Mini Corvette Engine Runs at 11,000 RPM
Posted by Sean Fallon at 10:50 AM on August 16, 2008
It may not sound much different that a weed-whacker, but I can assure you that if this 1/6 scale replica of the 1964 Corvette L76 327 cubic-inch V8 was put into a tiny car, it would give a Leprechaun the ride of its life. The mini four-stroke engine was fabricated from scratch by a guy named Jim Moyer, and it can hit a staggering 11,000 RPM when opened up. Impressive.

@shenanigans61: Agreed. That video was a total letdown. I wanted to hear 11,000 RPM from that little thing..
@dorylomorphs: Been wondering myself. Anyone know why?

I love this mini-engine trend in the hobby world. Can't wait until they start making the cars also.

That IS amazing! I think I'd probably swear off all drugs if I saw a Leprechaun whizzing by in a a tiny Corvette....imagine it: You're laid back, chillin on your porch like you do in yo hood, fawdy in hand, Backwood blunt full of endo in the other, and Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You'd mst likely have to just say "Ok that never happened. But I gots to lay off them Backwoods, Babeh!"

@RoboChop: Not really a trend. It's been going on for a very long time. Also, people have been "making the cars" also.

Um this has been done countless times. Theres MANY of these engines out there. Some even have working superchargers. One guy hand built a small Ferrari that was fully working. Took him years, somewhere around 10 I believe.

I love it when grown men try to act cool about cars and make total tards of themselves.

I'd lay money on it using glow plugs like the nitro R/C engines use. Theres several places making these tiny cams and misc engine parts. It's really a niche market thats starting to grow. Still a majority of it is done by some guy in his home shop with a bridgeport and a lot of time. lol

What did he use for spark plugs? And how would one grind a camshaft that small? I would really like to see the inner workings of this engine.

11,000 rpm isn't quite staggering. Generally the length of stroke dictates the maximum rpm and I imagine it's rather short on this thing. 11,000 rpm is still well inside motorcycle territory.

True, but take into account the valve control needed at those rpm's. Even with such lightweight valvetrain componets, it's still pretty amazing.

nono needs to go a in a Miniature Corvette...the kittyvette! Complete with kitty restraint/harness so your feline friend can have a ferocious time. Built in fecal failure trap door included!
But seeing as I'm a pilot at heart, it would have to go in a flying wing shape with a ducted chrome propfan. With diligent quantities of shiny 6AL4V. And then I would shred birds with it, especially ducks.
