LEAKED: First Shots of iPhone Nike+ Interface
Posted by Mark Wilson at 2:39 AM on August 20, 2008
We've long known that Nike+ has been in development for the iPhone. Now we're finally getting a peek at the first shots of the interface. From what we can skim, Nike+ users will get all of the nifty performance graphs right on the phone (before this stuff was available on the web only). But the biggest improvement over the old Nike system may be Google Maps support:
We don't know just how robust the Nike+ maps support will be, but mapping routes directly on the iPhone could make for more organised training sessions. If only we had the coordination to use the iPhone's touch interface while running. Hell, if only we had the coordination to run. Hit the link for a lot more shots. [iPhone.fr via Ubergizmo]

I believe RGA is the firm behind the design / interface and functionality of this app.

seems they still need some of both, the pedometer for treadmills, indoor running.
Using the GPS would not only eliminate the need for the show, but let you use this to monitor other kids of exercise.
Could this be usable for biking? Or kayaking?

60km? That's a _lifetime_ of running.

I WANT THIS. STILL NEED FOOTPOD FOR TREADMILL RUNNING.
I could give up my nano for this. Finally.

@ARP: It would mean that Nike would lose sells on their special shoes that you need to be able to use it... so it will probably still use that little thing.

@TideGuy: With the built in accelerometer, it's not necessary even without the 3G GPS. You just have to attach the phone to your shoe.

@TideGuy: That's what I'm hoping for. The iPhone is a bit bulky to run with though.

@TideGuy: It will probably still be used to give you a more accurate reading since it counts every step you take, or for people that run indoors and couldn't get an accurate GPS signal.

@TideGuy: That's my thought. It would be really nice to be able to accurately track mileage rather than rely on a pedometer-type mechanism.

Do I need to buy a new Nike+iPhone kit and throw my old one for Nano in the closet? Not that it matters...App Store hates Canadians who won't trust Apple with their credit cards.

With 3G GPS I'm assuming the shoe pod wouldn't be necessary.

So you can search for the chip shop and the pub, and then run between them using GPS?

@stwf: If it can just operate on GPS, I would think so, as its simply tracking your distance.

DO NOT GO JOGGING WITH YOUR IPHONE. IT'S FRAGILE AND WILL BREAK.
Sorry about the all caps but Rule 1 of gadgetry is that gadgets are breakable. Take care of your stuff or it breaks. That means not jogging with an iPhone.
@budboyy2k: Apple has been a big FAILure when it comes to radio. You shouldn't have had to buy the radio remote because a radio should have been built in. Every other PMP manufacturer builds it in; Apple can too.

I'm still waiting for the damn iPod Radio Remote compatibility. Bought it with my 30GB Video and when I bought the touch I lost the radio!

On the surface, this sounds like a great idea, but it's not. Here's why: Apple's iPhone headsets are just not designed for use in sports. If you get even a single drop of sweat on the mic/click switch, it dies. For good. I know, I've gone through three headsets already. Another problem? Running with an iPhone causes static to build up on the headset cord. After about 20-25 minutes, this inevitably leads to the iPhone becoming unable to register that a headset is plugged in. The only remedy? A full restore. I know. It's happened to me three times.
I use Nike+ products, and I was originally hoping for Nike+ iPhone integration. But until Apple produces an optimized headset, it's a really, really bad idea.

@kpedraja: hmmm intersting. solid point, but you could just use a different pair of headphones. I use a sony loop around the ear type for running (although I don't run with iphone)
@OMG! Ponies!: good point. too expensive to be worth it

Of course this means you have to have your iPhone with you while running. I personally hate having to strap unnecessarily bulky (in this case) gadgets to my arms while I'm out for a long run. A nano (or even shuffle) is perfect for running.

@OMG! Ponies!:
"Every other PMP manufacturer builds it in; Apple can too"
Sure, they "can". They have owned 70% of the PMP market for how many years now? All without built in radios. Do you think adding a radio would add to that % significantly?

@OMG! Ponies!: The caps are ok, sometimes I have a hard time reading lower case. I don't even know what I'm writing right now! Gravelplate sausagehand, grudge uno tortilla!
I think it'll be ok as long as you dont drop it. I had no problems at all using an armband with my 30gb 5g, despite being cheap, silicone, and from ebay. The iphone armbands seem to be sturdier than the old ipod ones, even though hard drive based ipods weigh more.

iTrail does Google maps on the iPhone now and is only $2.99. It also exports to Google Documents so you can up load links for maps on Google Earth and Google Maps. Here is my Sunday run.

GPS on the iPhone really weak. You'll need to strap it to the top of your head on a non-cloudy day and only run in open spaces.

@kpedraja that's odd. I've been running w/my iPhone for 6 months w/o any of those problems. First the 2G, now the 3G. I use the Nike armband for iPod video to strap it to my arm and the included earbuds. Yeah, I sweat on the earbud cable, but I've never once experienced the problems you've cited.

After a solid year of waiting for this thing, I'm wondering if it'll work with the Amp+ watch. It'll be great for running but the idea of controlling the music on my iphone from my wrist is _very_ compelling
