Microsoft Confirms 'Porn Mode' For IE 8, Calls it 'InPrivate' (Still Sounds Dirty)
Posted by Sean Fallon at 8:10 AM on August 28, 2008
Microsoft has confirmed the rumour floating around last week that IE 8 would get its own "porn mode"—or "private browsing mode" if you insist on being mature about it. Amusingly enough, they have dubbed their service InPrivate, which sounds even filthier if you ask me. [IE Blog via The Register via BGR]

@Mio: Thanks a lot for the clarification. That would come in handy for stuff like online banking as well. I've seen the option in safari, but never really cared to use it.

@OMG! Ponies!: Blink still works (sadly) in Firefox 3 here.
Also, I just installed IE8B2. It's actually really really nice. A leap ahead of other IE versions, for sure.

@rndmideas: It never records it in the first place. Something like shadow volume copy might make a shadow copy of your history before you clear it.
Also, it has a number of clever anti-tracking cookie tricks, and per-site settings up its sleeve, which people seem to be ignoring, just so that they can yell "SAFARI ALREADY DOES IT!".

@Bokusatsu_Tenshi: "Somehow, I can't push myself to believe that a Microsoft product won't keep ANY records on what you're doing."
... which may explain why internally MS used the term "InAccurate" to describe the InPrivate feature during its development.

In a world of digital camera sex tapes, amateur webcam porn, myspace, facebook, flickr, personal blogging, and Benny's [edited.....], it's almost amazing that anyone keeps anything private enough anymore for this to even be relevant as a "technological innovation"
It feels like WebTV was for my parents in the 90's. Technology meant to keep old us folks happy and comfortable with the future, while the young folks have moved beyond the need for it before it even arrived.

@ten10:
As to IE8, it's a bit slower than IE7 and slower than Firefox 3 with a full set of the top extensions. I noticed this after only five minutes of use. I can't speak to crashiness as I've never experienced either a crash of Vista or a crash of IE7 under Vista.
If they can fix the speed issue, IE8 may be able to compete with Firefox. Which is Microsoft's (and Apple's) modus operandi: See what the other guy is doing right and integrate it while throwing in some new features here and there. Firefox brought tabs to the browser; Safari has Private Browsing; Microsoft had the Tab Gallery.
Before people start the piss parade, IE8 IS BETA. Microsoft isn't passing it off as anything but that. It's not beta in "Google Mail" sense of beta; it's not a release candidate. It's beta software. And it doesn't rely on sneak-installs either.

I think IE8 so far is pretty awesome. It didn't exactly come with so many whizbang features to pull over FF3 users, but I think it's good.
There's some pretty slick stuff like Accelerators (formerly Activities) and WebSlices. Not to mention the more deeply enhanced security and performance stuff. IE8 is a pretty good try, if you're using Windows Vista.
I still hope for maybe another feature before launch.

Someone should make a FF extension that randomly ADDS traces of pornsite visits, fake cookies and inserted history, that way any evidence becomes null and void and you can contest any business firing you etcetera.

I find it funny that so many people seem to have no idea the blink tag exists. Way back when I started learning how to do webpages (1994), the blink tag was openly hated by my friends. One of them posted this weird 3 paragraph rant on his webpage about how much he hated it.
Anyway, privacy mode seems interesting, I douubt I'd use it. Anyone who has access to my computer knows there's porn everywhere.

It's lame to have to make up excuses why privacy is important. It really is no one's business what you do on your computer. I stress the word your here because a work PC is somewhat different.
Further software like this already exists in at least three places that I know of. Each one of the products below protects people's privacy and goes beyond what IE 8 will offer. HeatSeek is purely designed for Porn. Safari is a full featured browser. PrivacyView has both privacy software and an anonymous proxy.
1. Safari by Apple
2. Anonymous Surfing by PrivacyView
3. Porn Browser by HeatSeek
Even if people are surfing for porn with the new IE 8, do we really think they weren't doing it before?
