iPhone to Cost US$990 in Russia: Yakov Smirnoff Has New Material
Posted by Sean Fallon at 8:00 AM on August 26, 2008
If you thought this post was going to contain a "in Soviet Russia" joke--think again. Besides, spending a whopping US$990 on an iPhone is hardly a laughing matter. Actually, the price is a bargain compared to the 600,000 or so iPhones that have hit the market through unauthorised sales--but it is still well out of the budget of your average Russian citizen.
Nonetheless, Apple believes that it can sell 3.5 million phones in the country within two years. That seems like a lofty goal, but let's not forget that Moscow is one of the most expensive cities in the world. There could very well be enough wealthy citizens out there willing to drop nearly US$1000 on a phone that has quickly become a must-have status symbol. [Washington Post]

Because the iPhone in Russia caters to the wealthy where they have enough money to buy anything they want. $1,000 is pocket lint.

People... that is the same cost as a lot of other "smart phones" here in SPb. Many people ... alot of people have no problem spending that much money on the iPhone. Russia actually does on par if not better in phone sales and services as America. Its a fact... look it up.
I am grateful that it is under MTS because that means my wife and I don't need to change our phone numbers :))))

So, in communism, everybody is the same, like doctors and garbage men, the same. So, does that mean nobody buys a Mac, because it's just the same as a PC. Does that mean that if anybody did buy a Mac, they wouldn't do it for the "prestige" of spending more money than some one else. Does this also mean that there are no fan boys, since everything is the same. What's more, would the iPhone be free for the people, but since there are more people than iPhones, nobody could have one, since there would be an unequality?

In Soviet Russia iPhone owns you! No I'm not joking 900 bucks? That phone really will really own you like a slave for that kind of cash, this is like when back in the day jeans were considered currency in the USSR. Imagine how China is gonna be? Is it out in China yet? I mean officially.

That threw me also, the last -- and only time -- I went threw Branson Missouri. I think Andy Williams is big there too... sort of like Vegas of the midwest (and I use that term loosely), big acts with names that no one really cares about anymore. Of course, I suppose if I were retired in the midwest and had no where else to drive to, I might reconsider...
@CrashOverride777:
But Moscow also has more billionaires per capita than any other city -- or some other surprising stat. OTOH this isn't that surprising, and I'll leave out the obvious comments about how the thugs who used to run the country are still running the country and making money...

It costs the same here in the Philippines if you buy it from the official carrier prepaid. It's ironic the poorer countries Philippines get to have the most expensive iPhone pricing. It's ironic still that they still get keep getting sold out, lol:)

It probably could sell 3.5 million iphones in russia.
But they shouldn't tie it down to one provider.
And the iphone is a sign of status in foreign countries i came back from the carribean and people with iphones were the rich or those with important jobs or positions.

Maybe Roman Abromovich could buy all 3.5 million phones Apple is hoping to sell and give them to the poor Russian's as a reimbursement for the cash he stole from the Russian people when he was allowed to buy half of Sibneft for $100 million only to sell his share for Billions a few short years later. His net worth is now an estimated $23.5 Billion

First about iPhones in Russia. Maybe they are not cheap but in big cities even students are willing to buy iPhones 3G. $1000 is a quite reasonable price for such a device.
Then, about Russia and Georgia. The USA press lies to all of you. It was Georgia who began the war with South Osetia. They killed people of South Osetia. Thousands of them. Women. Children. Everyone. People lost their parents, friends, families. They lost their homes and ran to Russia. It was their only way to save their lifes. Russia helped them and couldn't just watch all these horrors. Russia tried to stop the war and in fact did it.
I can't imagine HOW Georgia could do such a terrible thing. Their leader seems a new Hitler. But much more stupid.
And now American people blame Russia.. for what? For saving thousands of South Osetia people? Don't let the press which was bought by some government leaders make a mess out of your head. It was really all Georgia fault. Not Russia.

First about iPhones in Russia. With cost of $1000 they will be much much much cheaper than they are there today. It is really a reasonable price for a smartphone without a AT&T or whatsoever contract. It's not quite nice that there is no videocamera in iPhone3G.. In fact it still can capture video but there is no such an option in the SDK from Apple. Too bad :( There are so great programs that use video in iPhone but can't get access to AppStore right now.. for example, Qik
So.. don't really know what this chaos is about. Wealthy citizens, hmm? Even student are willing to buy iPhones in Russia and waiting for them day and night ;)
The second thing is about Georgia and Russia. This topic was concerned in discussion and it's very important. USA news programs lie about the situation.
It was Georgia who invaded South Osetia and killed thousands of people there. Even WOMEN and CHILDREN. Isn't it horrible? Russia only helped to stop this war. It helped people of South Osetia who lost their homes and relatives. The USA press makes everything possible to make Georgia a victim. But the real country which suffered most is South Osetia. I can't even imagine what else Georgia could do with South Osetia people if Russia weren't able to stop this war..
