Leaked Shot Of HTC Touch Diamond Shows CDMA Version Ate All the Pies
Posted by Kit Eaton at 10:15 PM on August 21, 2008
Over at BoyGeniusReports is this leaked shot of what's allegedly the CDMA version of HTC's fabby Touch Diamond mobile phone. And oh boy, oh boy... that's one phone that's not been on a diet: compared to the GSM version sitting on top of it it's one big ugly fat fellow. Apparently it's actually "more comfortable to hold," but you've got to wonder about the weight of the gizmo, and the tightness of your pockets. [Howardforums via BGR]

you are wrong. the phone that youy are saying is the cdma htc diamand is actually the htc touch pro with the full keybord and the gsm one is just the regular htc diamond.

I find it hard to believe these are the same phone model. Looking at all the pics at Howard Forums, they have completely different styling cues.

What's up with the design differences? It looks like the GSM has nice curves in the design and the CDMA version looks like a clunky Zune with all straight lines. The CDMA version is definitely not as "pretty".

if the CDMA version is slated for Verizon, i'm sure the extended battery will not compensate for them crippling the hardware. probably VZ navigator of some sorts!

@msisaac -
Nevermind. I just took another look at the full series of shots and saw the bottom of the fatter phone. I guess it's not the keyboard slider Touch Pro after all.

Is it really that much thicker or does the GSM one just have a curve to it? Like the Mac Air which it just as thick as some competitors but only in the middle.

Are you sure that's not the slide-out QWERTY keyboard version on the bottom? The Touch Pro with the slide-out keyboard was supposed to be thicker than the Diamond.

Eh, of course you won't state that the bigger back side is due to the cdma version has a 1340mah battery whereas the gsm version has a 900mah battery.
I'd take a phone that's a mm thicker if I can get great battery life, but maybe that's just me.

HTC's starting to drop a little junk in the trunk. Very nice!

The more CDMA images that get leaked, the more worried I become. I liked the design cues of the GSM version, but I will be getting one early from my carrier, which is CDMA. Although free, if its a fatty, I will be disappointed.

@xious: Yeah, the sharp angles and the slanted text on the back took me right back to 1983.

My manager up here in Canada just got a CDMA version and it's pretty fat. Fatter than I thought it would be...

So they are saying that bigger backsides feel better in the hands. I would have to agree, but let's not get carried away.

The angles shouldn't matter too much. I mean come on folks... who looks at their phone from the side?!?! Its more about how it feels over all when holding your phone. You dont buy a car because the undercarriage is ugly. Nobody really sees it. Im with TKWarrior... battery life over x.0mm is way more of a priority. If it's really that important then switch to a carrier that is GSM.

If it's like the iPhone and doesn't open up to a keyboard I might consider it. Does it have much HDD space? Why haven't these assholes given us more information? My contract is up in a couple weeks. Should I wait it out and maybe get this phone, or what?

Why not mention the beefier battery they added in, Eaton?

The back on the CDMA model IS different, because 1) they have indeed increased the battery size for the US CDMA version and needed a larger cover to hold that larger aforementioned battery and because 2) HTC wanted to ditch that horrible glossy "diamond" facade back cover found on the European and Asian market (they love shiny shit in Asia) GSM versions, that I'm sure most Americans wouldn't like (since it makes the phone harder to grip, is a finger print magnet, won't allow the phone to lay flat on a surface because of it's multi-triangled surface causing it to rock when laid flat, and because it had a tendency to loose it's finish rather quickly in certain areas) replacing it with a soft finnish square plastic back. It's a good thing for the American market if you're with either Sprint or Verizon, trust.

The phone on the bottom looks like the HTC Victor (basically a diamond in a different case) with the extended battery cover on.

@TKWarrior: Is it possible to use a 900mah battery for those times when you want to go "lite"? I'd prefer skinnier phone over longer life for my normal routine.

The fatty CDMA version looks just like my T-Mobile Shadow in that shot! (aka HTC Juno).

the cdma version looks like crap. What happened to the simple modern style? Now it looks like my 6700 :D Seriously here, this phone is sprint's last hope at keeping me a customer, give me my rectangle design back.

Ummm, there's nothing "leaked" or "spy" about this collection of photos. The CDMA version is available for purchase via Telus in Canada. http://www.telusmobility.com/bc/pcs/handset_htc_p3051.shtml

I would like to post the same thing I did on boy genius about the phones so people are clear on what they are and the differences. They are not leaked or spy shots. I took those photos the same evening I brought home my Telus Diamond. It is not the Raphael (pro) The battery is indeed 1340mah and does not last any longer then its gsm counter part at 900mah because ev-do rev a sucks that extra juice out pretty quickly. (I can only compare against the gsm edge as 3G north american bands were not available on my Asian Diamond so I would assume had hsdpa been used the gsm Diamond would die faster) The CDMA Diamond is 2mm thicker and trully does feel better in hand. The GSM version feels like it is built with a heavier material for the outside metal bevel (where HTC Innovation is etched) but the extra size of the CDMA version makes up the weight in its larger size. Pretty close overall. (in actual weight) And in addition to those comments I would like to say that the cdma version is more comfortable to hold not because the back is flat but actually because the phone is a bit fatter. I have seen the raphael and it is pretty much the same thickness as the tytn II. -- Sincerely Static.

People are crazy saying this phone is thick. It's 14mm thick (2.5mm more than GSM) to accommodate a bigger battery; a very good choice. It's the same thickness as the original HTC Touch and much smaller than the average HTC smartphone. Also in terms of stylings the CDMA version has smooth curves all around the front while the GSM version is basically a rectangle with all straight edges. If you think this is thick what are you going to say about the Touch Pro which is over 18mm thick and about the thickness of the average HTC smartphone.
