Lenovo's S9 and S10 Both Pass FCC Certification Just In Time
Posted by Matt Hickey at 12:00 PM on August 19, 2008
The lilliputian IdeaPads from Lenovo are coming, as we know, and now they're a little closer, having passed through the FCC's certification process. This is the final regulatory hurdle the IdeaPad S9 and S10 faced before going on sale in the US and comes just in time, as the duo of subnotebooks are expected to hit shelves next month. Also, any word on price? I know Lenovo traditionally doesn't compete with Dell in that regard but if they keep it under $500 it will be an interesting option.

Blast... now I'm torn. The mini Dell or the Mini Lenovo....
The lure of $299 is jut so damn strong... but after looking at specs of models for just a a little more I'm tempted to wait... but waiting sucks... so Gizmodo, how about a comparison for us. Sum up the netbook onslaught - model, features, cost.
My basic thought leading up to imminent purchase:
Dell, brand name, has proven implementation of Ubuntu into it's computers, and acceptable hardware. Lenovo, if the features really justify the cost difference, and if they carried over some quality engineering from their ThinkPad department... then does the quality and features of the Lenovo outweigh the features and price of the Dell? Or, is the rumored $299 for a quality netbook a number to good to pass up.

Yeah the competition has gotten stiff for me. I purposely skipped the Eee's because of the influx. Looks like the true battle is going to be between the twin titans lenovo and Dell. Sure MSi Wind is kewl, so is asus eee, mininote, etc, but non of the companies have the capacity or reach of Lenovo and Dell. These little monsters would fill MANY needs in an enterprise environment, and selling en masse is where the real money gets made.
If Dell manages to stick to its 299 entry price, lenovo will be forced to follow suit. Decisions decisions...The Dell E Slim also looks very sexy and weighs less than the macbook air...hmmm. Fun times for tech connesueirs.

i really doubt about the Dell 299$ price, but i can see it happening if they are willing to push many of these at new Economies, like India/Brazil/Russia, as the import taxes make all those subnotebooks still feel kinda expensive, people in Brazil cannot just shove 900$ for an EEE900 just to have some portable pc, although they are pushing lots of them, it just don't get to the medium-lower classes much, at least YET.
would be great, but still, i'm wainting for something with more balls, or at least, with a better chipset and onboard graphics. It would be great just to hang around with a subnotebook and my wacom.

But will it run OSX?
Actually, the competition is really the best argument for this iteration of the netbook concept. Just to set themselves apart, manufacturers have to come up with selling points for their machines.
The eeePc was the first of its kind, and although it's lacking in hardware, it has the userbase to support it. The eeePc also has the icon image going for it, even though Asus is doing all it can to muddle that image by churning out every kind of crap under the eee label.
The MSI Wind is a pretty decent machine, it runs OSX without much of a hassle, it's 10" for under €400, and it comes with an 80GB HDD. Whether that last point is a plus or not is really up to the consumer.
Acer has a nice, if technically mediocre contender in the arena. A lot of people like Acer for the reliability of their products. I haven't seen too many tests on the Aspire One, yet.
The Dell E, or Mini Inspirion, or whatever you wanna call it (make up your mind already!). Seems like a decent machine, if Dell keeps the price at the $299 point. Really, for the hardware you're getting (1GB RAM max, 4GB SSD), anymore would be too much. But it does have the Dell name, which carries a certain premium. I'm looking forward to see how it'll hold up.
Lenovo's contender: $370 for 8", or $399 for 10" with half a Gig of RAM and 80GB HDD, or $450 for 10" with double the RAM and HDD. Specs seem somewhat similar to the Dell (except the hard drive, of course), so that would be the main competition. Incidentally, at these prices, the Lenovo beats the air out of the Wind (although the Wind takes up to 2GB of RAM and, well, it can run OSX).
I say Battlemodo.

@drummr: Bad news. The basic S10 with half a Gig of RAM and the smaller HDD for $430?
It also says 2-3 weeks, which could just as well mean 2-3 months...

What happened to the 6-cell battery, 1gig RAM, 160G HDD, and the low start price?

on page 4 of the manual, there's a PC Express slot next to the headphone outs. Interesting, very interesting.
