Motorola Cannot Possibly Stop Sucking Until After Mid-2009
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 6:10 AM on August 5, 2008
Motorola's mobile devices division has a new CEO, Sanjay Jha, from Qualcomm. Huzzah! With some new direction, maybe they'll stop doing that massive sucking thing they've been doing for the last couple years, right? Sure, but not anytime soon. In a conference call shortly after his official coronation, he admits that "between here and the middle of next year" not much can change—you'll have to wait until the second half of 2009 to see the new (and hopefully less sucky) Motorola. Meaning we've got another year of Razrs, ROKRS and Qs to look foward to. Sigh. [Silicon Alley Insider]

With any luck, the first thing he'll do is high someone to revamp the naming schema. Otherwise MOTO = LOSR in my book.

When I see ROCKR, I hear Roker in my head, and think of a fat, jolly black man.

Nothing Motorola has done has come close to their success with the Startac phone - in my opinion. I owned TWO of those phones, one after the other and I've never done that with any other phone. The Razr was big, but the thin thing was quickly duplicated. No-one matched the sheer awesomeness and futuristic coolness of the Startac.

Here's the thing: there are people that work at Motorola. There are people who used to work there who own stock in the company because it was part of an employee purchase plan.
I'm sick of people saying MOT should die. Yes there products suck, yeah the names need to change. But showing it going down in a fireball or saying just die already does nothing for the morale of thousands of people who work there to pay the bills, keep a roof over their heads or feed there families.
Give it a shot. Give it an honest, fair shot. There was a day not so long ago when Apple sucked too.

@mandrax: You've got a point.
The product line needs serious revamping . . . but that doesn't make M dead.

I have a few pet peeves about my PEBL, but overall it's been very dependable.

@mandrax: I thought Apple had censored all forms of media to cut that period of time out?

@mandrax:
I think people keep forgetting that Motorola does something more than just make phones. Take a look at your police department and fire department, odds are they're using Motorola radios and infrastructure.

I love my Q9m. I started to hate it for a while 'cause it was getting really crappy battery life (like 16 hours) but then I updated the firmware and turned off the predictive text and now it rocks the casbah once again.

My Q9m is the best phone I've had so far, only real downside with it is the microsoft OS, if I could run linux on it it would be perfect.

I don't understand why people are saying that Motorola sucks. I have a L7 SLVR and I really like it.

one sure win for the company would be a re-release of the star tac. not some lame-assed reboot, but the original.
minimal specs, and some good battery life
some of us just make phone calls.....

I've owned/hacked nothing but Moto's since the RAZR came out way back when. Currently I have the Z9 3G slider and I just love the thing. I sure hope they pull themselves out of the gutter because the Moto phones are the best to hack. Just check out ModMyMoto.com and look at all the fun stuff you can do to a Moto!

Of course, you're being presumptuous in assuming the plan for the next 12 months doesn't already include new product lines. I'm sure they have known for awhile that you can come up with a completely new phone and make the mistake of relating it to your old phone (RAZR2), and people are too idiotic to know they're different. I'm sure they've known for a while that they need to do something different. One hopes that while the number of new products dwindled for the last year, they were building new, different products.
We know you're all Apple fanbois here at Giz, but geez, this is a major American company employing thousands of people. Root FOR them, not against.

Ever use a Motorola HD-DVR? What a piece of work. Slow, always freezes, HDMI compatibility issues, no native resolution pass through, and a royal pain to program for. Tivo is having a hell of a time getting a bare bones version of it's interface to work correctly on those boxes. Motorola does make more than just phones. As far as I'm concerned, the only good thing to come out of Motorola so far is trunked two way radio systems and digital radio systems for public safety and private communication.

Motorola was decent back in the day when they werent worried about making pretty phones All they make nowadays is crap! The Razr 2 is what they should have released back when the original Razr came out, the Razr was a HUGE let down and Nokia will reign supreme!
