Microsoft's Seinfeld Ads May Include Colbert, McConaughey and the Late Bernie Mac
Posted by Sean Fallon at 7:30 AM on August 22, 2008
Earlier today we learned that Microsoft is planning a US$300 million advertising campaign starring Jerry Seinfeld in an attempt to counter the success that Apple has had with their PC vs Mac ads. However, according to FBLA, Microsoft may not stop with Seinfeld. Rumour has it that stars like Sarah Silverman, Willie Nelson, Travis Pastrana, Matthew McConaughey, Ralph Nader, Rob Corddry, Stephen Colbert and even the late Bernie Mac might also make an appearance. Again, it's just a rumour, but this approach worked for the Bill Gates retirement video didn't it? [FBLA via Gawker]

There's an obvious comedian Microsoft should have used ... http://notnews.today.com/2008/08/21/30/

Colbert didn't want to be killed from Apple's kill switch, so he switched to have a zune that can't kill him.... or do anything else!

@whatnot22: Just because you have trouble operating Vista, doesn't mean its a disaster for everybody... I've been using since launch and the only problems I've had are ones that I know I've caused... (tweaking & tinkering...)

God I hate those Mac ads. They're a shining example of selling a brand on ignorance alone. They never told anyone anything useful about either OS. Just like the iPod commercials. Though, not like the iPhone commercials. They just lie in those.
I've got nothing against the products themselves (except the iPod), but their marketing schemes are awful. So I hope Microsoft at least has the decency to make a useful ad rather than a airwave pollution and cult management. I have my doubts.

Do kids these days even know who Jerry Seinfeld is? I used to watch him, but he's not going to entice me to buy that disaster of an OS called VISTA. Sorry Microsoft, you should put the $300 million into fixing the product, not trying to convince us it's worth a shit.

in unrelated news, apple announced today the end of the "hi, Im a mac" campaign, a new one having 75 artists and 200 songwriters shot in b/w (gap style) showing why they like their old imacpodminibook, the budget was not revealed but a trustworthy source with goatee that works for the NYT calculates will cost 1 billion and will be paid in cash.

Why the hell is MS advertising? As a shareholder I'm kinda pissed. They know they have a captive audience, it's like advertising prison to people who are already in one.

Um, Bernie Mac? Sorry, if they include him, they will likely get no positive reception whatsoever. However, G4 seems to have a rather nice take on the subject.

Why Seifeld when Jason Alexander (George) would be a perfect spokesman for Vista.
From wikipedia:
"George Costanza (Jason Alexander) ... He is cheap, dishonest, petty and often jealous of others' achievements. He is often portrayed as a loser who is insecure about his capabilities. He often complains and lies about his profession, relationship, and almost everything else, which usually creates trouble for him later. ... Despite these shortcomings, or perhaps because of them, George has managed to repeatedly achieve considerable success in his life, ... However, his aforementioned problems unfortunately tend to make these situations short-lived. ... He often does questionable things which others might also do but often gets caught in the act ..."

I enjoyed seeing a Mac on Seinfeld's desk in his apartment on the show, they kept updating the it when new Macs were introduced, I guess Seinfeld is more of a comedian than being computer literate, it must of been the set designers idea to put a Mac on the set. Now he's on the dark side.

This will go down as Crispin Porter's biggest debacle! MS is famous for being a horrible client. It's huge account but also making a deal with the devil.
Still, they're bound to do a better job than Publicis would have.

I can't see Colbert doing it, or any celebrity cool among 18-20-somethings doing these ads because they risk seeming uncool by the 18-20-somethings that thought of them as cool to begin with.
The ad will probably go something like this: Jerry Seinfeld and Gates are in front of a screen and say how MS was gonna spend $300 million to market Vista but instead they're giving him (Seinfeld) $10 million and the rest is being used to improve Vista. Because MS cares etc etc. self depreciating humor, end of ad.

@MrHaroHaro: Yes because the 20 somethings like "the flying tomato" wouldn't dream of doing a commercial for something that uses Vista.....
Oh wait...........
HP anyone?
Same for Seinfeld, he's done one already as well.
going from an HP using Vista commercial to a Microsoft Vista commercial isn't much of a stretch at all......
and that whole Bee Movie thing brought Seinfeld to a whole new group of people....

Trying to make us believe Vista is good with the use of stars most people don't think about probably is a good way to fail. They need to find a person that they can make into a star. Someone lovable with a good face. Bombarding us with semi-stars is probably going to make things worse.

"Hi, I'm a "hip" younger gentleman who will be portraying a Mac today. I dress in a casual manner to show you that I am in touch with the youth of today, and my rolled up sleeves on my button down shirt -- which is untucked -- proves this."
"Hello, I am an older gentleman who will portray a PC running the Window's Vista Operating System. I am wearing a tie and sport coat to imply that I am out of touch with what is going on in the world, and that I have little style sense. I do not know much about Apple's iPodPhone, but I do know that I am disorganized and prone to crashing -- without adequate hardware."
I hate those fucking Mac commercials.

not only did seinfeld use a mac on the show, he ad the 20th anniversary mac which was like 6 grand back in the day. I think there was one episode where the scene cut to him at the desk but yeah, he didn't really use it.

Also: I hate Jerry Seinfeld. I love Seinfeld, but the man is a Douche.
Another also: Does anyone really like those I'm A Mac ads? Thankfully we don't get many / any aired where I live, so I can bury my head in the sand and pretend Sir Jobs never gave them the go-ahead. But really... they make me want to not be a mac user.
If MS can produce a celeb endorsement with some class and genuine humour they can at least win with the least patronising, offensive ad.
