@DeusExMach: Speaking as someone with experience (I lost my last girlfriend to suicide in June) I was thankful that it didn't happen at my house and especially that I did not witness the act. I can't even imagine how much more traumatized I would be if that had happened (though I am still pretty messed up as it is right now) so my heart definitely goes out for the girl.

It affects how the mind processes information, it affects metabolism, sensitivity to pain, and a host of other things. Depressed people simply don't live in the same world as the rest of us. The same goes for all kinds of other psychopathology, like bipolar or schizophrenia. Would you call someone weak for having paranoid delusions and hallucinations stemming from brain chemistry defects? These symptoms can lead to some extreme behavior, including harming self and others. But we can't hold them personally accountable for their behavior while under the effects of their disorder. If one has full control over one's actions, that's one thing, but even today, too many people want to dismiss mental illness as a deficiency of character...which I liken to someone saying color blindness is a character flaw...and if you had backbone, you really could see those colors.

Does this mean that every suicide should be held blameless? No, obviously not. Some people who kill themselves aren't beset by a mental illness that interferes with their ability to function reasonably. That's why you have to take each case individually...hence the lack of a true black and white, which implies an all or nothing rubric. One size does not fit all.

I am soo shocked that this is even on this site. I know that I shouldn't be reading stuff like this but I can't help it, I loved Brent and he's not here to defend himself. Let me start by telling by saying a little about Brent, he was a former CDF firefighter, he ran into many a fire without looking back, to save lives, a coward he was not. He even wanted to join the military to support and protect his friends that were there. I stopped him from doing this but the point is that he was a loyal friend and was willing to do anything in his power to save his loved ones and any he could from pain. How many of you can say that you did so much? Look Brent saved lives, that was his profession, not because he was some suicidal psycho but because he was a great guy with a heart of gold. And for all of those people that feel it necessary to pity me for what I saw, which by the way, wasn't AFK at all. What I saw was someone who for one small moment of an outstanding life lost touch of reality, what I saw wasn't the Brent we all knew and loved, it was someone who had no grasp on reality, just for long enough to make one bad decision. There was no reason, this wasn't planned to hurt anyone and I called the cops and did everything in my power to stop it but it was all very fast. I have no regrets and know that for the short amount of time it took him to do this, he was ill and that's not cowardice people, it sucks but some of have weak and dark moments where we can't see beyond what we feel and he was beyond himself at that point. I am not traumatized or ruined my only pain comes from the lack of my best friend in my life and that sucks but all those that loved Brent are getting through this time together, his family, my family and myself have become closer than we ever thought possible. So before you think of accounting blame to anyone, or saying something stupid, like "where's the you-tube video" try to have some decency and be humble enough to acknowledge the fact that you are ignorant to the many circumstances that led to this and that there are many people out there trying to defend this outstanding guy just like he defended us a billion times over.

ok all i have to say is NONE of you personally know brent or lyn (the ex girlfriend) well, i do. she did everything she could to make him stop what was going on. she is the one (tons of miles away) that made the call to the police, she is is one that stayed on the webcam for over an hour trying to talk him out of doing what he did. none of you know the dynamics of their relationship and who (if anyone) was to blame. i just dont understand how so many people can make assumptions on him or her when you dont even know them! this is such a sad event, nobody is even talking about the effects it will have on her, his fam etc. and btw the comments about 'when is it on youtube?' 'where is the videofeed?' grow up people! if this were to happen to someone in your family you wouldnt say such stupid things! people always have such ridiculous comments on things they know nothing about.
