Lamp Made Out of its Own Packaging
Posted by Mark Wilson at 9:50 AM on August 16, 2008
Reviewing gadgets on a normal basis, you really come to realise how incredible wasteful all the packaging is. Something is shipped to you in a box that's packed with styrofoam. Inside it, you find another box packed with more styrofoam and whatever good you ordered. But this Package Lamp is different. It has no extra packaging because it is the packaging.
An egg-cartony, paper pulp box, the container is shaped like a lamp and thereby becomes a lamp. It stores the necessary hardware safely inside. And when the lamp arrives at its destination, the bulb and other electrical materials can be repositioned in their more precarious (installed) positions.
Sure, you can't necessarily build every electronic in this manner. But I'm thinking a cardboard computer isn't out of the question. [Dezeen via Treehugger]

I could make a lamp out of my crap, that doesn't make it cool. besides, find me a shipping service for a lamp shaped box that isn't inside a standard box.

I think this is a good idea that was poorly executed. They should have hired an origami master to create a cube that transforms into an aesthetically pleasing lamp while still protecting the innards while in cube form.

Um Ikea has been selling better looking lamps that are packed in there shade for some time.
Weak sauce.

If you rub it, it turns into a chandelier.

@bucho54: If a origami master created that lamp how would the average person be able to fold it to the original design if people still struggle with flatpack stuff.

The whole idea of making a lampshade out of packaging is to save space. Its a concept i have worked with many times. But this appears that the lampshade isnt saving any real space. There still seems to be a lot of space wasted.

Meh.
Like making a cube-shaped lamp would be so hard.

I don't think I'd mind looking at it too much, but it's asymmetrical! =(

@hu_hu_cool: maybe im just missing something but i dont think this was to save space. I think it was just to be different. and they failed.

Ikea made the packaging out of the light. That's the right war round. And it only cost GB£3

@Emiat: The creation is what the master is needed for. That does not mean complexity, just a well thought out design. My experience has been that even complex origami designs can be unfolded and folded by an average person. The paper "wants" to fall back into place. My point was that in it's current state few will want it.
