Modded Millennium Falcon Can Pass for Real Movie Prop
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 2:09 AM on August 7, 2008
Giz reader Peter Clute saw the impressive Hasbro Millennium Falcon and instead of just buying it to play and go all pew-pew with it, he decided to make it better, painting new wear and tear details, and adding a motion sensor and infrared sensor, and a load of extra LEDs. The results are impressive:
The very next thing I did was set to tearing it apart to see how it worked. Once I had it apart, I decided to add some additional LED running lights and some interior lights as well. In all I have about 18 hours into this project and I am pleased with the results. Needless to say Pete Jr is certainly excited about it too.
If the cockpit wasn't out of proportion, this would have been a perfect model for the movie. [Peter Clute]

@Sean Harrington: That sir, is OBVIOUSLY Flangorian Herb Tea residue from "Han and Chewie Adventures #6" in which Han has the Space Flu and a well meaning but misunderstanding Chewie tries to scald him back to good health by throwing it at him.

Interesting that he's using Unleashed figures instead of the 3 3/4" figures for display.

Yes, but did he modify the hyperdrive? If not, he'll be getting a paltry 13 parsecs on the Kessel Run...

-and a perfect idea, too.
Lots of room for mods in that thing, and it just looks great.
He's made some special modifications of his own.

Looks like he had fun, but he was REALLY sloppy with the black-wash... look at the top of the control panel (inside1.jpg). The black-wash puddled up on top and was allowed to dry.
And if you're going to put LEDs in, either light-pipe them, or hack the top and black them out a bit so they don't LOOK like bare LEDs hanging there.

I think it could make the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs for sure. Of course, to scale.

No, it wouldn't be the perfect model for the movie - the proportions are all wrong. It's too thick, it's too short and stubby.

I'm all for seeing people mod their toys, but I would agree that the LEDs are a little garish. I'd be interested in knowing if any of the LEDs he added were present on any of the movie models. If you have LEDs that are exposed, they can be overpainted to make them stand out a little less. I used to build odd little spaceships out of leftover model parts as a kid, and I found that I got the best lighting effects if I used glass fiber from those dopey puffball fiber color-changing lights you could get at spencers.... you just glue a bundle of those things on the end of an LED and start putting lights everywhere you can drill a little hole. Looked great, and not so overpowering.

I'm not personally a fan of obscure references, but this is pretty much part of our shared popular culture at this point, and the fact that you guys seem completely clueless about a subject is on par with some of the dumbest comments I've ever seen; and I should know. I say stupid shit all the time.

oh geez...the whole "parsec" thing...it always has to show up.
from [www.answers.com]
"The most famous use (or misuse) is from Star Wars: A New Hope. In the Mos Eisley Cantina, Han Solo refers to the Millennium Falcon as "the ship that made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs". It is not clear whether the unit is being used to measure time or distance in this context. However, later novels in this fictional universe attributed this claim to the ability of the Millennium Falcon to reach the planet Kessel in the shortest distance despite having to pass near a very dangerous region of space, The Maw, populated by numerous black holes. This shorter course would require them to cut closer to the black holes of The Maw, implying a higher ship speed to avoid the stronger gravitational forces involved in the route."
i thought nerds like you guys would already know this stuff.
wait...i know this stuff...i'm a NERD! *gasp*

It might be able to pass for the movie props from Blade Runner or Lost, but not Star Wars. Sure, it's a huge improvement over the old Kenner design, but it still has a long way to go before it'll be accurate enough to pass as the original movie prop.

For those Star Wars fans in the Houston area, there is a Clone Wars screening Sunday night at Space Center Houston (aka NASA).
All proceeds go to Ronald McDonald House Charities. Check it out here (
[www.spacecenter.org])
There will be Clone Wars poster for auction there signed by George Lucas, among other items. Again, all proceeds go
to charity.

Buy the plastic model, that is at least closer to the studio model in dimensions than this thing, and go from there.

Guys, the whole mis-used parsec unit was on purpose! Answers.com seems
to be full of it.
From the script: [www.blueharvest.net]
HAN: Fast ship? You've never heard of the Millennium Falcon?
BEN: Should I have?
HAN: It's the ship that made the Kessel run in less than twelve
parsecs!
Ben reacts to Solo's stupid attempt to impress them with
obvious misinformation.

I could easily build a model. This is meant to be played with and henceforth is made with durability in mind.

Hi everyone, I am the guy who made this.
Thanks for all the comments critique and supportive.
I will definitely use them on my next project. :)
I just want to remind you that this is supposed to be a toy and not a model. I think of it as an enhanced toy.
It is pretty durable, clear coated with matte finish paint to protect it and not meant to be exactly accurate.
I used the smaller battle pack figures because believe it or not they are actually closer to the right scale. The full size figures that came with it can't even fit through the doors haha.
As far as the extra residue of the ink wash goes, I could easily have removed it with a pencil eraser once it dried but I actually like the grimy look of it so i am going to keep it how it is. :)
