Jet Explodes in Midair, Leaves Us Scratching Our Heads
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 3:00 AM on August 2, 2008
Even while I knew what was going to happen when I saw this video, it shocked me when I saw it exploding the way it did, with no warning whatsoever. To be honest, I don't know if this Saudi fighter jet is a real fighter jet or not. It sounds like one, it looks like one, and it explodes like one, so it must be an aeroplane or a duck. But somehow, some people think it may be an RC model. Still, the idea of the plane just exploding like that reminds you how fragile our technological world is--says the guy taking a plane on Monday. What do you people think? Real or model?
[Editor's Note: Definitely a jet RC model!]

It sounds like a real jet? Are you serious? Have you ever even heard a real fighter jet before?
It looks like a real jet? Yeah? With it's landing gear out while pulling straight up into the vertical?
It just exploded? Are you seriously saying that you can't see the power lines that it runs into?
If this isn't a joke... wow...

Posted 3:22 AM 2/8/08
Yeah, come on, I'm no expert but it's pretty easy to tell that was an RC just from the way it handled... I'm pretty sure a pilot's head would explode if they pulled that rapid ascension off, and those power lines would be absolutely decimated if a full size plane hit them. And that was a totally lame explosion.

@steveyun: I have to agree...there are a group of people around the camera give the "pilot" directions. And, if that was a real jet, I doubt it would have stayed close enough to the camera based on the maneuvers it was doing.
As for the sound, there is a guy near my office that has an R/C jet...it sounds like the real thing...just smaller.

It did not explode "with no warning whatsoever." You can see it flying into the powerlines. You can see it not harm the powerlines when it went poof, just like a small model would. You can see how small the debris is at it falls to the ground. Why would anyone think this is a full-size jet?

As other people have said it exploded because it flew into the power lines. Another thing you notice is that the landing gear is out. Real jet fighters stow them as soon as the take off.

That is absolutely an RC model. The flight path is jerkey - look at the initial approach and quick ascent. The way it moves through the air is unstable and gives away the small scale of the craft. It's an RC vehicle. The reason for the explosion however is unknown - it doesn't appear to have been detonated. It seems like a spark or fire ignited the fuel tank.

Posted 3:07 AM 2/8/08
Definitely an RC plane, one, it hits a powerline and the only damage is to the plane, had it been a real fighter jet, it would have taken out the lines and created a huge explosion on ground impact. Second, the initial ascent that the aircraft takes would have made all but a handful of pilots black out, that would have been a 12-15G maneuver. It is a nice RC jet though, shame the controller was trying to read Gizmodo at the same time he was flying...

How did this even pass the sniff test? You can EASILY see the powerlines, you can also easily see the powerlines move and bounce around right as the plane intersects with them, which is also the moment is explodes.
It also moves too 'jerky' and twitchy to be full sized.
Finally, the debris falls too fast to be full sized. There is a reason they show models in movies in slow motion. 9.8 m/s^2 has a distance component to it, so you have to slow the video down when showing a scaled down model. Otherwise objects appear to fall too fast for their supposed size.

It's an RC aircraft hitting a power line, pay attention to how it reacts to the "explosion" A full scale craft would not flip so suddenly without disintegrating. I've flown RC aircraft for years. Oh, and here's a screenshot clearly showing the electricity arcing along the power line when the model hits it.

Things people are not noticing:
1. If it is a real plane (and I'm not saying it is), it would be _much_ farther away than the powerlines, which are between the camera and the vehicles seen right before the plane pops.
2. You can't go by the shaky flight path of an airplane that's being filmed by a video camera that's being aimed by a shaky hand. For all we know, the flight is smooth as glass.
3. The most telling aspect of this is that the explosion is scaled all wrong for being a real fighter jet. It starts with a bright flash of white light _without_ combustion, which does look more electrical in nature. The combustive explosion itself also occurs much too fast to be a full-size jet. And finally, you see burning shards falling down, which would be highly unlikely given how quick the explosion is. Smoldering, probably, but not likely to have visible flames (certainly not from that distance).
4. It's very hard to tell for sure, but it appears that the jet flies between the lightposts and the camera as it makes its initial approach. Any real jet that did that would have looked a lot bigger, and would have put all those spectators flat on their asses.

LOL.
I was expecting to read the comments seeing things like "How can you NOT tell this is a model plane?! Are you guys seriously that clueless?!"
Instead I see posts with whole lectures on the flight path, damage done to power lines, sound, crowd reaction, and E=MC^2 that prove that this is definitely an R/C plane.
People - LOOK at it. It's an RC plane! If you can't figure that out just by SEEING the video, you probably shouldn't be reading Gizmodo.

Def an rc plane,. If you have ever been that close to a flying fighter jet before ( i have f-14 fly bys with afterburners on) you would know it would have been much louder than that.

Clearly an RC model. Anyone who has seen and heard the thunder of the real deal would recognize this. This plane gives off no low frequency roar and it falls to the ground way too fast to be a full size jet.

These kinds of things always pop into my mind at the worst times, like right as a plane starts to take off or when my iPod feels a little warm and I remember all those times they've blown up. But the iPod one isn't nearly as bad since I haven't been able to find anything on Classics blowing up.

Look R/C to me. You don't typically see full sized jets doing high speed flybys like that with the landing gear down. Plus at the moment it explodes you can tell that the aircraft has very little mass based on the way the fuselage just falls to the ground.

Well I see the government's secret internet disinformation team known as "Funhouse Omega" has been hard at work discrediting this video from Groom Lake. The video shows the testing of the Navy's new AFM (Accelerated Focused Microwave) missle and anti-arcraft defense system. The target "plane" is either a class six or seven military drone.

look at how it fell from the sky. G is a constant that doesn't scale. How fast something falls from the sky can reveal how far that object is away and hence how big it really is. It is obviously a model.
In movie business, they have to slow down the film to make scaled movement look real.

- Hundreds of people log onto the Giz to tell him he's wrong and stupid in the comments section.
- Thousands and thousands of other people read the comments about how stupid Jesus is.
- Gawker media gets many page views of people wondering and commenting on this stupid Jesus person.
- Jesus gets huge bonus cheque signed by BLam.
- Jesus laughs all the way to the bank to deposit huge bonus cheque.
- Jesus and Addy buy solid gold water dish for Fred the face-eating dog
And all of you morons are still queued up in line to be the 150th person to say that it's an RC and that Jesus is stupid, and show off your knowledge of RC plane physics... Hmmm, maybe it's you-all who need to get out more....

With that scale, if it exploded like that the sound wouldnt get to you for about a half a second if it were a real jet. In a smaller scale you'd hear the explosion instantly. So yeah it's an rc jet.

I agree with the differential diagnosis. This is an RC that flew into powerlines. You can see that the powerlines stop the momentum of the plane. Not exactly possible if it's a 4 ton jet fighter. You can also guess the scale on the fly-by. Don't work yourselves up, just a cool youtube video.

You can see the landing gear, it is definitely an RC. The kind of thrust that a real Mirage produces woulda knocked those people on their asses. I think they are some where in the order of 20'000 pounds, you just can't fly that close to people like that in a real jet.
