Motherboard Walls Add That Special Something To Your Next Remodelling Project
Posted by John Mahoney at 11:30 PM on August 13, 2008
These are the walls of a Human-Computer Interaction Institute lab at Carnegie Mellon, and as you can see, they provide plenty of opportunities to create such interactions on the fly when you snag your sweater on some spiky solder leads or that ZIF socket handle. Chris Harrison, a PhD student, bought old motherboards on eBay by the pound to completely adorn the lab in mo-bos. And while this is great for the computer science lab and maybe OK for the garage (maybe), don't even think about doing this in your bedroom if you ever want to have sex again. It does look pretty sweet, though.

Unless you gave it a retro styled cover to look like a very old computer, this looks pretty tacky, in my opinion.

That proves it, nerds are not interior designers and never will be.
Personally, I've built plenty of PCs and never found a MoBo attractive unless it was behind glass with some cool LEDs glowing off it. This just looks like a junkyard on walls.

Another great use for worthless equipment that originaly cost thousands of dollars.
He should put power to them so the little LEDs would flash.

The only way it could be cooler is if he painted them all. That would be amazing.
Motherboard textured walls.

That doesn't look cool at all... but neither does the peg board the boards are hanging on.

I'm sure all those metals leaching into the air isn't harmful at all. I mean.. I try to breathe in as much particulate matter as possible.

aren't motherboards made out of some pretty toxic plastics? i mean what if this place lit on fire?

not very good if you have allergies. I could not survive in that basement more then a few minutes unless he hours spends every day vacuuming the walls to remove accumulated dust. But it looks cool in pictures :)

Saw a guy the other day who put a motherboard on the lid of his bag/man-purse.
It looked equally horrific.

He should make at least a couple of em working computers. That would be awesome. Make an HTPC and get a nice HDTV...

Snarkiness aside, if he'd bothered to remove all the chips, sockets, capacitors, etc. and leave only the on-board circuit traces, this might actually look kinda cool. As is, it's just butt-ugly.

@parliamentpoet: It doesn't work like that, it's that things turn into what you're thinking about. For instance, if a tall person walked by and I was thinking about dinosaurs, they could turn into a dinosaur for a few seconds. But the hallucinations don't stay more than a few minutes before your brain moves onto something else, like a "wall breathing". More likely than not, you wouldn't be able to comprehend motherboards on walls because motherboards don't GO on walls. It would just give you a horrible trip because your brain would be sub-consciously confused until you left the room.

I think you are all overlooking the true health benefits. When "they" try to scan your brain from "out there", their scanning devices will get confused going through all those processing lines and think you are a super genius and stop messing with you like they been messin' with me all these years. Ohhh the humanity!!!

I suppose the aesthetics are a bit lacking for an HCI lab. These seem to lack both form and function.

This is a deeply horrible idea. How can you stagger drunk into the wall if the wall fights back in a pokety stabbity rip-your-skin-away way? Not to mention stumble/trip/fall and instead of merely a bruised ego, gaining a series of nasty lacerations, probably filthy ones since no one's going to dust them...

Pretty crazy sweet! Does anyone else see the strong resemblance to some of the levels in Doom? hahaha :)
Yeah, I've already had PCBs on my wall for "art" purposes. I've got the PowerPC 604e daughter-card of my old PowerComputing PowerTower Pro 225 on the wall, and my dad has a 286 motherboard and a Quadra 650 motherboard on the wall in his computer room.
I have literally a couple boxes just full of old motherboards.. this seems like a pretty valid use of them! ;)

Resistance is futile. The cube will be completed in 20 years. Unfortunately, he won't be propagating any new drones to help, since earth women kind avoid these kinds of forward thinkers. Yadda yadda, something, overlords, yadda.

I would totally do this for a computer lab that was separate from my bedroom. I would also add different colored LEDs all over it. that combo would make it look like the beta edition of the BORG.

I bet that if you cooked a motherboard at a few degree above the melting point of solder, those components would just fall off but why bother.
Just take a bunch of high res photos and make none toxic wallpaper
