iPhone Apps We Love: NetShare - Share Your 3G/EDGE Connection With Your Computer
Posted by Jason Chen at 10:53 AM on August 1, 2008
NetShare is one app we never thought would make it onto the official iPhone App Store. All it does is set up a SOCKS5 proxy for you to get your laptop/computer online through use of the 3G/EDGE connection. Does it work? Yes. Yes it does. EDGE works just fine, although Mahoney says it's slow as balls. 3G impressions in a sec. Be careful of how much bandwidth you're using, since your provider probably makes a frowny face at you using their network to power your laptop, however "unlimited" your plan may be. [NetShare - Thanks Matthew and Ryan!]

If you have a jailbroken iPhone you can tether it for free.
@nosebleed: IF you are within the "unlimited" 5GB limit and you aren't using it for P2P I see no reason why they would shut you out. Plus, every company that I've heard of "threatening" to drop users has always sent them plenty of warnings first as it's in their best interest to do so.
@tineras: The app is on Apple's App Store, not AT&T's. While you 'may' have a court case against Apple for supplying an program that you can't use on AT&T they do make you sign an agreement for the service and the app can be used on other carriers around the world that do allow tethering.

Considering Verizon wants $30 a month for me to tether my Blackberry to my laptop, I'd be surprised if this app stays around long. I don't know if AT&T charges a fee for tethering (I thought they did from when I was looking at data plans), but if they do they'd be losing a lot of revenue from a $9.99 application. Fingers crossed that this program stays around for you iPhone users. I wish my phone did that!

@dogcow: They can tel if you are capping the data connection speed and if it's constant and not burst. They can sample packets (even SSLed packets can apparently be determined) to see originating IP address and ports to determine if you are using it for P2P. This week AT&T told the FCC that they will disco. P2P users/abusers (is there a difference to them?) on their cell network.

Anyone else having problems on an iPhone 3G? Followed the instructions, but there's no proxy IP. It's connected to my ad-hoc Wi-Fi network (according to the settings app) but has the 3G symbol; the same happened when I used EDGE tethering back in the old 1.1.2 days, so it's not unexpected behavior. But no proxy IP, and the proxy doesn't work. Also can't ping the phone's IP from the computer.

I'm sure that whomever designed this application knew enough about networking that they'd use NAT or PAT. That way, when the phone sends out the frames/packets, it changes the IP and MAC to it's own as the source so that if someone inspects the packets it appears to have come from the iPhone, not another device. It's a pretty simple thing to do.

Keep in mind, I really don't have much expertise in such things, but it seems like there would be some giveaway, unless they really tried to hide it, that you're tethering your phone. Ugh, AT&T, we can use up the 5gb either way no problem. Who cares how we're using it!

What carrier are you with? Maybe you need to rewrite your sentence. Because it's quite OBVIOUS the the iphone is CAPABLE of anchoring a tethered connection. It's the fact that there's no PROGRAM for it (in the official App Store that is. this one doesn't count since we in the U.S. can't use it) that's the problem. Seeing that AT&T has it in its best interest to keep us from tethering laptops/home computers to our phones, maybe they are the ones keeping Apple from releasing this to us in the U.S.
Anyway, my poitn is that you probably aren't with AT&T and that reading is for smart people.
