apparently the outage affects 1/3 of their customers, to whom Netflix is trying to figure out the best way to refund some cash. They're still not sure what the root of the problems are, so in essence, they have no idea how to fix it. Be prepared for a few more days of outages, unless it turns out that it's a super easy fix that's much harder to diagnose than to repair. Your Bernie Mac marathon will have to wait. :( [CNBC via Valleywag - Image Credit]

Brooklyn NY, completely hosed here. No apology email but there was the alert on my home page.
No confirmation that they have received anything I sent, nor anything has gone out all week.

I got the "oopsie" email today too (Los Angeles area) but our mail hasn't been delivered yet so I don't know if the first disk of The Ascent of Man is here or not. They offered a credit. That's fine with me.
A lot of other companies take the "Them's the breaks" attitude toward such things, so being offered a credit is downright refreshing.

I have yet to receive an email. However mine has been delayed, at least according to my account page on their website.

No idea how to fix it? What is the problem? Shipping, packaging, receiving, sorting? It should be easy to identify the problem. The solution, not so easy.

That's their freaking problem. It looks like they can only sent movies out the 13 people at a time, specifically because it looks like those greedy bastards are renting them all.

Yeah, i got an email from netflix being like, "oops.... our bad." They offered to credit me for the missing days or whatnot. (arlington, va btw. in case anyone cares about the location.)
Kinda sucks. I'm waiting on the last disc of Tudors season 1, and the first 3 discs of Doogie Howser, season 3. (hell yes, doogie howser. NPH for the win.)
I appreciate that they're going to credit the missing days. Obviously, i'm not pleased about the waiting, but such is life, right?

Their delivery system runs at a constant pace all the time. Adding more work only means delivery schedules shift. That can not possibly break the machinery.
That would be like saying Chirstmas breaks all the USPS machinery.

Yeah, I was wondering why the same day I got upgraded from the lawsuit that all my movies were held in shipping status. Now I see the alert in my queue. Oh well, I'm sure they'll take care of it.

Two days of no service and they feel the need to refund that? Pretty damn noble if you ask me. Their customers should be thanking them up one side and down the other!!!

Well, they notified me before I realized there was an issue, so that's cool. We'll see what their credit is. Either way I'm slammed right now so no movies isn't a bad thing.

I think i know what it is.
Anyone else get an email from Netflix saying a class action lawsuit had been settled an you are entitled to a free month of Netflix?
The email included a link to sign up for the offer and start ordering DVDs.
This email went out on Tuesday - I have a feeling that so many people from the class action signed up for their free month that it brought down their delivery system.

That makes no sense. Why schedule maintenance on Tuesday and Wednesday, when they actually ship things, instead of, you know, Saturday and Sunday, when they do not ship?

I got the apology email yesterday here in Corpus Christi, Texas. Then today, the next three flix in my queue arrived in my mailbox. Funny thing is, the turnaround from the shipping facility in Houston was much, much quicker this time. The Netflix outage worked in my favor. Anyone else have a similar experience?

HEY! I think i might have a clue what the problem is.
I almost forgot about this.
In my previous batch of dvds, they double-sent me one of the discs. I got two copies of disc 3 of The Tudors, season 1.
This has never actually occurred previously for me. I've been a netflix member for about 3 years now. It's possible that a glitch in their shipping system is double sending dvds, without making a record of such. Obviously, this could be problematic... reducing immediate stock, and losing dvds to unsavory customers who just keep their extra discs.
Anyone else have this problem only recently? Or ever, for that matter? I suppose it could just be an untimely coincidence, but i'm loath to assume coincidence. It's much more fun to assume connection and causality.

Our shipping system is unexpectedly down. We received a DVD back from you and should have shipped you a DVD, but we likely have not. Our goal is to ship DVDs as soon as possible, and we will keep you posted on the status of your DVD shipments.
We are sorry for any inconvenience this has caused. If your DVD shipment is delayed, we will be issuing a credit to your account in the next few days. You don't need to do anything. The credit will be automatically applied to your next billing statement.
Again, we apologize for the delay and thank you for your understanding. If you need further assistance, please call us at 1-888-638-3549.

@fyngyrz: You think that people that are interested in renting (not purchasing) a DVD of The Sopranos or Doogie Howser MD (see above) really care about the difference in quality between a rental downloaded on AppleTV vs. BluRay?
For collectors purchasing movies for their library, there is not doubt that BluRay is the way to go right now. But for the casual NetFlix viewer, who's only going to watch the rental once and send it back, services like Vudu will do just fine.

I sent two back on Monday and received two more today. Since they listened to their members and kept the multiple queues on single accounts after announcing they were doing away with that feature, I'm more than happy to cut them some slack. If more companies were run like Netflix it would be a better consumer world.

The amount of grief Netflix has saved me is more then enough for me to look the other way for a couple days of outage. I spend too much time on the couch anyhow.
And sorry Ken_Darrow, while this may not be "logical", I still get a bitter taste in my mouth when I see a Blockbuster sign and I think of all the "late charges" I paid to their company. If I have to deal with a slightly less efficient system to avoid that bad taste, so be it. Anyhow, I think Netflix is a dollar cheaper per month (I think), and that makes up for it for me.

Blockbuster is much better that Netstinks. Bring the DVDs to the store and depending on your account, get DVDs at the store free for exchange. They log your returned mailed envelopes and instantly start shipping your DVDs on que. No snail mail wait.

Perhaps the machinery at NetFlix threw itself down in disgust over the ease of streaming media like the XBox360, Vudu, Apple TV, and soon, the PS3?
EBone
Posted 7:26 AM 15/8/08
In reply to something Ebone said, are there not some "casual" Netflix customers who are also building up a library? You know, renting dvd's and then ripping, burning, and adding them to their collections? Not that I'd engage in such illicit behavior...

@newgalactic: I agree, my mother and I rented two movies from Blockbuster (days of the VHS), "Three Kings," and "The Astronauts Wife." When we got home in the "Three Kings" box was a doc on Bats. So we watched Astro's wife and were like, it was an okay movie. So we returned them the next day. They were nice and give us "Three Kings" without any problems. A few days later we got a notice saying that "Astronauts Wife" was late. Mother called and told them we returned it. They said no we didn't and than proceeded to tell us that we will be charged $99 for loosing a video.
Needless to say we never paid, and never went back.
Posted 7:50 AM 15/8/08
I don't see why people hate on blockbuster so much. At least these days with the no late fees and all. I started using Blockbuster's online service back when it first started so I still have a really good price. $17.99/month for 3 out at a time and unlimited in-store exchanges, plus two free game/movie rentals a month. It works great when you are watching a tv series and just HAVE to get the next dvd(s) right away.
Anyway, I feel bad for netflix customers, but at least they are compensating. I used to use Netfilx and they were always great with their turnarounds.
Posted 7:46 AM 15/8/08
I say start shipping VHS tapes, now that would be pretty cool. No one else is providing that service.

I'm in the LA area and got 2 of 3 shipped yesterday, arrived today. They were delayed by a day and I've still got a 3rd one MIA. Their site's still showing a pretty serious case of "We're not quite sure what's going on here."
I'm not working right now, so it's disappointing to not be able to have as many DVDs to kill time with, but as long as they credit for the downtime, I'm cool with it. If you want to see some hilarious apoplexy, check out the threads at Hacking Netflix on this topic. You'd think someone cut off these folks' supplies of food and water, not DVDs.
It'll be interesting to see what actually caused this and how preventable it could have been, though. If it could have been prevented by simple redundancies, then I think that raises serious questions about how Netflix is managing their resources.
