Japanese Arcade Mania Book By Kotaku's B.Ashcraft
Posted by Brian Lam at 4:49 AM on August 4, 2008
Brian Ashcraft's book, Arcade Mania: The Turbo-Charged World of Japan's Game Centers, is available for preorder on Amazon. Brian explains that with the arrival of Street Fighter IV, now's the right time to explain the history, culture and colour of Japanese arcades. (For the first time in English, too.) [Kotaku, Amazon]

I sorely miss having widespread arcades in the States.

@Griffehpoo: the uber power of newer gen consoles make arcade machines obsolete...

@urbanturban666: I enjoy the convenience, of course. I've got all the newest consoles. Arcades will always hold a special place in my heart, though.

I've always wanted to start up a big arcade, serve popcorn and french fries and soda, and all the 80's classic stuff I miss so much. Except it's a guaranteed failure, nobody wants to play stand-up arcade games for money these days except nostalgics like me. BUT, if I ever did see a business plan for an arcade that worked, I'd do it just to work at something I love.

on a similar vein - the film "king of kong" is really good, shows the USA's competetive arcade scene is still going - albeit with the same guy's as was in the 80's.
