Is this the Futuremark 3D OpenGL-Powered Car Dashboard of the Future?
Posted by John Mahoney at 9:10 AM on August 28, 2008
We've seen all-digital concept dashboards before, but none seem as impressive 3D (or close to reality) as Futuremark's. It scraps everything behind and to the right of the wheel in favour of a smooth, uninterrupted display onto which an OpenGL powered 3D engine renders everything you might need--instrumentation, navigation, entertainment system controls, climate controls, everything.
Dashboard UIs have been getting a lot of geek attention lately, especially in the Gran Turismo-inspired Nissan GT-R. For now it's still just a concept, but it's reported that it, or something like it, will soon find its way into Audi SUVs. Can we call it KITT? [TG Daily via Crunch Gear]

Futuremark Announces Groundbreaking Automotive Demo for Audi at NVISION
San Jose, California - Aug. 25th, 2008 - Futuremark, creators of the industry standard benchmarking software for graphics performance for OpenGL ES and DirectX APIs, has created a demonstration for Audi's In-Car Graphics System future concept to be shown for the first time at NVISION in San Jose. It delivers a fully rendered car dashboard and all instruments shown in a 3D view, including 3D navigation using stunning and realistic effects and viewsas well as a 3D car infotainment system with vehicle info and cool 3D environmental controls rendered in real-time for on-road Automotive usage.
"We are delighted to work with Audi due to their professional expertise in the car industry," said Petri Talala, Vice President and General Manager of the Handheld and Embedded Group at Futuremark Oy., "Audi is a leader in this field with sophisticated, real-time rendered and high quality content available for future infotainment systems, and being able to have our graphics engine experts and artists contribute to this effort is very special for Futuremark."
In-Car graphics systems are evolving rapidly with an increasing amount of digital instrumentation used inside of automotive designs. Khronos APIs such as OpenGL and OpenGL ES will be widely adopted for rendering backend of digital instrumentation. With this new automotive demo, Futuremark is showing the flexibility of both its OpenGL ES engines and its art pipelines that were used to deliver this project on an entirely new platform to Audi's delight. The Engines and Pipeline Tools used to create the demo are all available for licensing directly from Futuremark. Also offered are custom demo services for Automotive companies who want to show off tomorrows User Interface and Digital 3D designs for Automobiles today. Futuremark's has an upcoming automotive benchmark that is in development which will utilise real-world use cases such as car dashboard, info-system, and navigation workloads based on OpenGL ES 1.x and ES 2.0.

exactly in reality it might cost 600-1000$ to build for a car but they will easily mark it as a 6-7000$ addon for only premium level cars.

@jcrockerman: Cadillac has had Heads Up Displays for some time now. but they charge wayyy too much for them to ever be mainstream. simply a light projection that shines on the windshield. lol.

a $1000 device which the car companies will stick in the cars for a $6000 add on. yeah right.. this won't work.. same reason nothing else works thats "new" the car companies use.. just like GPS from the car companies.. hell, they sell inferior pieces of junk(gps) for $700 when a $150 garmin device will run circles around it.

May be I'm old fashioned, but I like analog gauges on my cars.

All I want to see in car dashboards is drag-and-drop instrumentation, like OS X's widgets.

I'm still hoping tablet PC's will get native support for docking with car computers: just slide the tablet tray out from under the Radio system and mount your tablet..
...but I guess I'd crash or something.

google street view on a HUD or dashboard monitor in your car would be hella sweet...

This is cool stuff, but some might find it distracting (therefore, crash-causing), especially after someone mods it to display certain videos.

At the rate that video cards are going, putting one of these in your car will either kill your battery after a few months or bring your sedan's mileage down to SUV levels.
I can also see the headline now: Faulty drivers responsible for 30% of fatal crashes.

@jdizzle1337: There's a fail-safe system that works a lot like google street view that you might want to check out.
It's called "looking out the window of the car you're driving."

Will I be able to submit my Futuremark lap scores to the orb?

The repair bills on that will be ASTROnomical. Plus some geeks will whine about some dead pixels.
Listen up GM (and all): I'm NEVER buying a car with digital dash shit like this. Even if I could afford a BMW their freaky iDrive takes them off my list forever.

Don't you think that as these things get gadgetier it makes the appeal of simplicity increase? The popularity of the Flip / iPod. The fact that people still widely prefer an analog needle/dial speedo? Just thinking is all.
