Lightning Review: Earforce X4 Xbox 360 Wireless Surround Sound Headset
Posted by Mark Wilson at 6:30 AM on August 21, 2008
The Gadget: Turtle Beach's Earforce X4. It's a wireless surround sound headset that can also plug into an Xbox 360 controller for full Live chatting.
The Price: US$200
The verdict: If you've got an extra US$200 and play Xbox 360 a lot, buy 'em.
It should be noted that these "surround sound" headphones are really transposing a 5.1 channel signal into two stereo speakers, but the results are excellent all the same. In Call of Duty 4, I could track a helicopter's proximity to me perfectly (with exception of just behind my head). And in Project Gotham Racing 4, cars whizzed by ears with aggressive speed.
As for the chatting, it's a complete pleasure in the X4s. Not only do both sides of the conversation benefit from improved audio clarity, but you hear your own voice mixed in with the game audio. This audio loop is to help keep you from shouting, and I think it works in practice. Plus, the mic's wire is supported by a pliable but durable metal skin--it feels 100x better than the stock 360 headset mic, like production-level gear.
Honestly, the sound quality isn't as good as you might find in dedicated surround sound headphones for the price. (My experience with the slightly more expensive Sony DS6000 blew these away.) And we'd really like the headphones to be rechargeable (an industry standard). But given that the sound is still quite decent, I never had a hiccup in the IR signal over hours of play, the ear cups are extremely comfortable and it's given me a manner to chat and use headphone surround sound (this is a VERY niche market of products), I'm quite pleased with the Earforce X4s and strongly recommend them to 360 gamers who need to keep the gunfire down while babies are sleeping, etc.

That headset is way to goofy looking to cost that much.

Great, kids were already to zombified to hear anything outside 360-land, now Mom's yelling can be drowned out mentally and physically!

Any recommendations on a headset that's better than the default? I'm currently using the one that comes with the chatpad. I don't need simulated 5.1 surround and all that. I just need to hear players yelling at me and I need them to clearly hear me yelling at them, "GTA MUTHA FUGGA!! Get outta my way!"

I have the X3's and I use em all the time to keep my neighbors from calling the cops (again). They are almost exactly like the X4's except $100 cheaper and stereo only.

I've been wanting these since I first saw them at Best Buy and Frys electronics. Could you guys track down all the different headsets for the 360 and do a comparison on them?, I mean these are nice and all but $200 nice? I don't know. SO please please please do a review on all available head sets :)

@From-My-Cube: heh, my wife makes fun of the UAV and "we're losing comrades" ALL the time. And she tells me how much I suck at the game. :(

I had been planning on getting these Tritton ones[www.newegg.com] , but I heard that the X4s were coming out and I thought I would wait until I read a review of them...
Whats the point of 5.1 when there's only 1 speaker in each ear?
The Tritton ones I liked to above are only $95, but they aren't wireless. So is wireless worth 2x the cost to you? (You're gonna be tied to your controller either way...)

I've actually been waiting for this review on here... I am asking my woman to get those for me this xmas...
I'm tempted to get the x3 but i like the idea of the surround sound...
How long do the batteries last and do rechargables work??

I purchased the Earforce X1's about 6 months ago in the bargain bin at my local Bestest Buy and love them. The cable that tethers you to the box and t.v. is extremely long and doesn't get in my way. The plus side to this is that I don't need to have a charged set of batteries lying around if the headphones were to die mid-game.

Yowzas....I'm not a fan of the wireless stuff. I personally have a pair of the EArforce X1's which work like a charm.

I use the [www.astrogaming.com] headset. It looks a lot more sturdy than these and comes with a amp and detachable mic.

I just use Sennheiser analog wireless headphones, and drape the Elite headset around my neck. Works fine, but looks silly as all get-out.
However, the "audio loop" feature of these headphones sounds like it would render them completely unusable for me. If I hear myself talking, it totally screws with my head. At least, so I've noticed, based on people who recirculate their headset audio back through their microphone - the extra lag just throws me off. I can't parallel process my own voice, evidently.

I have the x1's simply because I wanted to play late into the night without waking anyone and I feel that those are adequate. I wish I had got the wireless because the x1's work great for what they are but the wires are a nightmare.

@Beryllium: They don't echo your voice, they just loop it to your ears so it sounds like you don't have phones on.

I really need a pair of these X# headsets since I am now in college and I don't want to create too much noise with my 5.1 surround sound system at midnight. While X4 sounds great, that $200 price tag scares me away.

I got the X3's for the wireless, but returned them because I had a constant background hiss, like listening to a cassette tape.
Got the X1's instead, which have great audio, but messing with the long wire does get tedious, and I did like the X3's voice feedback feature a lot.
I'm curious if anyone else noticed the hiss effect on their X3 or X4s.

Just to throw a name out there. Check out the headphones from SteelSeries.com. They just aquired Ideazon. I've used their Siberia neckbands with the Xbox adapter. It's a lot of wires (one to the controller & one to the television). But they're easily the most comfortable headphones I've ever worn. Very comfortable cups, lightweight for the size, and great clarity. I play a lot of Halo with the MLG gametypes. Weapons spawn mid air, and I could hear the weapons drop on spawn. With the Xbox adapter they're $100. Only bitch with them is no mute button.

The only thing that sucks is those people who a) scream into the mic, b) sing and c) breathe heavily. With the great sound of these I'll probably go deaf very quickly by all these things. They look nice though.

I like the X1 also, I like the TB mic, and it's comfortable enough. It's a bit bass heavy, but being able to both hear chat and game audio in the headphone at the same time is worth it.
I ended up trying a Turtle Beach HPA2 5.1 for my PC and love it, I didn't think I was going to like the 5.1 headphones because I'd tried those Tritton 5.1s on the 360 previously and was underwhelmed, took it back to get the X1.

I got the X3's and I love 'em. I'd never play COD4 without them. It's always good to know where people are not just through sight, but sound too.

To clarify, Dolby Headphone "Technology" = Crap.
About as useful as DSP...

@Worf: Yeah, I've heard them, and they're crap...
I don't know what "cheapy headphones" you are talking about, the ones I linked to kick ass, I have a friend that has them and they are more 3D realistic that a pair of Sony $400 "surround sound" home theater headphones that I tried on at an expo a few years ago.
Love,

@bpapa9013: Actually, these headphones use Dolby Headphone technology, which is a way of taking surround sound and encoding it into two channels for proper headphones. Dolby Headphone works extremely well for reproducing the surround effects from a proper DD5.1 or DTS source.
Those cheapy "5.1" headphones that incorporate 3 drivers in each earcup are completely... useless. They offer no surround experience at all.

For multiplayer, shared console, will this alleviate the sound-source problem?

Oh, wait... Dolby Headphone "Technology" is nothing more than a specialized DSP filter.
ooooOOOOOOO I bet you love your Bose Acoustic Wave Music System too, don't ya...

I got the X3's since I play quite a bit at night while the wife and baby are sleeping. They are great for the late night gaming sessions. Not to mention drowning out the wife when I want to play.
