NEC Wireless USB Prototype Just As Fast As USB 2.0
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 4:00 AM on August 24, 2008
Wireless USB has finally begun to match regular USB 2.0 speeds, making our inevitable launch into a life untethered by the confines of copper and rubber cabling all the more forthcoming. At the Fall 2008 Intel Developer Forum, NEC unveiled a WUSB prototype that transfers at speeds of 200Mbits per second. The company didn't mention the effective range or when it plans on commercialising its new technology, but it's still exciting news for all of us who have trouble finding our desks under the tangle of our various USB doohickeys. What kinds of security is this going to have? Not sure that I want to transfer sensitive information wirelessly. Who knows who might be trying to look at my midget pronz :/

Don't they have something kinda like this already called Bluetooth?

I don't know whether to be more excited over this or USB 3.0. UGH!

Can Wireless USB receive data from an infinite number of sources, or are we just ushering in an era of having wired Wireless-USB Hubs where our current Wired-USC hubs are currently plugged in?

i really dont see a need for this.

so what? all my cable usb 2.0 devices are still a mess.
unless i just happen to have a small pendrive-like female part to just connect non wireless devices without wires!

Cool! now I can hot-plug my tooth fillings and have high-speed network access even in my sleep!

Oh sure, just as fast as USB2.0, until you put it behind a wall.
@kOtic: Bluetooth is no way close to USB's transfer rates.

@glaeven: I agree. The USB device would still be wired to the hub, and the hub would need power. What we need is wireless routers with usb ports so we can have wireless access to files on an external harddrive via wireless... oh wait, that already exists, and I'm using it. Also as was noted by kOtic bluetooth already exists, why didn't bluetooth takeover again?

I'd be more excited about this, if it didn't realize that it means that we're about to see a whole new crop of wireless USB pole dancers and humping dogs from the likes of Brando and Thanko....

Bluetooth is one of the biggest letdowns of the technology world.

@markarian: i agree, if this is gonna replace bluetooth than I'm excited.

What's with the "width" in bandwidth being covered up in the picture?

Your USB cables are made of rubber? Strange.

As an basic helpdesk tech, I ALREADY hate this hardware.
Every time someone has some problem with something wireless, narrowing down the problem involves 25 layers of software and 200 layers of hardware abstraction. MOST OF THE TIME, however, the wireless crap in question contributes exactly ZERO (if not some negative amount) to the person's productivity, and simply replacing the crap with reliable-as-the-ground-under-your-feet, impervious-to-basic-rf-eavesdropping-attacks wired hardware is the Right Solution. But, as a tech, I can't say that.

@laio: That's what I was hoping for too, but nooo. Besides, you'd have to power it somehow, most client devices don't provide (much) power to the port..
Bluetooth is decent for what it should be used for, the problem is many products that try to make use of bluetooth for things it was never designed to do - "Hey look, we made an ice maker than can make 300 cubes/minute." "It doesn't work..." "Oh, well that's cause your piping standard can't get the water there fast enough, it's a problem with the plumbing standard." -- I'm not saying that something couldn't do better than bluetooth, but I am saying that for "personal area networking"-type solutions, it's pretty good at what it does.

@kOtic:
Bluetooth is low power, and fairly slow... it also has a fairly weak security and pairing protocol.
Wireless USB will be cool as soon as they can bundle it up with wireless power. That was half the point of the first USB standard, putting (a bit of) power and enough data in one cable for relatively low power devices like mice, keyboards, webcams, that sort of thing to use.
