Mac minis Turned Into Other Fetish Boxes People Drool Over
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 10:30 AM on August 23, 2008
Apple might neglect the Mac mini more than apparently hipsters do showers in mid-August, but some people love it enough to lavish it with the attention no one else does. Hideo Takano is one of those people, transforming the little fetish block into other boxes people obsess over: an over-sized Lego block for Apple-loving manboys to dream of building a Mac minizord, and a cute little gas can for pyromaniacs. Or simply other Macs--like a Quadra or a Mac Pro. We really love the bright red gas can:
Do check out the rest of his roundup at Mac Mod Lab. The Pro envy feels a played out, though an actual Pro stuffed into a mini would be worthy of wankage. [Mac Mod Lab via Technabob]

the quadra looks sweet but how cool would it be to have a gas can on your desk just to trip people out?

The Quadra one is tops. So neat to see the old logo again after a few years of colorless Apple stuff.

Notice the keyboard (and possibly the monitor, I can't tell) changing from the Lego one to the Quadra one. The Quadra keyboard is equally old school. Pretty slick.

Calling Lindsay in 3, 2, 1......
I would love to have that gas can "Mini". The Lego one takes the prize.
I never saw an ugly thing in my life: for let the form of an object be what it may - light, shade, and perspective will always make it beautiful. (Sans Star Jones)

adorable.
@TheDustball: yes, I love the quadra one too, after spending so many hours in front of one when I was teenager, this brings good dial up porn memories.
YIKES, that keyboard looks like post nuclear Chernobyl workstation.

I really think Apple's new look sucks. I wish they'd bring back the beige boxes. That Quadra Mod almost makes me want to use a Mac. Ditch Aqua for System 7/8 looks and you've sold me.

You know, the Mac Mini is one of the more overlooked pieces of equipment out there. Good to see them being modded.

I love the Quadra one. as previously stated, i miss the colorful apple logo. Found two belt buckles the other day on ebay, the colorful one and the silver one. didnt buy either (no money) but i totally wouldve picked the colorful one. Its totally worth being called gay by every ignorant fool that I come across.

Yeah, I had to read that first sentence about three times before I got it. Not good. But whatever, it happens to all of us.
Could re-write it like this:
"Apple may neglect the Mac mini like hipsters neglect deodorant, but some people lavish it with more attention than it deserves." Or something like that.
Again, it's Friday. I will admit to writing some truly horrible first sentences when I worked for a small daily newspaper. Especially on Fridays.
So, okay, I would like the LEGO brick.

Judging by the thickness of the unit, that would actually be a stack of two 2x2 LEGO plates, not a full-out LEGO brick. And worse, it would be a cheap clone brand, since the studs don't proudly identify it as being LEGO-branded.

Nice! "Lego Mac Mini" (kinda rolls off the tongue) in the kid's room, the "Mac Fuelie" could replace the Pismo in my garage and the "Quadra" is very cool.

If I can stack the Lego ones, I'll take two.
If I can't, I'll just take one, and I want it to look like a tiny ImageWriter. If he can't pull that off I'll settle for a 5.25" floppy drive.

I think you mean "hippies" and not "hipsters." Hipsters shower more than an olympic diving athlete. Hippies, on the other hand...

@strobefx:
Ah, but do you have the relevent knowledge to have actually wondered for a brief moment if that was actually a TYCO plate, due to the thickness? I don't own any myself, but one of my fellow LUG-members does, and I have to say that, before they were forced to stop producing their line of bricks, they had a few parts that I wouldn't mind seeing produced for the LEGO line in some form or another. Specifically, they had a piece that's like the top of two 2x2 plates stuck back to back, so essentially have a plate with studs on top and bottom. To go with it, they had another piece that was like the bottoms of two 2x2 plates, and could attach to studs from both sides. The two pieces together would just form a basic 2x2 brick, but they would also be very useful for SNOT construction techniques, as there aren't many LEGO parts that can produce the same effect without requiring a fairly substantial gap between the two parts you want to connect.
Oh, and the reason I was wondering if that would actually be a TYCO plate is because, while their bricks were the same height as LEGO bricks, two plates would stack as tall as a brick, where with LEGO plates you'd need three. Now, there are definitely some curious advantages to the 1:3 ratio in the LEGO line, the oddest of which is the ability to grip the edge of a plate or tile between two adjacent rows of studs.

Look Jobs et al. People are still interested in mac minis. Now go be good apples at refresh the line FFS, it just isn't cool trying to sell year old technology at the current mini prices.

Fro the looks of some of these, they're mass-manufactured slip-on covers... Someone needs to get onto the worldwide distribution of these!

@AHemp: Hence the phrase. "Dirty hippies"? That, or I may have just watched too much South Park, I can't tell.
As much of a LEGO fiend as I am, I still love that gas can most of all. It just looks too perfect. I want one.
