iPhone Copy and Paste Between Applications Is Here, But Not from Apple
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 7:15 PM on August 20, 2008
At last, iPhone copy and paste between applications is here. However, it doesn't come from Apple, but from MagicPad developer Zac White. Cali Lewis, the ever-smiling presenter at GeekBrief, got the scoop on his new OpenClip open-source framework, which will enable any developer to implement copy and paste between applications without violating Apple's developer agreement.
OpenClip, which is non-profit and fully open source, doesn't use any background processing. Applications that use the framework will be able to copy any kind of information into a common pasteboard, as well as read from it. The framework is smart too: If you copy styled text or HTML text, it will respect the format you used, but only if the application in which you are pasting supports it. In Cali's example, the HTML snippet in the pasteboard gets copied with full HTML support to the WordPress application, but only as normal, clean text with no formatting into MagicPad.
Right now, only a few applications are implementing the open standard. We can only hope that it takes the iPhone app world by storm. Either that or Apple wakes up already and smells the coffee. This implementation makes sense, and you already use the behaviour for other things, like saving images from Safari to photo album. Like Cali says, it may not be a priority for them, but it is for millions out there. [GeekBrief- Thanks Rick!]

Before the complaining starts and uniformed speculation as to why a developer can do it before Apple can you might want to take a look at Za White's video about why it's harder for Apple. It covers the logistical issues that Apple would have to face compared to a lone developer and goes into detail as to how he thinks Apple could best include Cppy/Paste services. He does a great of outlining how the functions could work, but that still isn't the coding for it.

You know what the magicpad video sounded like to me...
"myeh myeh myeh... plth plth... windows mobile's text selection method with a magnifying glass over your finger... myeh myeh plththththththth!"
Apple = dumb for not including cut/copy/paste

great strategy on getting copy-paste on a non-hacked iphone without breaking any license agreements, but I still want Apple to release it within the OS so that we don't have to depend on developers for the feature and be able to use it within the native iphone apps like safari.

What strikes me as funny is if they included something as simple as copy/paste in the latest update--you know, the 2.0.2 that didn't fix anything 3G-wise, they might have actually garnered some positive spin out of the ordeal.

At the very least, a button that will automatically put your email into a field would be nice.
And no, copy and paste shouldn't be hard for an Apple coder. They have access to the code and have had it longer than in independent developer. Apple has had well over a year to figure it out.
If an indy can do it, a billion-dollar company can do it too.

Preview of Steve Jobs '09 keynote:
"People don't need to 'copy and paste' old thoughts. What they need are new thoughts. That's why we have developed iDea. iDea will insert new concepts into any text entry field. That's not all; iDea is dynamically integrated into the operating system and require no input from the user. It's thin..., thinner than a post-it note. How much will it cost? Each new thought will cost just $0.99."

Wow cut and paste is really a big deal. I have a found a few times when I think it would be handy, but I wouldn't consider myself a heavy iPhone user.

@DJJS: Stevie have more serious concerns than just crappy implementations like "Copy-paste" and "3 megapixel or more camera".
He must make the iPhone more fashionable and Apple like, to sell more, MORE. With less features from the box, of course...

It's a great idea, and it looks like it's done well. The problem is that copy paste is most useful in safari and in email, and I don't think apple is going to include this into those, therefore making it pretty much useless.

Not only did they program copy and paste for the iPhone, they defended Apple's inability to program the feature that put them on the GUI map. How nice. Fruit basket from Cupertino is on the way.

This is not copy/paste. Forcing developers to embed special code into their apps in order to use this fudged feature is complete BS. iPhone 3G = One fail after another.

See kids? Meth ain't all bad. The only time when that chick sleeps is when she blinks, and that's the kind of dedication it takes to come up with a copy and paste solution. Let that be a lesson to all you would-be-developers.

@Bluesk1d: I kinda agree. If the code is simple though and not too bulky it wouldn't be that hard to be adopted as a universal standard.

Apple is going to nip this in the bud one of two ways:
1. Change their SDK agreement, rendering all of this guy's work useless.
2. Add copy and paste in the next update, rendering all of this guy's work useless.
I'm gonna bet on the former.

I use copy and paste multiple times a day on my current smartphone. I know Apple doesn't deem the iPhone a smartphone, but c'mon... copying a link to a note entry or email. This new app looks cool. How soon before Apple snaps them up unless they are looking at bringing copy and paste to the iPhone sooner than later.

but this kind of shared framework doesn't just need to apply to copy and paste...so if apple nips this in the bud by adding it themselves (COME ON ALREADY! WE'VE BEEN SCREAMING FOR IT FOR OVER A DAMN YEAR) it could still be a way for apps to talk to each other in many ways, virtually without limits and all without background processing

I need more than specifically scripted copy/paste functions per application. I need the ability to copy from one point in text to another point in text and paste it in any application with a text box. I would be more than happy with that creepy video's approach.
What the hell, Apple? When you finally get around to satisfying millions of users' cries for copy/paste, I will download the feature and respond with an appreciative f@#k you very much, for making us wait for something so obvious, so basic, so necessary, that it's embarrassing. Jerks.

Copy/paste - it's a no-brainer. My old RAZR had copy/paste.
By the way, "Copy the tweet" never sounded quite so naughty.

Apple lets some small developers show them up. Funny.
Anyone writing a fixed firmware for the Safari crashes?
