iRiver Spinn Media Player Has a Great 70s Retro Flair, Feels Oh-So-Good
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 3:00 AM on August 31, 2008
I love the new analogue controller in the iRiver Spinn as much as I love its simple brushed aluminium design, the old radio-inspired user interface, and the whole packaging. While I'm still partial to direct touch interfaces--which the Spinn has as well, although it's not multitouch--the Spinn rolling thingie feels great, giving it a heavenly 70s analogue feeling.
The Good: Very good quality. The interface is simple, straightforward, and so is the device itself. They really nailed this one. As they told me, they are looking into the past to get some inspiration for their products, bypassing the whole let's-copy-Apple theme that dominates the MP3 industry. Good move, because they nailed it with this one.
The Bad: The AMOLED screen didn't seem to me like the best thing ever.
Bottom line: Great digital audio and movie player. While I couldn't try the synching with the computer--which it's crucial to get a good overall experience with this type of devices--it feels like a winner.
According to iRiver, it will arrive to the US in September, but they couldn't tell me the price. In the European market, it will arrive in October for 220 euros. [More IFA 2008 Coverage]

Looks like you could only use it in your right hand. Would kinda annoy me if I was already holding say, a soda in my right hand and I couldn't navigate it well because I wouldn't be able to hold that grip they have on the right side of the screen. In the first video you can kinda tell, the guy taking the video is holding the camera with the right how, and look at how he's holding the thing with his left. Does the screen rotate to fix that like the ipod touch?

Nice, looks like they came up with something good when they tried to get around the iPod-like scroll wheel.

Cool. As much as I want a Touch or whatever, I'm kind of tempted to try a non-Apple product after my 5g iPod dies. Just for the sake of shopping around... and I miss the ability to use my music player without looking at it. That was one of my favorite things about my mp3 cd player back in the day. Woo, 700 MB of memory!
Anyway that is one sexy device. I want one.

I couldn't really see much of the interface, although it looks interesting. The packaging looks cool, but is it enviro-friendly? Seems like a lot of aluminum for something that's just going to be thrown away, but I suppose that's recyclable. Not too sure about the plastic, though. That plastic doesn't look like a #1 or #2.

looks very cool :D put a phone function and wlan in it and you're good to go.
btw... an AMOLED is an Actice Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode
The active matrix is used in displays bigger than a regular mobile phone display. so the display is just a regular oled screen with an active matrix.

@baandoptager: The trumpet is not a speaker for the Spinn. It's just a concept MP3 player you can twist around. You can use it with headphones or the trumpet, which acts as a speaker.

The case for it looks so cool. And... the spinn trumpet/grammophone speaker for it (saw it at engadget: [www.engadget.com] )... omg. Its nice.

@Jesus Diaz: I knew it was concept so far. But what do you mean exactly by mp3 player you can twist around?. I assumed it just plugged into the bottom of the spinn. ???

Irivers are very original, absolutely love the spinn... *drooling* damn, this is hot! .A perfect dedicated media player (no phone, multi app nonsense) throw in some add on and premium earbuds and its good to go. not sure bout the ergonomics though....

Wait... you don't like the screen? That's the deal-killer for me. I'm intrigued by the UI and the spin control, but if the screen isn't as nice as say, the iPhone, then I'm not buyin'.
How does the screen compare to the iPhone?

Wow! I really like what I see. I'm a die hard iPod fan, but iRiver has managed to turn my head with this device.
Throw in Mac compatibility, decent syncing software, and good battery life and we're getting somewhere.

This looks like a much better option then the dreaded click wheel. And a volume button!? It's almost like they thought about ergonomics! But, the volume button looks like it's in the wrong place. Overall, looks like things are looking up.

@Weihovah: I wouldn't. I love my D2, plus it has an SD-HC card slot. I have the 8gb D2(which I paid 140 for) and an 8gb SD-HC card(paid 35 for).

I might get one :)

I want it! Finally, this could be my first mp3 player. I was still rocking the CD's, but I'm sure this will finally turn me over to all-digital music playback.
Now all that's left is waiting for a release date here in the Netherands...

I've never loved an mp3 player more than my clix, but leave it to iriver to convince me that the clix UI and navigation scheme is antiquated. Me want. BADLY.

Interesting. If it supports UMS like my D2, I might consider it. If they make you use some crap music manager or WMP to sync, forget it.

@Jesus Diaz: from what you've written about the trumpet speaker and what has been mentioned elsewhere about it, it looks to be more of an optional accessory as opposed to being part of the 'pipe' DAP.
After all, you were told that the 'pipe' could be used with headphones or the speaker, meaning it's an integral part of the player.
Also, Engadget has a shot of it plugged straight into a SPINN here.

mmmh.. scrolling with your LEFT hand only when in portrait and at the same time your hand partially covers the screen... but in landscape you need to scroll with your RIGHT hand... but it looks like you need both hands.
It loks nice, but it is just a gimmick.. fail.

The player will be available in 4 and 8GB. Movie play time is 5hour, music is 24 hours - apparently. The AMOLED is stunning and vivid and I dont see why people are slacking it off, I checked it out at their stand today and its far more vibrant than the iphone.

I was down at the iRiver stand aswell today and this is by far the most interesting gadget I've seen. Its really nice and hefty, not heavy or anything, but VERY solid and sturdy - think solid metal.
I'd have to disagree about the AMOLED screen though - its amazing! They only had some poor quality TV-rips of "The Hills" episodes on there but there was one AMOLED demo track that really made the colours pop. Very vivid colours and with a video play time of 5 hours (24h for audio) its more than I'll ever need.
