Logitech MX 1100 Mouse Review (Verdict: Our Favourite Mouse Ever)
Posted by Jason Chen at 2:00 AM on August 23, 2008
The Gadget: Logitech's MX 1100 cordless laser mouse, which is a combination of the MX1000 (which we've used for years) and the slightly newer MX Revolution. It's wireless, which is great for most everyone, and contoured to your hand for extra comfort. There's also an on-board DPI toggle for sensitivity and the ability to switch between regular scrolling and super speedy scrolling.
The Price: US$80
The Verdict: Our favourite mouse yet. The exterior is totally molded to fit your hand with very cozy grooves for the thumb, ring and pinkie. Like the MX Revolution, it's missing the fast scroll buttons found in the MX1000, but makes up for it with the fast scroll/regular scroll wheel toggle that lets you switch between standard scrolling and the super fast turbo spin that shoots through 10,000 lines of Excel in seven seconds. Then there are the other buttons.
The exterior DPI toggle can adjust sensitivity on the fly without opening up the control app and the "body" thumb button is good for whatever function (Exposé on Mac or Flip 3D on Vista) you want to assign. The forward and back thumb buttons are still there, and are still nice and soft, and the right and left mouse clicks have just the perfect amount of feedback to balance out feeling solid, being quiet and feeling satisfying. It also solves the flaw Logitech mice have had the past few years where it's hard to middle click the scroll wheel because it would tilt to either side, activating the side scrolling.
The two questionable design decisions are its use of AA batteries, which means it's not natively rechargeable, and the fact that lefties will feel even more uncomfortable using this than with previous ergonomically-shaped mice. We're right handed, but a few of our friends (we call them leftovers) wish they could use these along with us. Maybe make a left-handed version with all the internal pieces mirrored, but only 1/20 the production count? As for the batteries, this might be better, since our experience with Logitech mice is that the contacts between it and the docking station always get worn out, which leads to an inability to charge after a few years.
If you're like us and can see past these very minor quirks, you'll definitely be happy picking one up for daily use. At US$80, it's not on the absolute highest side of the mice scale, plus it's actually still cheaper than the US$99 MX Revolution, so power users will definitely be happy using this for years;or at least until Logitech decides to refine their design even more. I personally don't like the big groove for your thumb that this and the revolution have. I prefer to hold the mouse with just the tips of my fingers and these "ergonomic" designs seem like they are more to rest your whole hand on the mouse which then requires you to move your whole arm almost to move the mouse.
As far as AA batteries go, i have to charge my mx1000 almost weekly now compared to monthly when it was new. My VX nano on the other hand lasts for 6 months or more on 2 AAA's.

What's the charging system look like?
The revolution has a nice feel to it, but there's no way that I'm going to put my mouse back on the charger when I get up. It's just not ever going to happen.
My G7 was great and had two removable batteries. But, like all Logitech products, it only lasted for short while.

I've had 3 different revolution-type mice from logitech. (yes, i'm a logi-whore.) Of them, the best for me has been the nano, which 1) hasn't broken like the frickin VX revolution, and 2) doesn't have annoying scroll issues like my MX revolution.
Mostly, the problem I had with the MX was that the scrolling would get bizarrely lagged in certain programs, most notably in OpenOffice. Really annoying that I couldn't, you know, scroll through my word/writer documents.
I thought it might be a software thing, but the Nano hasn't had any such issue, only the MX revolution. If the MX 1100 fixed that scrolling issue, I might be tempted to get it ^_^

Bah, if the Revolution and this monstrosity got in a cage fight.... well lets just say the Revolution would stab this wussy mouse like a dirty Taiwanese whore who didn't get paid.

I've been a Logitech mouse user forever. I have enough Logitech Mice to open a museum for them. Currently I use the MX1000 for my daily work desktop use and a custom painted G5 for my gaming rig. I also have a MX518 as my backup gaming mouse/travel mouse.
I agree with the issue with the MX1000 and the contacts for the rechargeable batteries. I have to get it on the cradle just right. Had the same problem with the MX700 before that. The good news is the rechargeable batteries last almost a week so I only have to get it to sit just right once a week. :)
As for rechargeable AAs, I got so many of those between my sons toys, Cannon camera, etc that I always have some fully charged, so that's not an issue.

It sounds like a good mouse, i loved my MX1000 till it half way died a couple months back. It took a lot of searching for one still in stock but i picked up a G7, Logitech's only 'gamer' brand wireless mouse. It used variable dpi, more packet sending (so that it has a lot less lag), and rechargeable battery packs.
It's been simply the best wireless mouse i have ever used. I'm glad to see some of it's designs finally incorporated into new wireless mice as that means they might be working on a new gamer edition wireless mouse that can push the envelope again.

@takashimiike 3G edition: You can generally find some good deals to get them cheaper, but Logitech's mice are worth the price you pay.
It seems that although it's wireless it is not rechargeable and doesn't come with a dock, unless you by the Mouse & Keyboard bundle, so keep that in mind.

The MX Revolution is still selling for around that price point ($80ish from places like Amazon). The contact pad thing definitely sucks -- my first had the contact pads die and then the battery meter on the mouse kept screwing up. It would have a full charge and would a red battery icon. Logitech said the only thing to do was RMA the thing -- letting the thing die and then recharging it didn't work. I got two new ones the other day and they've changed the charger a bit, hopefully to address some of those issues.

I don't agree, I still think the revolution is a nicer mouse. The second scroll wheel on the Revolution is three additional functions for you to use (expose, spaces and dashboard for me) along with the rest of the buttons.
And 80 isn't much. When I got the MX, I do think it was well over 100.

I've used a revolution since Christmas. The MX1000 actually performs better, although the revolution feels like it is made better. The problem with the Revolution is there are "pauses" every now and then as if the signal isn't being received. Very frustrating when gaming. And I've placed the dongle on my keyboard USB so it is only like 18 inches from the mouse, and it still didn't improve the issue.

@Saboth:
I doubt your problem is the distance from the receiver to the mouse. I have the revolution as well and its a good 3-4 feet (and desk) between them and I have no pause or lag issues. My guess is that the pause comes from it being plugged into the keyboard or a hub USB port. Try plugging the receiver into the back of the computer into one of the machines USB ports. With it in the keyboard, which is basically acting like a USB hub, the pauses are probably coming from the hub trying to send all of the data from all of the other devices plugged into it (if there are any), the keyboard, and the mouse through to the one port on the computer, and the switching between which device is primarily getting sent at the time (there's only so much bandwidth). The same thing can happen from any USB hub, and I've made the mistake before myself before I realized it.
The best advice, any device that you want to have a constant stream of data (mouse, keyboard, maybe webcam, speakers, etc) plug directly into a port on the machine. Stuff like iPod/iPhone connectors, external hard drives, printers, that only occationally might need a burst of data temporarily and slight pause isn't detremental, use a hub for.

@ara: Sorry about doubt post, just clarifying that my issue wasn't with side scrolling, it is the fact that the scroll has this mechanical "clutch" to swap between stepped and free scrolling, and clicking it feels horrible compared to microswitches. It's response is strange and half of the time it doesn't do anything unless you use force way beyond normal click.

I use it for my art and gaming and it's perfect. I've been thinking about a G5 but I also think if they made the MX1000 corded I'd buy it. Or maybe they have, I don't know. I have MX Revolution and must say that the scroll sucks ass. It's completely useless as middle button, and the pathetic drives won't allow you to map middle button to any other button on the damn thing. Thank god some 3rd party has hacked their drivers, but really, can't recommend any mouse with that scroll to anyone.

Got a picture of the underside? I've got a MX Revolution. One of the nicer mice I've used, but the sensor is in a stupid spot - the near the middle and a little to the left - pretty much between my thumb and forefinger.
They really should move it to right beneath the end of my forefinger. Would make mousing a lot easier.

They are dozens of very good corded mice avaible today (Steelseries Ikari, Logitech G5, MX518, G9, Razer Deathadder, to name just a few). But for a good, and i mean a GOOD cordless mice, you have to choose from a list of maybe five good wireless mice. Am I the only one who doesn't want his mouse to be cordless? I only use a mouse with my desktop computer, and I have zero problem keeping it plugged into my keyboard USB port. So why do I need to add more radio interference into the air and have another battery to charge, re-charge and eventually dispose of? I think that if it can use AA NiMH batteries like my Logitech Cordless Trackball then designing it to use AA batteries was the best way to go. People won't be tempted to discarding the unit when the internal batteries no longer hold a charge. It's easy to have a set of fully charged batteries at the ready. And a special/additional charger isn't needed which reduces cost and frees up an outlet.

The last 3 generations of Logitech cordless mice all have a slight lag, causing me to overshoot constantly when using Windows at high resolutions ie. 1920x1200. I gave up on cordless and migrated to the corded G9. I've been very happy since. Cordless mice suck for gaming and precision work at higher screen resolutions. The problem seems amplified when using Vista, which introduces even more lag than XP.

Also, i love it uses AA replaceable batteries. I don't get it why some people hate it. They do last longer and you can replace them when they wore out from too many charge cycles. Can you do the same with a non-replaceble li-ion battery, like in many mice, Revolution for example?

Ive had it for two years and have not had an issue with it, and the battery life is phenomenal. I think im on month 6. My experience with the mx revolution has been terrible. In the first 5 months, my mouse developed a major lag. 5 months and 5 days, it skipped so badly that i had to dig out the oem mouse. Logitech did send me another after i proved the warranty, but going through their forums, it seems the mx rev suffers from massive hardware failure. I will wait a year before i look into this mouse to see what problems it has. Im betting its going to have the same flawed components as the mx rev

I've owned a MX Revolution for a week now, and i'm quite happy with it, although i still cant map the second wheel click to Scale (Similar to expose, part of compiz) so i haven't really used it 100% yet.
I have to say, this article made me very uncomfortable regarding where i put my pinkie.
I would buy this one in a heart beat!

their hardware's good but the drivers are horrible. i just upgraded to the revolution from the mx700 which was awesome but finally crapped out. anyone know of some hacked drivers? i would just forgo the software altogether but i feel ripped off paying this much for a mouse and not using the thumb scroll and clutch

I've been happily using my MX1000 since soon after it was released. I've never had any issues with lag or gaming; I used to play Unreal Tournament 2004 for hours at a time and never noticed any problems with precision, lag, twitchiness, or anything else. Definitely a step up from my corded Intellimouse Explorer optical! I've been using the eraser trick on the contacts for years now (I first learned that with my Aurora slot cars in the 70s, about the same time I was building tanks, Corvettes, and F-15s with my Spinwelder), or just wipe them with a damp cloth just before putting on the charging cradle. This new MX1100 looks like the perfect replacement if my old 1000 dies soon, or maybe I'll take the 1000 to work since my mouse cord always gets caught on the edge of the desk there.
I have had issues using later editions of the Setpoint software, so I've gone back to the version that was on the included CD.
Recently my wife added a cordless desktop set to her PC, which is only about 6 feet from mine, and occasionally her mouse will interfere with mine. Moving my receiver closer to my mousepad (about 12") seems to have eliminated the interference issues though.

I've actually preferred the vx revolution to the mx revolution because of its less bulky size. This one looks like it's a good middle ground between the two though. Will definitely keep an eye on it.

oh my brother, testify!!!!!
g15 at home, g11 at work.
the boys at the monthly texas holdem tourney paid for my revolution (thanks guys!!)
the rev is hands down the best mouse i have used to date. and i have owned most of the different kinds of pointing devices. i like the document flip thumb wheel. and i set mine up so it free-spins all the time. i use the little button underneath it to clear out the cache data in firefox.
full of win!!!!

I got the MX Revolution when CompUSA was going out of business for $50
The only issue I had was I tended to tilt the mouse back in twitch gaming and it would switch out my weapons, because the fly wheel is so sensitive. I just had to change the way I moved the mouse.

C'mon.. make one that works via Bluetooth you bastiges! I have a Revolution and it has this damn lag ball dropped on it constantly while it wrestles with both the wireless connection in the house as well as the phones.
These mice are truly wonderful to hold but I had to go back to my old mice to alleviate myself from the freezes.

I don't see anything about gaming performance and I'm guessing this isn't geared towards it. I use a MX1000 for work but at I home I use my trusty mx500 for gaming.

so... how is this better than the MX Revolution?
I've been using a revolution for a couple years now and not only does it work really well, but it is also holding up really well. I felt a little spendy when I spent over 100 dollars on it, but I feel like it's paid off.
it has more features and seems more ergonomical than this mouse... maybe you had to be there?

Logitech FTW. The last 3 or 4 mice I have bought have all been Logitechs, and I couldn't be happier with them. They all still function as well now as they did they day I purchased them. I just follow the upgrade path every few years, the latest being the MX Revolution.
@ArrogantAce: Nice to know I'm not the only southpaw who uses a right-handed mouse, but it wasn't by force - it actually feels natural for some reason.

What I really want is a wired version of the MX Revolution or MX1100.

@Saboth: I experienced that drop-out as well, even when the dongle was obscenely close. A major flaw in the design, made gaming frustrating and made working in Photoshop or LightWave incredibly tedious at times.
The loss of the second scroll wheel makes it a do not want for me. I'm happy with my G9 right now, and the Nano I use for my laptop is probably my favorite mouse so far.
Nice mouse, pains me to see these though since I lost my Revolution =(

oh thank god. a quality wireless mouse with AA rechargeables. a proprietary battery just means 2 more annoyances:
1. more clutter on my desk- proprietary battery = proprietary charger.
2. non-replaceable (or at least, so damn inconvenient it might as well be non-replaceable). My MX1000's battery lasted over a day of continuous use when it was new. after 2 years i would be lucky to get 45 minutes on a single full charge. mouse was unusable, battery wasn't replaceable.
a single set of rechargeable AA's in your house instantly turns all products that use AA batteries into rechargeable devices. Wii remotes, TV remotes, computer mice...

I have this mouse and the keyboard that is supposed to go with it.
it is indeed, one of the greatest sets i have ever owned.
p.s. - sometimes i spin the wheel on the mouse as fast as i can and time it before it stops spinning.
*spins*
alright, i just got 15 seconds!

@FrankenPC: I'd prefer my Revolution but the coating on the non-thumb side of the mouse is coming off. After seeing this thing, I dunno about the MX1100. I really like the secondary scroll. I use it to go through tabs in firefox and apps in Vista.
Not giving that up.

I've had Logitech wireless mice for some time now, the MX700 I believe was followed by an MX1000, but I noticed one flaw, the mouse buttons will wear out in a way that makes the mouse double-click with one button press. I buy the Best Buy or Circuit City extended warranties, and wind up replacing or upgrading once a year.
I "upgraded" to a Microsoft Laser 8000 Bluetooth mouse a few weeks ago. Absolute garbage. Feels light and cheap, scroll wheel has no mass to it and is not indexed, and the charger takes up a lot of real estate.
In the market for a new mouse, but if it is Logitech, I'm not getting it without a warranty.

The Logitech VX Nano, which I use, is great for left-handers and has the features of this mouse while being cheaper and having the smallest USB receiver ever.

Wow that looks like a solid mouse, I would love to use that with my MacBook. For some reason I like using a mouse then mouse pad since its easier to right click then using command v every time I want to copy or paste.

While I agree with many that I don't like a cordless mouse in general (when the battery dies it's a pain) what I want is a different contour. You see on this mouse how there is a shelf that your thumb can rest on? Am I the only one out there who's pinky gets raw after awhile from dragging around on the desk and or mouse pad?
I want a mouse with a shelf on either side, one for my thumb and one for my pinky finger…

After dealing with Logitech's current software, I ran out and purchased several MX510 mice so I could keep the previous version. Ever since they came out with the tilt wheel, they have been a pile of crap. I want a corded mouse, with a wheel that is solid for middle clicking. I have my thumb button set to launch Windows Explorer, and boy is that handy. With the latest software, Logitech REMOVED the ability to launch Windows Explorer. I called tech support and they actually said the removed it because Microsoft told them to. WTF? They listened to their competitor? But this mouse gives me hope. I don't like cordless, but if I have to go that direction, AA batteries are the way to go (I can steal them from a flashlight in a jam). Good middle click - Good so far. But I'm wondering if the software is OK? Can I assign "My Computer" to a thumb button? As long as they get this fixed before I run out of MX510 mice, I'm good.

This is not a gaming mouse. Therefore I wouldn't have much use for it. I don't like wireless mice in general, but I guess for people, who use their computers for work, browsing, etc, this mouse would be pretty good.

I've read this review ([www.i4u.com]) and the author says it has lag, when he moves it slowly. :( IS THIS TRUE? I wanted this mouse for gaming on a media pc, but if it lags, than it really sucks. Damn. :(

@DG: "Shame the reviewer didn't say that you CAN charge the mouse (the batteries inside it) by just pluging it in a free USB port. And bonus, you can still use the mouse, as it charges, just like a corded mouse. ;)"
Ok, i'm quoting myself to correct something i've said: Only the MX1100 mouse in the Wave kit (K&M) has this feature. The standalone version of this mouse (that is reviewed here) doesn't have this option; you must remove the batteries completly to charge them. :(
