iTunes Support Store: iPhone App Crashes Fixed
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 1:45 AM on August 24, 2008
Good news, iPhone users! Looks like Apple has finally fixed that 2.0 app crashing problem. One Gizmodo reader received an email last night from the iTunes Support Store with instructions for redownloading applications you've already bought (for free, of course) and was given a US$15 gift certificate for his troubles! Maybe Adam will convert to Macs after all? [ - Thanks Henry!]

It looks like Apple are getting it together again. Now, how bout you fix that 3G problem once and for all?

i don't think this is the solution. I've done this numerous times and it doesn't always work. This seems like an itunes support short term fix to keep this guy happy. I think the problem is within itunes

Does this change the fact that AT&T just decided to text me to let me know that the 2.0.2 firmware was out, and a "Critical update" and if I haven't already done so, go get nao?
But yea, I figured it was the apps not the firmware that was the problem, mostly as all my apps run fine. Apple created and otherwise.

November I say goodbye to Verizon and hello iPhone. These growing pains should be cleared up by then.

@Xavoc: Could be, but I live in a place where I have almost 100% 3G coverage, and my typing hasn't seen any more problems then when I had 1.1.4 so I have to say maybe it is, but most likely, typing and 3G switch are still firmware issues.

@CTJoyce: I wonder if background apps are what are causing the lag when typing, switching to 3g signal, etc...

I got some random-ass email from Apple yesterday about some problems authorizing machines to play downloaded content. I've never had this problem but they gave me a 5 credit song coupon anyway "for my troubles."
Anyone else get this?

@Sam_Zebian: A sync and/or backup should not be interrupted by a received SMS unless you choose to acknowledge its receipt by tapping the screen in the middle of it. I frequently get SMS notifications in the middle of backup/sync and never have an issue.
Also, if you've updated to the latest iTunes and firmware, the non-first-of-the-day backups are much faster (well, mine are anyways).
Just curious, since you seem bitter about the time they sent you the SMS, when would you have had them send it, and how would they have a clue you were in the middle of a backup...?

@Anogar: In case you haven't read previous Giz article, Steve Jobs himself admitted iPhone issues raised by many customers and promised fix within a month or two. So it's really a widespread problem.

I had a fun experience this morning.. I was connecting my iphone 16GB to my new computer to sync with itunes.. well, it cleared all 5GBs of my old mp3s off the phone, and wanted to put all of them back on from my "new" library.
Doesn't seem so bad, but it was taking 12 seconds a song. 1700 songs would have taken almost six farking hours to sync my damn iphone, not to mention the 3 movies after that.

I'm a Windows user, but I bought into all the iPhone 3G hype and picked one up. I really haven't had any issues. Downloading apps, no problem, downloading music, no problem, it works totally fine with my office's Exchange server, email, contacts, calendars, etc... Dunno. A lot of my co-workers have 3G iPhones and I don't know anyone with serious issues.
I guess I could just be lucky, but I use my phone a ton and haven't had serious connection issues or anything at all. Seems sort of like a 'vocal minority' sort of thing to me.

Any chance of maybe sharing the instructions? Saw the title and my heart leaped, but then nothing...
If it's just a matter of re-downloading the the apps, I, and I am sure most of us, have already figured that out on our own. I wouldn't call it a fix though.

@rjbuddyboi:
I love Simplify too, but the other significant limitation is you can't do anything else on the iPhone while its playing. When I'm traveling, I can browse the web and listen to my music that is already on my iPhone. Simplify (and Pandora, AOL Radio, etc.) don't allow that (yet).

I've found most lag takes place after a sync or even just docking it for a charge. A reboot after any such connection seems to fix things up pretty good. At least as far as lag etc.

@Scuba Steve: 1,700 songs is a lot to load in the iPhone and I myself have almost the same number of songs and Podcast. My solution, I use the free app 'Simplify'. You can access your entire library of songs and podcast (excluding movie files) wirelessly. The only caveat is you need to have your computer on all the time to gain access to your iTunes. You can also share your library with up to 30 friends. It worked nicely for me although there may be a lag from time to time due to buffering. So far the application haven't crashed on me.

@dogcow: I believe it's because apple doesn't allow 3rd party aps to run in the background therefore only one of them can be used at a time. So you can't choose music from aol while you sudoku. I'm guessing.

Posted 5:24 AM 24/8/08
@BiZarRroBALlmeR: You're right, and that's the main point against those streaming apps. Until they're cleared for background operation (if they ever are), they're useless in many iPhone use scenarios.
They're only useful as long as you're not using the iPhone. But I guess that's the main difference between an iPhone/touch and your classical iPod: the ability to do more.
Granted, Simplify & Co. are still useful when you're just walking, biking, reading a book on the train, driving (with a car kit for the phone) etc...
But then, I guess your battery's going to drain pretty fast with an always-transmitting 3G connection, and that would be my second point against the app(s).

ok, here's the deal. something went wrong at their end with authentication.
they added pretty much everything i've downloaded in the last 2-3 weeks (apps, music & video) in to my download queue again - i didn't need to manually download anything. this isn't a case of me downloading each thing one by one.
obviously, i ended up with duplicates in my library but it was very easy to tidy up.

I was having this same app crashing problem. My fix was De-authorizing all computers associated with my iTunes account and then re-authorizing the computer I was using. When I synced it backed everything up found all apps I have downloaded in the past and re installed them. No more opening apps to a black screen everything worked great.

I think this solution could help. I got my iPhone 3G last week, and it ran great without the apps. Then I restored it to the last backup, which also updated to 2.0.1 and added all my media. It started running like crap. 2.0.2 didn't help, and it's still dropping 3G for no apparent reason. (It just switched, and the key board is lagging... Very frustrating). I would love to experiment by deleting everything and maybe downgrading the os, but I don't want to lose my high scores on Super Monkey Balls!!! Plus, I don't see how reinstalling apps that don't run I the background can effect Safari, SMS, 3G, etc.

not so fast....I downloaded the update Tuesday, and I've rebooted twice since then - always due to 3rd party apps not loading until the reboot. Bill

Re-downloading all your apps doesn't fix the apps crashing issue. iTunes support just gave themselves about 8 hours before this dude calls back. Why 8 hours? Cause it'll take him 2 hours to re-download everything, 3 hours to uninstall all his apps. Another 3 to reinstall them.
Its good that Apple finally admits that its an issue but don't give people false hopes.
For me, keeping about 20 apps (not to mention installing them 1 or 2 at a time) has kept my iPhone working well for the past week or so. Before, I was restoring my phone every other day.

Apples crash all the time.. the fanboys just dont like to admit it.. they are too blinded by the the demonic stare that hypnotizes them from Steve Jobs.
Im sorry, but Apples arent worth it.. they are outdated hardware with a pricetag that matches what should be top of the line. A Mac is nothing but a PC in a pretty package that tends to overheat, melt, catch fire, throw sparks, or just plain die.
