NEC Packs All Blu-ray Functions on Single Chip, Smaller Players to Come
Posted by John Mahoney at 1:00 AM on August 5, 2008
The EMMA 3PF is the first large-scale integration (LSI) chip to pack all of the necessary Blu-ray controllers onto a single piece of silicon. The new chip performs all audio and video decoding, analogue to digital conversions, and HDMI output. It supports the Blu-ray 2.0 profile and will start shipping in September 2008, allowing player sizes to continue getting ittier and bittier. [Tech ON]

If they are doing this to make Blu-Ray players smaller and that is the only advantage then they are sorely mistaken. Players that are too small end up becoming an issue for most home theater setups as they are no longer stackable and at times hinder air flow of other components.

How much power does this LSI chip chew threw? Hopefully it'll offer huge improvements over the cell.. Problem is Blu Ray might never take off the way Sony expected.

Price!
Until Blu-ray players (and recorders) come down in price, standard DVD players will continue to be the norm.

More important than player size is player price. This should bring prices down even further next year, which is great news. Within just a few years it's going to be very difficult to find a DVD-only player on store shelves.

Single chip solutions tend to reduce support components and make manufacturing easier so I would hope that smaller prices will follow.
