Lexus Nuaero Concept is Straight Out of Starship Troopers
Posted by Jack Loftus at 11:00 AM on August 18, 2008
Does one reach for a camera or a can of RAID when the Lexus Nuaero concept pulls into the driveway? Sure Jon Rådbrink's design looks incredibly cool, fast and futuristic; but then again I've also spent the last few minutes looking over my shoulder to see if Sigourney Weaver was about to burst from the wall in a load lifter to do battle with it in my office. As it turns out, there's a lot more to this design than just looks, and Rådbrink believes the car's "low weight and large presence" will be the way premium cars could be manufactured in the future. Oh, and it's loaded with tech, too.
To drive this catamaran-inspired luxury car, the driver would use a drive-by-wire steering pad and a completely customisable multi-point touch screen. Rådbrink contends that our hands are far more accurate for driving than our feet, so he's eliminated pedals. Everything is controlled via the steering wheel. "Since the car is powered by electrical motors [found in each of the four wheels]," Rådbrink says, "there is no transmission and you break intuitively by pushing the steering wheel away from your body."
The kicker is that this 4.4m car is designed with lightweight materials meant to increase mileage and efficiency. How light is light? Try roughly the same weight as the diminutive SMART car. "I believe that this design paradox of low weight and large presence could be the way we'll define premium in the future," Rådbrink said. Just don't forget the futuristic airbags if this ever makes it into production. [Jon Rådbrink via DZEEN]

Actually, based on the design of the forked front-end, this car looks a lot more like the spinners from Blade Runner.

I like the bumper. Should eliminate a lot of the uncertainty surrounding hit and runs and whether or not there are witnesses.

By the looks of it, it really looks unique and has an interesting design, but it doesn't look safe. There are no side mirrors, making it very dangerous when switching to another lane. I doubt this car will ever go past just being a concept.

No pedals? Everything controlled via the steering wheel? Gah! How are supposed to smoke, drink, use the cell phone, and text all at the same time if both hands have to be on the steering wheel?
Next thing you know they'll have some sort of heads-up display thingamajig that requires us to keep our eyes on the road too...

HAHA, also.. i love how they've gone completely the opposite direction towards current headlamp technology, you know.. peeking your lights round the corner as you steer.. thie thing has to lights that seem to point inward!
Unless the left one shows the RIGHT side of the road, and the right one shows the LEFT..
What jackass came up with that one..?

@stonedbeyondthepoint: Lexus has already done a number of concepts with tiny cameras on the side of the car instead of mirrors...
asymmetrical wheels like that could still pose some safety/driveability issues, though...

There's much wrong with this design, that you have to wonder how anyone paid this person to design it... though there is much right with it. BTW those rims, horrible horrible idea, they are very unbalanced its going to be like riding down railroad tracks.

i'm taftsearlobe33. it seems like a rather random choice.
also is there no worry that as a result of the sides sticking up the way they do, wouldnt seriously cut off the drivbers vision to the point that he/she might not see the person in the other lane switching over to theirs?
we always have these designs and they never turn out to be true...why? seriously...why? not rhetorical. They concept cars are usually too inefficent, too costly, and just overall not right for people in general. but is there more to it than that? i dont know.
personally...i would've gone with the cylons as the reference. you can never go wrong with the cylons. also theres the added plus that i think the windsheild looks like alot like their eye cover thingies.

Oh, and it seems everyone has failed to mention what a RIDICULOUSLY large turning circle this thing must have..
If you look at the width of the wheel enclosures.. there is not enough room for the wheels to run inside of it.. meaning this thing will corner worse than an Hummer H2 limousine..
then again, the first picture indicates that the front wheels are extremely thin.. meaning that it CAN turn properly.. but at what cost?
I imagine the Ride would suffer horrifically..

You people just don't understand Nuaero and me. We're different from you and your gray little world of side view mirrors and balanced wheels and turning radiuses. We're in love, and we're running away to Reno to get married! I'm going to get a job as a taxi cab stand attendant, and Nuaero is going to be an investment banker's daily driver.
You want to know how we'll see behind us? Rear view cameras. You want to know how the wheels will be balanced? Thicker spindly parts and thinner broad parts. You want to know how the turning radius will work? Steering is assisted by the electric motors in each hub spinning at different rates. Are you happy now? We have no secrets!
Also, Nuaero is pregnant with my baby, and we're naming it "Emily" if it's a girl and "Gran Tourismo" if it's a boy!

It's actually the leaked photo of Batmobile from the next Batman. He needs a new car now that the Tumbler has blown up.
OR the new flying squad car from yet unannounced upcoming sequel of Blade Runner.
But DEFINITELY it has got NOTHING to do with Starship Troopers. Does it even feature a single car? I've seen it numerous times but can't remember seeing any four-wheelers in it.

Y'know, the more I look at it, the clearer it gets. It does look very much like a Batmobile, and as far as videos and comics go, like the ones before the Tumbler, but there's one specific one I can't help but note: the one Terry McGinnis pilots.

I hate the fact that here in the US if we ever get the real technology that Toyota (Lexus) develops for its passenger cars it is usually years after the Japanese have already played with it. The self parking thing on the LS and the Reversing Camera on the RX, those are all available on the cheaper Toyota models in Japan but not even the Avalon here has self parking, which for that non-Toyota price tag you would assume it would. It might have something to do with the huge inefficient Automotive Lobby in the US, with companies that produce gas guzzling, tech lacking boxes of steel making sure they don't have to update their production cars.

This car is crazy, and tbh with its design no matter how much tech is packed into that car i would like to see it drive over a speedbump (or sleeping policeman depends on where u from)
I know it would be all toned down before a production version is out .... but a speedbump would still kill that car

Massive repair costs in first day of driving! Just look at the front wheels, see all that body panel in front of the wheel almost down to the ground? Yeah, I'm betting it'll be at least $14,000 repair job from the first speedbump you encounter, if its a small one. Of course if you want to just drive it on private track that's totally flat (no speedbumps, potholes, or dirt-diving curbs) then I guess it won't be a problem. But then again, it's not really a car, just an expensive trophy... By the way, if you think you can avoid those kind of road issues in the real world, then I guess you also think your car runs on pixie dust... -- I may have a wandering mind, but it brings back presents. I don't have an evil twin, he wasn't evil enough...

Looks like the headlights are designed to be cross-eyed and shine on the opposite side to the light. The main design flaw I see is the aerodynamics. The car would generate to much lift and be at risk of flipping at high speed. The center body would need to be more like an upside down wing in order to work. It looks cool though...
