Modder Adds Working Touchscreen to PSP
Posted by John Mahoney at 9:00 AM on August 11, 2008
PSP modder jube808 has added a working touchscreen to his PSP, as part of his efforts to add features he feels Sony dropped the ball on with his beloved handheld. The on-screen keyboard looks pretty responsive, and can be used with fingers or a stylus. Such a mod is probably making PSP homebrewers salivate with PSP/DS hybrid potential. Another video has a closer look at the whole rig.

I'd actually waste some money on a handheld with this kind of functionality

wouldn't it be cool if he added a phone and a camera to it too? If there was a device like that that could play mp3s, movies, go online, make phonecalls, and all with a touch screen would make millions!! Think of the possibilities!

I think if they made a fully functional touchscreen and a program like Colors for the DS, I would never put my PSP down.
@BiZarRroBALlmeR: It's Sony is filled to the brim with failure. They don't see the potential their little machine has.
@Griffehpoo: I find it funny this is what people keep asking for, but when you actually look at the position your hands would be in, it really isn't that great for anyone that has moderate to large sized hands.

Flame retardant cloak *ON*
Isn't it disappointing the PSP doesn't get updates like, say, iPods have over the years? Why hasn't the PSP become a mobil platform as well as a game player? It's been the same thing as it was 5 years ago (4 years ago?). Maybe it does more than I'm aware of. But I don't see too much coverage here on Giz....maybe they should build one out of legos.

Could he have modded a working 2nd analog instead? That's what I really wanted.

@Naoki: Except Iphone gaming doesnt have any good titles yet and isn't a proven platform.

@BrianJ7: although it's not a "proven platform" as of yet... It is more powerful than a DS and not as powerful as a psp... I have Tetris, Monkeyball, and motionx dice and I think it's a great handheld platform (wishing for RPGs)

This is an amazing feat of mod engineering and is certainly brag-able all joking aside. I wonder what Sony thinks when users do amazing things to thier PSPs that totally pwn3d anything sony has released. I am an avid PSP OE user and I love the looks I get when people are looking over my soldier as I play mario 64 on my psp.

@metalgear08: Oh, I'm sure to be ergonomic they'd have to release a clunky add-on for it. But so many of the games that exist for it could really, really use one, badly. I'll sacrifice some portability for a big jump in usability gladly. Mine won't fit (comfortably) in any pocket except my cargo pockets, anyway.

@Griffehpoo: i always thought a second analog stick would feel awkward. mod is cool but i never wanted the psp to have a touchscreen

@Naoki: Good one! thou I dont see the iPhone as a match for the PSP when it come to gaming.. but it still has the guts to prove it in the future

Before the PSP get the touch screen, I would prefer two L & two R buttons and a Right analog stick, And dont touch my screen, I know everybody is just juicing in their panties to have something with a screen that you can control your device with and scratch and grease up the F----ing screen, but I dont like people touching my screens, they did that already when they werent supposed to now they are SUPPOSED to touch the screen? screw that, DONT TOUCH MY SCREEN!
