Lightning Review: Dr. Dre and Monster Headphones vs. a Jackhammer
Posted by Jason Chen at 6:00 AM on August 7, 2008
The Gadget: Dr. Dre and Monster's Beats headphones, which combines noise cancellation/isolation with an in-line microphone for mobile phones. Plus, you have Dre's expertise in knowing what sounds good, which makes for a good pair of cans.
The Price: US$350
The Verdict: Strong. The sound quality is pretty great, with good bass reproduction without being too heavy handed, and decent mediums and highs. Not the best all-around headset compared to Sennheisers, but pretty darn good. The Beats also ship with two headphone cables, one of which has an on-board microphone/toggle switch for taking and making calls. It performs this job quite admirably as well.
On the other hand, it might be because my head is too big or my ears stick out too much, but the Beats just barely fit on my head and grip my ears at its most extended. People with heads larger than me--there shouldn't be many of you out there--might want to try this on first before buying. The ear cups aren't extraordinarily comfortable, but they're wearable. Remember Dre's appearance at the VMA's last year? His head was pretty tiny on his buff body. Maybe that's why these are small.
But the most interesting feature is the noise cancellation. You have to have a pair of AAA batteries loaded in at all times, but the resulting isolation is more than enough to drown out an insanely annoying jackhammer that's been going at it outside my house for the past two weeks.
The Beats may not be the best at noise cancellation, the best at sound reproduction, or the best at making and taking calls, but it does all of the above well, and should be good enough for most people. [Beats]

Skull candy is overrated in my opinion. I use an in-ear pair for mowing the lawn, but honestly they quality sucks. They're not terribly comfortable, though it's just me.
Sennheiser, JVC, AKG, and the famous Grado's are excellent headphones.

@BrianEsser: Sound is good, but if you read reviews, durability is on occasion a problem (I know from experience).

my senn 580s cost less than $350 a few years back. now they're even cheaper, and i'm guessing they would still beat these cans head-to-head. why would i spend $350 on these?
dre must have gone to the Steve Jobs school of business.

I put these on a Best Buy recently. They felt pretty cheap and plastic and weren't the most comfortable on my ears. The sound quality wasn't overly impressive, but the bass was (of course) a bit on the heavy side. Plus, they didn't list a price anywhere, so I assumed they were expensive...just not THAT expensive, geez.
Then again, I've been using (and loving) the same pair of Sony MDR-V600's for the past 6+ years, so feel free to turn your nose up at me. Thanks in advance.

@evangelistc01: I hated the Smokin' Buds. Could not get those to stay in my ears at all. I got a pair of FMJ 9's from Skullcandy when I sent them a letter expressing my dissatisfaction. They stayed put, but were too bass-heavy. Got those replaced under warranty when the jack developed a short. They sent the FMJ 11's, which are much better sounding buds.

I wonder how these compare to the Bose QC2's? They're $50 less and they come with the Bose warranty and service (which you'll need because the brackets on them tend to break fairly easily).

I actually went out to get a new pair of headphones yesterday. I saw these sitting in Best Buy and even though I had no intention of buying them no matter how good they sounded, I gave them a listen and frankly thought they sounded pretty bad. I'm pretty sure it was probably due to Best Buy's poor setup, but who knows.
Bought a pair of Sennheiser HD212Pro's instead.

Eh.. I'll stick with my Westone UM2's and Senn. HD280's. I ignored these because the "Dr. Dre" said one thing to me, overemphasized bass. I prefer a more neutral or balanced sound signature for Rock, Jazz, Blues, and female vocals.

Listen, I'm a professional sound designer and recordist. If you want really good sounding headphones that will last forever and don't cost a lot, go do yourself a favor and buy a pair of Sony 7506's. They're about $100 each online and I own 2- one for work and one for pleasure. They're the industry standard for studios, field recording for tv and film, concert engineering, etc... You name it, they're there. Seriously, take a look behind the mixer the next time you're out at a show or see a shot of a recording studio on tv. 9 out of 10 times, these are the cans you'll see. Why spend more on marketing hype (cough, bose, cough, monster)?

$350 is a lot or money for headphones that "aren't the best" but "do well". You could get a pretty high end pair of cans from Grado Labs or Sennheiser for that price.
Also, anyone recommending SkullCandy knows nothing about headphones or music, and has been suckered by the fact that they look OH SO COOL on the outside. There, I said it.

I like my Bose (2nd gen) N/C and also my Sony's
The bose were a bit of coin but i needed them while i was in taipei. Normally i cannot stand Bose products but since they are good at small speakers (really thats all poor Amar ever was good at) they actually work pretty good. The N/C is excellent. The Sonys were about $200 cheaper but the N/C has one major problem if you move your jaw or cover one ear phone they make a strange sound. Dont ask model...they are over the ear with a button to kill the audio and allow outside sound. (which is a cool feature for when the flight attendant wants to know if i want the stuffed fish gut for dinner :( )
