Muwi Concept Lawnmower Turns Waste Grass into Playthings
Posted by Kit Eaton at 8:18 PM on August 20, 2008
The electric-sheep lawnmower may have tickled your fancy, but this Muwi concept mower from designer Yuli Sung will have you scratching your head. The concept's roughly the same as the sheep: It automatically assesses the grassy areas, and then cuts the lawn without supervision required. Cunningly, it grabs the grass cuttings inside where they won't lie around setting off people's hay fever. But then it does something strange... it compacts the cuttings into toys. Scratching yet? The second image makes it clearer.
Okay, so the ball could be considered more a plaything, while the grass disks are perhaps more suited for piling up as ad-hoc lawn chairs. Although there's always the possibility of a game of giant grass Frisbee... How many sneezes and streaming eyes would that set off, I wonder? Those grass "bails" would easy to pick up and chuck onto the compost pile too.
Nice lateral thinking here, and for once it's a concept that I'd love a manufacturer to get to grips with for real. [Yanko design]

Lawn spheres FTW!
Lawn discs less so.

"'Muwi' is the natural act that surpasses human consciousness, defining a perfect act." - Wait, isn't this a lawnmower?
I love how those wacky Japanese attach such lofty words to a contraption that makes grass balls.

Because those toys won't fall apart the second a significant force is applied to them. I see nothing but frustration here. They should have marketed the wafers as more of a way to keep the clippings out of your lawn than a seat.

I think the "toys" would make great kindling for campfires and fireplaces, once they dried out.
But to play with them would kill me.

I love the complex word usage thing. Look, we should have a word for complex idea compression into words! English is SO linear. We have to spell every single thing out. With the exception of words like "love".
The Russians are particularly notorious for having super complex words. Because they are (or were) a very poetic culture, they compressed very complex emotions into single words. I can't remember where I read this concept. I believe it was the Unbearable Lightness of Being by Gibran. There is a word in there describing the feeling of standing by a lake remembering a past loved one. Holy crap!

Wouldn't it be easier to just shred the grass to a fine flaky consistency, like those cheapo parsley flakes that come in plastic shakers?
It'd certainly be better for the lawn and better for the environment.

So, based on the illustration, the lawn mower is the size of an oil drum. Oil drum sized round WALL-E's running around pooping green discs and blobs in your lawn. Nice.

So the lawn would be automatically mowed, but you still have to walk around and pick up random grass discs and balls. Not only that, but what about sticks or the occasional whiffle ball that has made it's way in front of the mower? This (assuming it ever gets produced) is just another rich people toy. However, I don't even see them buying it as they already have a playroom full of mexicans fixing their lawns.

@Theravada: i believe that's korean, not japanese. the designer is trying to explain the word "muwi" in english, and from that you can see how the name relates to the idea of the product.

Roomba for your lawn? Lawnba? Complete with realistic robot droppings? Maybe I'm evil, but the implications of compressed balls of fresh lawn shavings makes me want to throw them at people with allergies....

Although, it would be neat if it could make cubes and pyramids too. Damnit, what's the painting I'm thinking of with the orange pyramids and the weird shapes?

@FrankenPC: So? There is a word in Latin the literally translated means: To force another man/boy to suck your c0ck.
Not to mention my personal favorite (ecfutouo (sp?)): To be tired from excessive sex.
And this is the language used quite often in the Vatican?

BTW, why have a lawn anyway? I mean seriously, how ridiculously wasteful is it to grow grass only to keep cutting it every week? Make a real garden instead.

The two characters together could be translated as "without effort" or "without cost".
In light of that, it makes the Engrish in the ad more understandable.

Compressing wet/green grass will result in combustion.
That's why farmers don't bail green grass and let it dry into hay. These "toys" will also reek after a couple of days.
