Kevin Rose iPod Rumors: Price Cut, New iTunes 8.0 Features and Tall, Rounded Nano
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 1:18 PM on August 23, 2008
Kevin Rose's Apple crystal ball has been wrong more often than not (he was sorta right about US$199 iPhone), but this time he's seen pictures people! ("It looks pretty cool.") He says that not only will the new iPod nano be tall and skinny and giant-screened like we've heard, he says it'll be rounded (like iPhone 3G's ass-side, but all the way around), and even provides this handy rendering. His other rumourage, like a huge iTunes update with for-real new features, is all way more reasonable than his past forecasting, so they're actually possible too!
- Revamp of entire iPod line.
- Small cosmetic changes to Touch, Nano to see significant redesign (see pic below).
- iPods to see fairly large price drops to distance itself from the US$199 iPhone.
- iPod touch 2.1 software, iPhone to get update very soon after.
- iTunes 8.0 ("it's a big update w/new features").
- All of this coming in the next 2-3 weeks.
In a way I kinda miss the crazier predictions even if he is more correct now--I liked hoping that at least one of his more outlandish ones was true. And he says more info--with pictures--is coming. Has Kevin finally gotten a rock solid source? [Kevin Rose]

RENDERING people.
Apple isn't stupid.
Ok, they aren't completely stupid.
They aren't going to release an Ipod Nano and it not deserve the name. It will be small if this guy is even telling the truth. Whatever the case, I'm not signing up for his twitter crap. Thats all he probably want's anyway. More followers. To drink his Apple flavor Kool-Aid that will take them on a ride to Jesus. On a comet.

- The curve on the front isn't going to happen because of glare.
-The back getting tappered to feel thinner, even if it's technically a little thicker, is quite possible since we have the iPhone and MBA using this same illusion.
- I also doubt that Apple would release tall Nano that uses widescreen viewing by turning the device without using a special backlight clickwheel that doesn't change the display to suit the viewer.
@Noobs-R-Us: I'd wait as you'll get nice discounts from Apple Refurbished and other sellers for old style.

For whatever reason, I just don't see Apple going this direction on the Nano. I think it's the curve and the way it sticks out from the LCD that doesn't seem "Apple"-like. It looks fragile.

Curved Nano? I don't likey! This Nano will actually be BIGGER than all the previous? Wow! It looks to be even bigger than the Mini. Perhaps they should go back to calling it the Mini instead of the Nano.
I just might have to buy a Nano FAT before it goes away...anyway I'll wait for the announcement before I make my move.

How can they drop the prices of the iPods without killing the Shuffle completely? The only price point not covered by the iPod family is the magic $100. If they're dropping prices, I'm sure they'll only do it for the Touch line which is massively overpriced as is.

I still say the touch will drop $100 and have 2.0.1 out of the box and that's all they are doing for touch. At best, a very minor upgrade alla the classic- like a curved back or gloss plastic. At abosulute maximum fan boy appeasement they could add physical volume conrol.
What about a nano sized touch? I haven't heard anyone throw that out there. Now it's out there. Can I take it back?

Garmin and TomTom have maps preloaded... no cell network needed on standalone GPS devices.
An iPod would have no problem storing maps... it's data right?
I'd settle for regional or even state by state maps if you didn't wanna load the whole USA or other countries. I'd be happy with just NC, SC and maybe TN.

What I´d LOVE to see is GPS in the iPod touch and i mini-isight in the top of the screen for iChat, it´d be awsome and it´d be really different to the iPhone!
But the real del here for me is iTunes 8, i like iTunes, but it need a redesign and a lot of fixes...iTunes 8

@heylookitscook:
You sound like quite a whiner. Who needs any gadget anyway? We need food and shelter and pretty much everything else is just "want" rather than "need".
I don't know what you do with your gadgets but I'm on my 2nd iPod in 5 years and both still work fine. The battery life on the first iPod is quite poor at this stage but then again it's gone through several hundreds of charging cycles so you can't really execpt any lithium-ion battery work well at that point. Other than that it works great. The 2nd iPod is two years old and works and looks like new.
If people buy a gadget then manufacturers make them. If they stop buying then the manufacturers also stop making them because it would be a loss-making business. So from the fact that Apple brings out new models every once in a while you can figure out that people buy them like crazy. Hell, you've bought 4 in 3 years and a Zune. Clearly according to your definition of "need" people "need" iPods.

Sources tell me that Kevin Rose will become more elongated, with a rounder face, and an overall larger mouth. Expect his front-facing girth to become even more convex, much like the ass side of, well, his ass, with noticeable expansion of his moobs, what one insider likened to muffin tops growing out of the breakfast plates of his chest. I've seen pictures and can confirm that Kevin Rose 2.0 weighs in at a hefty 225 lbs, a beta version of which has already been released to friends and family. Sources tell me a public release of the large-mouthed, muffin-moobed Kevin Rose "fatboy" is imminent.

Wow...lots of ragging on the iPods, huh? I still have my 1G Nano, I've taken care of the battery, and it still lasts about 8 hours. I haven't cracked the screen as was reported ABSOLUTELY WOULD happen when they were first released. I'm happy with the product. I would buy another, but, as with any iRelease, I'll skip a few updates before upgrading - as mine is a 1G, I am due, and would like to get a 16GB player.
HOWEVER, what I am really excited about is the possibility that Apple can better fix networkability in iTunes. Have support for a server with music files and a client machine with the ability to load iPods, have support for watch folders for auto-adding to the library (without applescript) etc. Yes there are hokey programs like Folderwatch that do this, but they are kludgy and do not work well.
Also have fingers crossed for a new MacBook SOON - I got some coin burning a whole in my pocket, hurry up already!

Man Fuck the ipod price drops! I don't give a damn if Apple wants their products to be available to lower income demographics- if people are struggling to pay bills then they don't need to be tempted to shell out over 100 bucks on an MP3 player.
Ipods are totally losing their culture. I'm sitting here staring across the room at my lined up collection of outdated ipods with their beautiful cubed boxes, and just wishing that apple would stop cutting corners to lower prices! As far as I know they only have a license from Navteq to download sections at a time online. Thus far niether Navteq nor Tele Atlas has any plans to allow their maps to be purchased on the Apps store. In anycase, who here would be willing to pay $100/ year to download maps into their Touch when iPhone users can get it for free on Google?

@Kharnellius: Because of the size of the click wheel and the placement of it. It's not likely that they would make the click wheel much smaller than what they have now. It becomes too small for big fingers.

@Noobs-R-Us: The iPod Touch already supports Google Maps, and will probably support a Garmin or TomTom application once it hits if the Touch has GPS. It's not totally necessary, but Apple could put it in.

excellent! here's an opportunity for a zune fanboy like me to claim that Apple's actually copying Microsoft!
Wait. No. I hate fanboyism. I'd have to shoot myself. It's also probably not true.

@alexmg2420: The Zune body design is not unique to the Zune. Check out the numerous iPod nano look-alikes on ebay and look at the similarities. They have taller displays than the nano for horizontal orientation video, and have those big ugly display borders, JUST like the one the Zune has, only the Zune is more recent.

Sorry folks, like it or not, that's the real deal. Working with manufacturers in China (I work for a reseller) I've seen the final shape and size of the new Nano. I guarantee this is it. It's also not at all huge. I don't understand how you people are determining the size without seeing the player in any sort of context, but it's not big or cumbersome at all.

I've probably purchased my last iPod, at least for the near future (iPod Nano (RED)). I find iTunes annoying (very sluggish), iPods are pretty featureless (uhh, FM radio?), and there are plenty of alternative players that are small, have screens, radio, and longer battery life. I don't need an iPod for videos or games (that's what my PSP is for). The glare on this new iPod looks pretty horrible to me.

Really hope this is incorrect, that Nano looks awful, the old one is fine.
A 'nano touch' would be much much cooler.

How are people going to be able to scroll really fast on the click wheel if it's all rounded and bent? They will have to like go up and down. I dont think many people are going to buy this.
I'd rather stick with my iPod touch.

Its funny that everyone is burning Kevin Rose for some weird reason, yes I know he's been wrong before on his predictions but who hasn't in the past. Even if he's wrong just showing us what could be released down the pipeline from Apple for the new iPods is exciting. It's not the end of the world ya know?

That nano is disgusting.
The new 3g one has finally grown on me, I love the form factor and feel of it, I was really, really hoping for the nano 4g to become the 'nano touch' with a nice big screen (full size of the nano front) but with a couple of hard buttons on the side like the iphone 3g, so you can pause without looking - etc.
Really, really disapointing if this is true, that long skinny weird shaped thing does not look hot at all or functional, you'll be holding it in your hand but the video will be widescreen and sideways, unless it has the motion sensor in it.
Please be wrong :/

That "new Nano" looks like an altered photo of an Infobar 2 cell phone sold here in Japan.

If this one shows up, you can add it to the list of stolen designs from Apple - in this case the Infobar 2 in my pocket.

Right then, i'm sure this will start a flame war but oh well, from all the years that apple have be making iPods and Macbook's, you'll note how symmetry plays a hugh role in all there product design, so at a guess i'd say that it might look like moke up above BUT, without the top screen side being quite as rounded, and the screen not and long thus keeping it the same overall length as the 1st and 2nd gen Nanos.
As for iTunes, i have used it on Windows and yes it sucks big floppy donkey balls, and i perfer to use Media Player for music, but for some reason i find itunes works very well on OSX. Yes it has got bloated over that few versions and adding more stuff isn't going to help that any time soon. So for all the people who say the itunes suck, i'd like to know if you have been using it on Mac or PC. (Takes cover as a Nerd war brakes out)

Looking foward to the new iPods. Hopefully they'll get rid of the chrome back (No More Scratches!!). I like the rounded shape, but don't know about the rounded glass over the screen. Interesting the picture uses a black click wheel on silver (Like the black keyboard on the macbook air). I think apple is getting rid of white. Maybe the new macbook will have a black lighted apple on the lid (Just look at what they did to the iMac)

Will iTunes 8.0 work well with vista or will the two programs continue to battle each other? If they dont get these issues ironed out I might actually buy a zune.
