Lenovo's Ideapad S10 Ultra-Portable Notebook PC Officially Due in September
Posted by Kit Eaton at 8:00 PM on August 4, 2008
Lenovo's gone official with details on its Ideapad S10 ultra-portable notebook: it'll come with Windows XP pre-installed, measure 25 x 18 cm, weigh just 1.08kg in its lightest configuration, and pack in a LED back-lit 10-inch screen. Powered by Intel Atom N270 and 945 GSE express chipset, the diminutive PC also has some advanced heat-dissipation tech so that your lap and wrists won't get overheated. Interestingly Lenovo notes that "In some countries there will be 9-inch versions," different colours and "Linux preloads"... but doesn't say if those systems will hit the US eventually. Initially then, the S10 will cost you either US$399 for a 512MB memory, 80GB HDD model or US$450 for a 1GB, 160GB HDD model, and comes in black red or white. Press release info below.
• Integrated 1.3M Camera
• 2 stereo speakers
• Multi-touch Pad & near full size Keyboard (85% full size)
• Integrated Wireless 802.11 b/g,10/100 Ethernet, Bluetooth
• Express card slot for WWAN expansion
• Up to 2-GB Memory
• 4in1 Multi-card Reader
• Form factor: 250.2 x 183 x 22-27.5mm, lightest configuration of 1.1 kg
• Large Panel 10.2" wide, LED backlight 1024x600 WSVGA
• Intel Integrated Graphics GMA 950
• Intel N270 CPU 1.6 GHz & Intel 945GSE Chipset
• Large HDD capacity 160G 9.5mm 2.5" SATA HDD (5400 rpm)
• Battery up to 3 hours with 3-cell battery, and up to 6 hours with 6-cell battery
The S10 also comes with a dedicated Lenovo graphical UI for best energy management options so you can optimise its battery life, and a "one-touch" rescue data recovery system. With Lenovo's might behind it, does it sound like an Eee PC killer? What do you think, chaps? [Lenovo]

It would be nice to see this item shown in Aussie dollars and where i can buy two of these Notebooks right NOW! in Australia?
because we are so far away from the USA we the consumers are at the mercy of some pen pushing dickheads who havent got a clue when it comes to buying new technology,If u think I'am angry, what about the tens of thousands of other customers in this country? For goodness sake we cant even buy duel deck American Audio Cdg 350 karaoke players because of some bloody half-wit who thinks he knows what people want in this country! No wonder we are so backwards when it comes to keeping up with technology!

@Metkis: Except I'd like it to be in full black instead of that lame checkerboard pattern :/

Why don't they style it after the Thinkpads?

You know for the extra $$ I could care less about SSD.
Also who puts down 2 stereo speakers as a benefit, aren't they a given?
I'm not really impressed with this model..

@Wegmans: Their X200 only has a single speaker.

Where is the trackpoint?
Get rid of the trackpad - it just takes up too much space - and make a bigger keyboard. Then I'm on board with lenovo.
Also, maybe consider a 6 cell battery as standard. That'd be nice.

I wish other netbooks would follow the HP's screen resolution. 600 pixel height feels so cramped.

Yup. Eee and Wind killer. Multi touch - woot! Perfect price point, if they can really do it.
Bring on the HUD and wearable peripherals!

DO NOT WANT. I just can't get over the 600 pixel height, either.

for all the people here whining about the trackpoint, this is an IDEAPAD not a Thinkpad.

More netbook unicorns.
First the Wind, then comes the Acer One(no word on that one), then the ECS joint just was never heard from again, then we have hopes and glimmers of the Dell-E/Inspirion Mini.
Can we get a definitve 'modo chart with release dates and specs so we can do a ultimate netbook battlemodo

I want my god damn Trackpoint and 9 cell battery.
Or an X200 for less than like $800.

The specs sound great, but... the eensy weensy teeny little problem is that Intel "expressly" forbids PCI-Express slots in machines with Atom processors (the other limitations include that you can't have more than one memory slot, and you have to use a Mini-ITX form factor). Bummer, BELIEVE me I know. I kinda doubt they would have forgotten to include ExpressCard slots in that prohibition. So, WTF?
But, if it is really true, I may have to cancel my pre-order for a 6-Cell Wind....
